Snuffed Out

The damned Lakers have a way of clouding reality, don't they? As the Kings stuck with them through two quarters, I goaded myself into believing the Kings could win. The team's best three players were out. Spencer Hawes was frustrated and awful. Mikki Moore wasn't doing much. Francisco Garcia was a bit off. The team looked tired (understandable, given the fight against San Antonio the night prior). The Lakers had a full assault, and they were at home, and they were on rest.

Against most teams, I would have conceded as soon as the margin hit 10. Good fight, fine season, good night. I hung in until the margin was about 18, though. At that point, it became "watch Quincy run."

Seriously, how perfectly morbid is it that the big take-away from the season's 82nd game was a monster night from Quincy Douby, in which he carved up the opposing defense so effortlessly you almost imagined it was summer league? QD shows us something between little and nothing all year ... and then on April 15, he drops 32. I'd be mad were it not for the closing play -- penetration leading to an and-1 ... with 3.3 seconds on the game clock, down 26. Showing disrespect to the Lakers will always get you points in my book.

So there we are, that's it. "Next Game: No game scheduled," says Yahoo!. I've been ready for the end since March, but it still stings a little. As many noted in response to the most recent poll, a 38-44 season is not typically a success. More than half the mornings-after this season have resulted in something between mild annoyance and downright depression. It's all part of the fan's manifesto, and we all deal with it in our own ways. But it's not the downers which are important -- it's the moments of glee and heartfelt excitement and fluttering pride in something we truly have more than a customer-business relationship in.

The offseason means no more Kevin Martin box scores. No more Spencer Hawes dunks. No more Francisco Garcia mean faces. No more Mikki Moore screeches. No more Ron Artest flyin' fist pumps of doom. No more Beno Udrih lefty kisses off the glass. No more Brad Miller face-flattening screens in the open court. No more cheesy shots bespectacled randoms during Newman Lasik promos. No more Fat Lever or Henry Turner (or, yes, Katye Christensen). No more Jerryisms. No more... no more... no more Peaches. <sniffle>

I miss Kings basketball already. But hey! Only roughly 172 days until the first preseason game!

(As it were, if you just joined StR this season, fear not: We'll be around all summer. In fact, June has historically been our most active month. In the next few weeks, we'll eulogize this season and started looking at what the team can/will do this summer. We'll get our draft prognostication on. We'll discuss the playoffs. We'll post more pictures of Peaches turning up in foreign countries. We'll prepare for free agency, summer league, the Olympics, preseason, and of course the 2008-09 season. Hope you join us, and we thank you for being a part of the 2007-08 season with us.)

Very well written. I feel your pain…

Pain?

I couldn’t be more pleased with this season. I mean sure we could have made the playoffs or whatever. But I don’t think I’m in the minority when I say the playoffs were never a possibility in my mind at the beginning of the season, and that never changed throughout the season. They exceeded my expectations for the season which were “be entertaining”. And I’ll be damned if they didn’t do that. They won 3 of the 4 games I attended this season, including that awesome first Memphis game with Cisco’s game winner. I’ll probably post more about this in the dia..fanpost, but this season was one thing I haven’t been able to say about a Kings season in a long time, it was fun. It’s fun to be a Kings fan again. So while the season is gone, I’ll take solace in the ridiculous Western Conference playoffs and in the knowledge that the Kings are fun again. And just thinking that makes me smile.

Pain as not being able to watch the kings as the season is over…

by inZane240 on Apr 16, 2008 9:12 AM PDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

I couldn’t agree more. I knew the Kings weren’t making the playoffs this year, so them not making it wasn’t that big of a let down (Sure, it would have been nice, but…). Last year was such a disappointment on so many levels that I wasn’t asking much this year. I just wanted them to shown signs of progress and to be entertaining. And hey, that’s exactly what I got.

As a franchise, yes the year was a disappointment, as it will be for 29 other teams this year, but like I said, the Kings showed signs of progress and were extremely entertaining, which is ultimately what the NBA is aiming for, entertainment.

It's Over!

Yo TZ, you drug me out of the lurker’s closet with the ‘Beat LA’ chant, so I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for work well done.
You’ve put together a good thing here, somehow merging rabid fandom and good citizenship into a very enjoyable and progressive experience (and the new format is awesome!).
I won’t post much, but I’m here every day.
Thanks,
BT

This season

was anything but a disappointment. Getting Beno for free, watching speed racer keep climbing, beating teams above us in the standings, a super solid(considering the team) home record and Shawes was neither a stiff nor humorless. I’m actually hopeful, which is a hell of a turnaround from draft day. PS: New layout is phenomenal. Holy web 2.0, batman!

tough night

The guys just looked tired last night – not saying they didn’t try but clearly the legs were not there. Nice game by Douby. The dude can “catch ‘n’ shoot.” Unfortunately, he can’t do too much more. But, hey, 30+ in the NBA ain’t no laughin’ matter. Good for Quincy.

Frankly, I was happy to see Spencer get his ass handed to him just a bit. He has a great ride this season, and, as I have made very clear in my posts, I am a big fan, who believe Spencer will be a 20/10 guy. However, he is going to be stewing on this game all off-season, and I, for one, am happy about it. It gives him something to think about while he improves his game and, more importantly, puts some muscle on those long bones of his.

I want Laker hatred ingrained in this young man’s mind!

More on Hawes

First, he sucked last night.

Second, he still managed nine boards and three blocks in his 27 sucky minutes. I find it encouraging that he could salvage anything positive out of the evening, and that he was still working hard until his evening ended.

First post!

I didn’t even had an account in here, but I decided to make one today just to say this:
I’ve been a die hard Kings fan for over 12 years now. I’m from Brazil, so unfortunately, I don’t have a chance to be there at Arco but I always find a way to watch every game.
This team just amazed me this season. I didn’t expect much especially with all the injuries and with Reggie makings his first season as a coach. I’m glad I stayed up until 4AM some nights to watch the games. It sure was rewarding.
There aren’t many Kings fans over here in Brazil, most of the NBA watchers are Lakers fans because Kobe is the most known player here after Jordan retired. But I’m always proud to say that I’m a Kings fan, and this season these players just made me even prouder.
And congratulatins, this blog is amazing, it’s been so entertaining and fun for me throught the season. Keep up the great job guys. And hopefully I’ll post here more often, always giving an overseas Kings fan perspective.
And sorry for my bad English…

Hi Brazilian

You’re english is a hell of a lot better than mine on most days! :)

by kingsTV on Apr 16, 2008 3:44 PM PDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Just curious

but how did you become a Kings fan if, like you said, everyone else follows the best player in the league. I am proud to have you as a global ambassador of the Sacramento Kings and Sactown Royalty. and your english isn’t bad at all.

when will the Kenny Thomas Reign of Terror end?!!??

by diehardkingsfan5 on Apr 16, 2008 5:05 PM PDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

J-Will is the answer to that question.
I always liked the Kings, even before J-will, but I only became a real fan after he joined the squad.
The first time I saw J-will on Kings, it was like love at first sight. I’ve been a Kings fan since then, and my love for the team just grows harder as the years go by.
Next season I’m planning on starting my own Brazilian Kings blog, I hope it goes well.
I’m glad my English is not as bad as I imagined…

Your English is better than our Portugese--I wouldn't spend time worrying about it

Well..

i wish the season weren’t over, but i couldn’t be more proud of the guys this year. They played their asses off. Hopefully we will get some defensive help for the kids this offseason and see if Kmart can get that scoring average up even higher!

Did anyone else

get goosebumps while watching the season in review last night at halftime. it almost made me cry because of the great season we had, all things considered. i sure am going to miss this team for the next few months, but at least i have my niners to somewhat ease that pain.

when will the Kenny Thomas Reign of Terror end?!!??

by diehardkingsfan5 on Apr 16, 2008 5:06 PM PDT reply reply   0 recs

I only saw the review today on youtube, ‘cause last night I had to watch the game with the Lakers commentary.
I can’t deny that I cried watching and I feel so sad today ‘cause the season is over.
I spent like the whole afternoon today watching highlights and interviews from this season.
At least I got some games I downloaded so everytime I miss the Kings I’ll just put one of those on…

by Line_Brazil on Apr 16, 2008 5:25 PM PDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

the shawes photos

sporting the peaches shirt changed the whole season for me. The fact that he started playing with some sort of basketball skill didn’t hurt either. If he can hit the weight room and we can coax either Vlade or C-Webb to come back and work on his post game he will be alright. I mean, come on, C-Webb has a burgers to flip at his restaruant and Vlade has singapore slings to pour at his shady nightclub (is it still there?).
Kevin Martin needs the ball and Anthony Johnson needs to come play in China.

overseas sac fans!!

hey there Brazillian and all, it’s just as difficult catching kings games over here in Australia. Raptorsnation was heaven for me…but now that’s gone too. They did show yesterday’s game though…. with LA commentary. damn they weren’t shy with their laker support!

can you believe my reason for supporting the kings is Bobby Hurley!!!! i even have his kings jersey haha. if he hadn’t have nearly died back then, he’d be backing up Beno in the playoffs now haha

loving the new page layout and looking forward to talking drafts etc with you all soon
