Reggie
is kissing some serious Kevin butt right now. His explanation is that Ron is the only guy that draws a double team – and that’s all he meant. He added that Kevin will eventually become a guy that demands double teams, too.

You're splitting hairs
Help defense is a form of double team. In the context that Reggie was talking: Crunch time, someone you can trow the ball to who then initiates the offense and draws additional defenders and can then either dish to the open man, finish or draw a foul. I think my statement stands.

By your definition of a “double team”....Every player in the league gets double teamed…
your statement had nothing to do with anything. ...thats obvious hoops man, when you get around a defender, help defense comes!!!
Help defence and “double teams” are two COMPLETELY different things man- I dont meant to school you on “hoops”, but thats the truth

Don't know that you're in any position to be schooling anyone
Help defense is when a player rotates to cover or help another player that has typically gotten past his defender.
Per NBA.com “If an offensive player drives past his defender on his way to the basket, another defender may come over from the weakside to play defense. This is called weakside help or help defense.”
A double team is when a second player leaves his man to help guard the player with the ball. K-Mart draws double teams. And besides, that’s not what Reggie said the first time. he said that Artest was the only go-to guy. The only guy he could give the ball to in a clutch situation. If you can’t see that was a slap in the face to K-Mart then you’re not trying very hard. School’s out.

And thanks for the worn out definition of help defense, which is exactly what I was trying to describe to Korea a few posts back..
I understand that your a big Kevin fan, as am I!
As i said earlier, theus should NOT have made those statements public. And yea, I could see how Kevin could see that as a “slap in the face”
And yeah, he said Artest was the only guy the Kings can go to in crunch time (meaning that he was the only guy who can draw a double and create). Whether or not you agree with that statement, thats all on you. But enough crying and bitching about it from STR already…cmon now, the Man watches these guys day in and day out in practice…he KNOWS what he is dealing with!!!

Wow, when you're proven wrong you immediately start calling names
What I did was simply correct you on the difference between a double team and help defense. Two on one, double team. One man backing up another, help defense. Sorry that was so confusing for you. I think TZ made it perfectly clear that K-Mart actually is a better clutch player than Artest. Glad you liked the line though. You can put it on your signature if you want.

Dude either switch to decaf or get off the roids or whatever your issue is. Do you notice that while you’re complaining about everyone else overreacting, YOU are the one swearing at people and all this other BS? This is a friendly board for the most part. You are the one flaming everyone. You really need to get a life or a girlfriend or some tranks. Calm yourself down before you blow a valve, dude. You started this whole conversation by belittling Korea who is a great poster and a knowledgable nba fan. You told Korea that K-Mart doesn’t draw a double team. Then you get crazier and crazier, when people disagree with you. Chill out my friend. And in case you are hyperventilating again, this is not sarcasm.

Hoops is clearly agitated, his bad. But reposting his exact point and then telling him hes not in a position to school anybody is inflamatory to say the least. Ending with “school’s out” are definitely fighting words. From a third party perspective, you are the one who is in fact confused as to who said what.

Again, maybe we are just not understanding each other
As I read Hoops post he was telling Korea that K-mart does not get double teamed. Meaning that two players are not covering him at the same time. My point was that when K-Mart drives, two players collapse on him, which I think we would all agree is a double team. Help would be if one player covers for another. The only reason I even added the school is out line was in regards to his saying in the post above that he was schooling Korea on the NBA. Nor worries though. I honestly think if people all calmed down a little and discussed things there would be less flaming. As soon as I see a post turning into flames back and forth it loses my interest.
Again, not a worry. And probably not even a disagreement. More of a miscommunication. I don’t have anything against hoops or anyone else.

Your missing his point
A double team, can be the same and different when two players guard one player. The situation you describe has two players guarding one player but is DIFFERENT than a double team. Ya, I see the logical connection TWO players guarding one, and poof! a DOUBLE team. Not the same thing though as I understood Hoops. A double team IS the same when TWO players guards one player, on a designed, designated defensive strategy. Like hoops says, this usually happens before a player gets past his designated defender. If KMart gets past his defender and runs past his defender and gets trapped by two defenders in the paint afterwards, that is not a DOUBLE team, it is a defensive switch.

Wrong
Double team – 2 defensive players guarding the man with the ball
Help defense – leave your player to help guard the man with the ball, resulting in 2 defensive players guarding the man with the ball.
The only difference is that help defense comes after the offensive player makes his move. Thus splitting hairs.
and that thought about your statement standing…..Not so much!
You didn’t refute my original statement at all. Just saying “not so much” doesn’t counter the argument.

Ok
But Reggie was talking about drawing defenders and creating opportunities in crunch time. And he specifically mentioned Kobe, who doesn’t post up that much, but draws defenders by slashing. So I think it was a slight to Kmart, and not really valid. That’s all I was saying.
And on top of that drawing doubles in the post like Artest does is useless if you don’t pass out of it, draw a foul or convert. Which Kmart does at a higher rate than Artest, which was the point of TZ’s earlier article.

Very
true about it hot helping if you dont pass out of the double…I believe Artest is more capable of this than many give him credit for, but only time will tell
The difference between Kobe and Martin (relating to dbl teams)
Martin = gets double teamed (by your definition) when he gets by his man
Kobe = Is often dble teamed in crunch time before he even gets by his man… And when played “straight up”, his defenders teammates naturally “sag” off their men in order to prepare to help out on Kobe’s defender… Kevin doesnt get that recognition by other teams defenses YET

Kobe often gets doubled on the perimeter early in the play. And this may be why in Theus’ mind Kevin is not as good as Ron. Seems like a very minor thing to me, but then I’m not an NBA coach or player.
Regarding Ron being capable of passing out of the double team: I think he is more than capable of doing this and doing it well, unfortunately I don’t think he is very willing to hit the open man. If I were Reggie, I’d assign about 50 hours of Tim Duncan game tape to Ron, and let him know that’s what I’m looking for from him on the offensive end.

Willing? Yet to be proven on a dependable basis. This is why so many posters refer to Good Ron vs. Bad Ron.
Good Ron gives this team so much it’s unbelievable. Bad Ron gives this team, and its fans, conniption fits.
Ron will be 29 this year and he’s been in the league for nine years. How much more time does he need to prove he can be willing (he’s definitely capable) to show better court awareness and team play?

Thanks
but I’m not just referring to Ron’s play this year. This is, in essence, the story of his entire career. He’s a phenomenally talented player, I don’t think anyone here disputes that. I really don’t.
There seems to be one “tick” off that causes basketball phenoms, there’s just something different about them that causes their greatness. One “tick” that makes them greater than the rest of us at what we do and makes them better than the rest of the NBA. The same holds true for anyone who achieves greatness (not just goodness) at anything they set their minds to.
I think Ron has that “tick”, I really believe that. I also believe that he has a second “tick” that holds him back. I really believe that too.
I hope the dude figures it out, I really do…but as I said in my original post, he’s going to be 29 years old this year and he’s been performing in his current job for nine years now…can he figure out how to get to the next level and break through to greatness?

Great
Great Points …..and I dont mean to respoind with such a “short answer” but…
But you make it somewhat sound like he is a guy with “potential” or a “high ceiling” as Jay Bilas says, who just can put it all together
The guy averaged 21ppg 4ast and 6rebs per game last year?
I agree that he has the potential to turn it up another notch or “tick” (given he has talent around him)...but those numbers aernt half bad?
I’m probobly one of the few people on STR who see having him around for another year as a positive thing for the squad

You're making my points for me...
he’s a very very good player who hasn’t broken out into greatness yet. He wants to be Kobe, but he’s not. He wants to be Chris Paul, but he’s not. He wants to be (name any great player here), but he’s not.
I believe it’s that second “tick” that keeps him from doing it, hence all the arguments about Good Ron vs. Bad Ron.
I think he has the ability, but I don’t know if he has the tools to become that player.
I think he’s an extremely gifted athlete who has been hampered (severely) by his upbringing. He’s admitted as much.
I want the guy to succeed, I don’t necessarily want him to play on my favorite team.

It’s not ridiculous. Based on what you said, it is the correct interpretation. Throw the ball to, doesn’t mean only in the post and Reggie said it could be on the perimeter too. That’s why he mentioned Kobe. Kobe draws a double on the perimeter, and maybe Kevin doesn’t draw one on the perimeter all the time yet, but I’ve gotta think he would if we went to him in crunch time more often.

Listening to Reggie's comments
- Reggie didn’t see the article? What? (It’s called the Internet Reggie)
- He missed Kevin a couple times? Kevin left Reggie a message?
- Reggie claims that Sam Amick distorted Reggie’s message in his article
- He was proud of Kevin’s development? So what. This is the pro’s, and not college. (Reggie is talking out of his ass)
- Ron’s the only guy who draws a double team? Hmmm, perhaps for the most part this is true.
- If Reggie was talking about the block then just say that (Not buying that argument that drawing a double team only refers to post play)
Interesting insight: I’m proud that a bunch of guys on the roster had career years because of me. Huh? Interesting, but I’m not sure that’s quite true. Who had career years? (Brad did not have a career year. He resuscitated it. There is a difference. And I’m not sure Beno had a career year either. Especially if Beno gets consistent playing time for the rest of his career.)
- Truthfully I’m reading Amick’s article again-Sam didn’t dwell on that point about throwing the ball into the block-TZ did, I did, several of us around here did, but Sam didn’t really either. He talked about Theus saying the team needed more rebounding and toughness, and that the team needs to figure out it’s direction beginning with Artest—in otherwords this was all bullshit as usual.

Famously said about Oakland “There is no there there” (or here.) I’m not saying what was said wasn’t mildly intriguing and/or problematic. But I wouldn’t go much past mildly. Wait you mean coaches talk out of both sides of their mouth and players are overly sensitive? Really?
I just have a lot of trouble mustering any indignation toward this situation on either side. And I’m as reactionary as they come. So that’s indicative of something.
