KJ's Political Career Ending Quickly
The Sacramento Bee drops a double whammy on Sacramento basketball legend Kevin Johnson: a story this morning on sexual abuse allegations from when he was Sacramento High's principal, and a breaking story on a federal investigation of his St. HOPE's finances (as well as those sexual abuse allegations).
KJ's mayoral campaign is officially toast. Four more years of Heather Fargo means four more years of city disinvolvement in any arena proceedings (which, admittedly, is not near the most important things for Sacramento).

Wow
It really amazes me that people run for office who have such politically flammable skeletons in their closet. This is the second story I’ve seen regarding KJ being sexually inapropriate, and the stuff with his properties in Oak Park is now compounded by a federal investigation of the St. Hope academy.
He is now tagged as a pervert and a scam artist. Good luck selling that one to the voting public.

Willie
made sure they were legal, even if only barely. But yeah, in this era of camera phones and the Internet….he’d have had to tone things down some.

Man...
KJ is unbelievably naive to think this stuff wouldn’t come out. I agree. He’s done.

My question is simple
Why the hell did he run for Mayor now?

I don't know.
Even when the Bee first reported that he was thinking about entering the race, a couple of commenters mentioned both the Phoenix incident and the Sac High incident. I was shocked as I’d never heard either of these mentioned before yet they were public enough that Bee commenters knew of these allegations. So, I did a little googling and came up with the original series of articles from a Phoenix area newspaper and read parts of the phone conversation back then. It gave me a great deal of pause on the KJ for mayor movement. I recently read the full affidavit on the Bee’s website and it gave me a lot more pause.
I couldn’t decide whether I believed the allegations or not, but the one thing I came away from those articles with was the certainty that the Phoenix police wanted that case charged. I may not be remembering the details very well, but I believe they took it to both the city and county prosecutors offices and were turned down by both for lack of physical evidence and a likelihood of conviction. The other thing that struck me with both allegations is that none of the alleged victims went to a lawyer or law enforcement first, all of the allegations came out of these minors confiding in a trusted adult who had the legal requirement to report suspected child abuse. In Phoenix it was a counselor hired to treat the girl’s eating disorder, in Sacramento, it was a teacher and school counselor during a retreat. Gold diggers hire lawyers or go to the media…confused adolescents confide in a trusted adult, if they confide in anyone at all.
I may be more sensitive to this as a female so I should probably stay away from commenting on this subject again.
Just my subjective viewpoint.

What a shame.
This is backwater politics at its best. The Bee has certainly done its best public service work to keep both Heather Fargo in office and the Kings out of a new arena. This article needs a major Pookey dissection, it lacks balance and shamelessly self promotes itself. The section about the 17 year old recanting to Kevin Johnson’s buddy smells of journalistic rhetoric lacking substantiation. Has the girl continued to recant? Has she been interviewed by the authorities? Are there charges pending? Fargo intended to run unopposed and it looks like the Sacramento Bee is going to insure that happens.

I'm not dissecting it for several reasons
I don’t think KJ is a public figure worth saving. When there’s smoke there’s fire. KJ tried to save Sac High, and as a graduate of the place, it wasn’t worth saving. The only thing semi important was the school’s long history, and give the mass crapitude of the Sac City Unified School District, that wasn’t going to happen. I don’t care what the Bee did, but it’s pretty easy to skewer KJ in some realistic fashion. Whether that article was appropriate, or not, is beyond my scope, and I wouldn’t even bother to delve into whether the charges are worthy or not.

I agree
One time, you might be able to convince me. Repeat behavior, you have to start wondering if the guy has a problem, and whether these are just the incidents we know about.
