Selfish Consideration

There are perhaps four NBA coaches today whom, if they were to suddenly become available, you would have to consider, regardless of whether you have a coach or not.

1. Jerry Sloan

2. Gregg Popovich

3. Phil Jackson

4. Mike D'Antoni

D'Antoni is available , apparently. Dare to dream, or snub the nose?

No and...

No and Phil Jackson still can’t coach a team without one of the best 5 players in the NBA on it.

We don't really know that...

...in that he was too gutless to take (or keep) a job like that.

No deal

I like D’Antoni. I think he’s a great offensive mind. I just think that letting a rookie coach go after one season in which most people agree he overachieved, is a bad precedent. Plus let’s be honest. We hardly have a contender right now, which is probably what D’Antoni is looking for.

Tougher question than I initially thought

Reggie’s antics over the season make me wonder if he’s one of those guys that can only be with a franchise for a few years before an inevitable explosion.

And I like D’Antoni. But I agree with you on the precedent this kind of thing would set. Reggie has earned the right to coach this squad next year.

But why is it ?

That If the kings made the playoffs this season they have a better chance of beating the Lakers rather than Nuggets. I still feel we have a better chance to beat the Spurs but will lose if we played the Suns. I guess its all about match-ups. I think we would be a dangerous team in the playoffs or im just crazy… need sleep ZzzzZZZzzz

Why

would we want another coach who does nothing but fail in the post season. I’d rather try my luck with what we’ve got.

Addition

you can now add Avery Johnson to the above list as he was fired this afternoon by the Mavs…

He should have been fired after the 2006 finals

If I'm Geoff Petrie

I drop a comment in an interview that we need a coach that we can “get the clipboard to.” Then I recant on the radio a couple of days later and blame the whole thing on Sam Amick.

I don't like D'Antoni for alot of reasons

The Shaq trade aside, and I think the biggest problem with the Suns is Robert Sarver, I think D’Antoni is being set up as the fall guy by the Suns organization.

I think D’Antoni, though, is also flawed as a head coach. He is not Rick Adelman for instance, where he can win with multiple style’s of teams. Rick prefer’s certain types of teams, but the truly special coaches make all their team’s better with the way they coach and prepare their teams. D”Antoni’s style just so happened to coincide with a career revival from a chronically hurt Canadian, and a league insistence that the play be more up and down at a faster pace. Frankly I think D’Antoni’s in game adjustment’s suck, and he’s not a coach that you fear going up against. That’s why Kerr and Sarver will let him walk so convincingly. Maybe I’m wrong, and maybe I’m not, but while D’Antoni isn’t the greatest thing since sliced bread, it is equally true that Robert Sarver is one of the true blue idiot owners of the NBA.

That Adelman point...

Is a good one. I think every coach in the NBA is one dimensional to a fault. Avery Johnson was uninventive on offense. D’Antoni couldn’t bring himself to care about defense. There are only a handful of coaches who are very good at understanding the delicate balance between the two. Those same coaches are also very lucky in regards to the talent they’re surrounded by. No Adelman couldn’t get us, or Portland, over the playoff hump, but if these flameouts by Dallas and Phoenix teach us anything as Kings fans it’s that we were probably a much better team, and Adelam a much better coach, than even us as a fanbase fully realized. I’m not sure D’Antoni or Saunders or Avery or Van Gundy (maybe Van Gundy) could walk through that door and mold us into any sort of contender any better than Theus could. That’s not so much giving too much credit to a second year coach as it is questioning just how good guys like D’Antoni are independent of their situation. Which makes it a two sided coin. If Phoenix does can D’Antoni they better start looking for their second head coach after hiring their first one, because it’s inevitable that first guy is going into a Musselman situation.

I was just simply pointing out that Adelman's true value is

that he can win with multiple styles. D’Antoni, and Johnson in particular, can’t. I’m not convinced SVG isn’t a better coach than either at this point. That’s a personal opinion though. (I know I would much rather have SVG, even including the Embassy Suites affair last year noted.)

I was actually

referring to Jeff. Who isn’t a very good offensive coach but is so solid defensively it negates a lot of the offensive sterility. I still think Stan is a hack for what he pulled last year…though I guess ultimately we should all be pissed at Billy Donovan, if, in fact, any of us are still pissed.

The only possibility I see is that SVG demanding to not deal with Artest

Other than I can’t see much of a difference being made truth be told.

I say no

We won’t be contenders soon enough to satisfy either D’Antoni or Avery, and in the interim, I don’t know that it’s worth it to replace Theus with either of those two. Theus is fine in the developmental role, he earned the spot, and more than anything we need some stability and continuity and structure for our core to grow within.

I say no

Not because I am sure Reggie is the right coach, but because I don’t want the Maloofs to turn into Al Davis.

by SavageBeast on Apr 30, 2008 3:07 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

yes

definately put in an offer. I am not particularly sold on Reggie Rules yet, while I think bringing in the big D would make the team exciting. Plus, just the experience alone puts him way above Reggie. I guess it would piss off Reggie but so what, he spends a lot of time pissing everyone else off.

by Travis Mays Hayes on May 1, 2008 12:01 AM PDT reply actions   1 recs

Let's Hire Him

I like Reggie, but I think D’Antoni is a much better coach. I don’t think he wanted to do the Shaq deal, and it ended up killing the team. Phoenix is soon to be toast anyway as Nash really seems to be slipping. Maybe he’s hurt, but his play in that Spurs series was uninspiring at best.

My only reservation is that the Kings really don’t have the personnel to play the kind of game D’Antoni wants to play, although his style could probably make Kevin Martin a 35-point per game scorer.
