Numerous sources have said that the Heat, Timberwolves, Sonics, Knicks, Clippers, Bucks, Bobcats, Nets and Blazers are all open to trading their picks if the right deal came along.

Hmmm
Dear Satan Pat Riley,
Ron Artest, Quincy Douby, our 1st round and a 2nd round pick this year, and our 1st round pick next year (top ten protected for one year) for your first round pick this year and Mark Blount.
(Hey, a guy can dream, can’t he?)

Remember -
You’re swapping picks for this year, so net-net you’re only committing one more 1st round pick. As jjham pointed out, you can’t trade back to back 1st rounders, so it would be a 1st round pick for 2010, the same year that you would be making a big free agent move, so the pick may not be as important. And you can “protect” the pick (top 5, top 10, whatever).

Yeah
But Artest = a lottery pick. So you’re saying 3 lottery picks for 1. I’m saying that’s too much. 2 for 1 yes. 3 for 1 no. We could give the Heat the option to swap #1s in 2010(top 5 protected) or 2011. I’d be ok with that.
Maybe they wouldn’t do it, and maybe it would be worth your proposal for a #2. Maybe I just talked myself into it. If Petrie made this trade, i guess I’d be ok with it. We do really need a top 3 type of player. If we keep getting 10-15 type players we’ll never compete again.
You win. Make the trade.
