Cal Expo Board Approves Arena Idea
The board which governs Cal Expo listened to David Stern this afternoon, and rewarded him by approving an item which allows the NBA and Cal Expo's reps to negotiate the details of a possible plan to build an arena at the site, reports The Bee.
The NBA and Cal Expo's folks (former Gov. Pete Wilson, among others) have six months to put together a specific plan to rebuild Cal Expo and give the Kings a new home. No taxes requested still. The complainers, of course, have already found something new to complain about: traffic. A way to remedy traffic could be included in the plan to be formulated.
Now? We wait some more. Great second step, though. Kudos to all involved.

If the traffic problem gets solved
it will probably be at the expense of the Peruvian Egret, which will bring out a new group of whiners (or at least give the same old group of whiners something new to piss and moan about).

the traffic problem
could really be great for the city. to have a need for a real form of public transportation would be great for sacramento. I know i would love to take a train/bus/whatever to games and save myself the hassle of paying for parking and the hell that it would be to leave the arena after the game.
it should also bring even more growth to east sacramento. They should probably start now though in terms of fixing the infrastructure.

lOL @ fixing East Sac
With those Real Estate prices nobody is clamoring to fix anything out that way.

agreed. creating some public transit that would be centered around a location like a new arena would also make more people familiar/comfortable with taking light rail or bus or whatever around. has anyone ever been to portland? the rose garden is the hub for 3 bus lines that go all over the area. that would be a dream for carless folks such as myself who have to rely on other people to drive to arco.

Great point
I live in Stockton and commute to Rancho Cordova, and some public transportation would be great. Sac could really get it going with this and it could easily spread here in the valley. It would do a lot of wonders for the area. The arena would sell way more beer because people taking the train don’t have to worry about driving. It could also help with commuting as well. Even for people that live and work in Sac it’d be way cheaper to buy a month train pass (roughly $20-30) than to drive and spend money on gas.
This really gives Sacramento the chance to force some progress in this area. Not to mention what it’ll do to the local economy.

Cal Expo is state land right?
So, F@ck the City and the County. As long as the NBA, the State and the Kings agree, that should do it, right?

Unless there are zoning issues, disputes over the sale of the current arena and the city-owned land around (and under?) it, and transportation costs the state/developer can’t/won’t cover. There will still need to be some support from the locals, but not nearly as much as with previous plans.

Infrastructure
If the only thing that the City/County has to cover are Infrastructure Upgrades, then this is a great situation for a new Arena.
That’s something that the City/County should be looking into anyway.
