Mmmmm, Deep Fried Arena Dogs
Three gold stars and a smiley face for rbiegler and The Ghost Of Dick Bavetta, both of whom found this story about the arena at Cal Expo on line at the Bee shortly after it broke.
This is encouraging news, in spite of the potential infrastructure issues (ask the folks in Seattle if they would have taken an arrangement like this). I will try to remember that when I am sitting on the Capital City Freeway on a Friday morning afternoon evening.
And thanks to Sam Amick, here is the official press release via his blog (no word yet on Peaches and Reggie's reaction to Sam sharing this information).

Freeway access would obviously need to be upgraded.
But I’ve loved the “idea” and the location couldn’t be better, could it?
And infrastructure costs can’t be mitigated with a wave of the wand either – so stay tuned.

I love the idea
as well. After listening the gentlemen representing the “plan”, it sounded as if freeway upgrades/adjustments would be part of the proposal. Which should calm the fears of many Sacramento folks who ride these highways to work on a daily basis. (Although, I’m pretty sick of hearing them bitch and complain about the potential freeway issues to be honest…Face it..Sacramento is NOT a one stop town anymore fellas..It could be much worse!)
As far as the potential new arena, I’m reluctantly excited about the idea. I’m a purest of sorts who would love to one day take my kids to Arco 2 for a game, but the reality of the situation is that in order to survive in such a competitive market, you need state of the art facilities. Shit, you think we feel bad about leaving Arco 2, go ahead and ask the Celtic fans about leaving the Garden, or The Bulls fans about leaving old Chicago Stadium.
However, I’m beginning to see the anti-arena flags already being waved around town. If you check out the recent posts on the story which ran this morning on sacbee.com regarding the arena issue, you will find a large group of misguided/misinformed/shortsided Sacramentans expressing their views. I’m a patient man and I was able to laugh off their views this morning while eating a bowl of cheerios, but I have a feeling this issue regarding these depressed/pessamistic (see Dave Jones) Sacramentans is going to annoy the hell out of me in the near future.
However, CHEERS to the NBA and Cal Expo (Stern and Pete Wilson included) for getting the wheels rolling on this issue. I just can’t get this disgusting nightmear out of my head, where I’m envisioning Seattle fans and Sacramento Fans sitting together, wondering aloud “What the Hell did we do to deserve this??“

It is amazing
how quickly some people can form a negative opinion. The infrastructure is a great example. Even without any renovation at Cal Expo the Cap City Freeway is a mess through there. Could a renovation at Cal Expo be a catalyst for the road work that has needed to be done? Perhaps.
I also love the folks that think the arena should be in the railyard. I wonder how they voted on “Q” and “R.”
You’re right, 916. There will always be people that will pee on any new idea. These are the same people that will be mad if the NBA strikes a good deal for the Maloof’s, even if it doesn’t cost the taxpayer anything. Envy, it seems, is just as green as money.

It's a mess because proper public transportation
Is not a more attractive option there. (I’ve lived there recently. I know how it is. Improving, or widening the roads, is stupid.) Adding a variety of multi layered public transit options is a necessity. Why is that so hard for Californians to understand? You people need to learn there are other forms of transit besides cars.

new arena
i used to live in sacramento, so maybe my opinion does not count, but according to your governor, you are 20 billion dollars in debt, and Sacramento leads the nation in home foreclosures, do you really believe someone else is going to foot the bill and the biggest benefit would be a reduction in traffic?I’ve seen the news photos of the Maloof family with “lil Wayne”(busted for drug and firearm posession), barry bonds and an assortment of reportedly troubled persons (Britney Spears). Fair is fair, let the Maloofs and their wealthy friends pay the middle class hardworking taxpayers portion of this bill and to quote Joe and Gavin “we are what we are.”

Your opinion counts
My point is that (1) the Cal Expo arena venture does not involve taxpayer dollars and (2) improvements are needed to the Cap City corridor whether an arena is built at Cal Expo or not. The fact that the Maloof’s are worth millions or that they hang with lil Wayne or Barry Bonds is beside the point, as are the millions of dollars that they have given to various charities. As one of the “hard working middle class” I do not hold it against the Maloof’s that they are worth millions. If a new arena is built at Cal Expo I will attend, traffice be damned.

Agreed
The very fact that this plan appears to provide a decent location, no tax payer dollars, and doesn’t hang upon the owners spending significant money, is enough that it should wow every Kings fan. Heck every sports fan. It is a great model for other cities. If Sacramento and the NBA can pull this off, I guarantee you will see other small to medium size sports towns analyze this inside and out to see how they can do the same thing. And anyone who lives in a town where college football can draw sixty thousand plus fans will tell you that traffic after and before a game is something you can live with. You learn tricks and the police get very good at moving people in and out. Doesn’t mean the cooridor doesn’t need to be fixed, but traffic alone won’t kill this deal.

Arena
Perception is an issue, as if you want public money in some form and seeing your owners in rap videos thats going to rub people the wrong way.
Potentially if they can get this venture to fly, sell land off to private developers to pay for it and to make the area viable year round so more income is generated. Be it a shopping mall, or a restraunt row of sorts, a bit like Downtown San Jose. Anyway its an interesting development

I think the problem here is fairly simple
There is no infa-structure for anything Cal Expo, and can you imagine a late-pre Xmas-December game Cal Expo. Good luck walking, because driving would take you longer. Not only that, the demand for busing to the actual arena would increase because the site has enough to provide some parking, but it will be just such a hassle getting there. There’s nothing wrong with the Cal Expo location, but widening the road IS NOT the answer.
I make this comment for this reason. Like many here, I happen to be from Sacramento, or at least living in the area for a long time. I remember the days where driving on Hwy 160 5pm was nothing because relatively few people used it as much. Worse, there weren't many bottlenecks once you passed El Camino on Biz 80. Nowadays, by the time you hit Royal Oaks Dr, you're in a traffic jam because of all the merging traffic Cal Expo. I’m all for this stuff, but it’s gotta make sense in an infa-structure possibility. So you to decide to widen the roads? For what? Gas fueled cars as gas prices will rise to probably over 5 dollars a gallon by the time the Arena gets built? (I’m being nice with the 5 dollars a gallon btw.) MY point is that public transportation needs to be the part that gets upgraded, and the roads, which would be fine for transportating mostly busloads of people, would not have to be widened to accomodate 3 or 4 people in cars traffic.
For the record, anyone who believes monorail is an useful idea, should come up to Seattle and see how well that piece of crap works. I’ve railed against monorail before, and will again, and again, and again, until people get my point. Monorail looks nice, and is utterly useless to the general public here. Unless you have a dying need to get an elevated view of 5th ave between the Westlake Center and the Space Needle.
Last but not least, the Maloof’s if they get a public subsidy as large as the whole arena, can finally shut the fuck up about how much money THEY get for parking, and just allow public transportation to the damn game. Every other city has it for chrissake. Sacramento should too.
