2008 StR Community Draft Board: Pick #2

Derrick Rose would be Sactown Royalty's #1 pick, were the franchise so lucky as to find the pick in its hands. This next one seems like a foregone conclusion, but democracy matters dammit.

The next Chris Webber.

by Tom Ziller on Jun 10, 2008 7:23 AM PDT reply actions

Precisely.

I really think that you are right with that prediction. He has all of Webber’s skills and faults (lack of killer instinct and lax of behavior at times) imo. Who knows we may end up trading kevin martin for him in like 5 years… ok I am joking about that.

That just made me throw up, a little. Not because it’d be the worst thing to ever happen, but because it reminded me of being a Kings fan in 1993.

wow

I almost wrote the exact same comment, but decided against it.

Glad it wasn’t just me.

3rd Pick?

I Still think its a waste of time – I thought it was about the KINGS draft board. I don’t think there’s a deal to be had with Miami.
But Beasley.
If I WERE to speculate, I’d say the ‘Wolves pick at #3 might be available to the Kings with the right offer. If they want a Center (as they seem to) they can get a good prospect even at #12. BUT – I’d bet they might trade down to the 5-10 range and still get what we can offer. That finally DOES bring in who’d be the third pick if the Kings could pull it off.

I’d go with OJ.

5 (Memphis) is also looming. There seems to be a drop-off after #3 though and 4-10 look like a fairly equal group.

I don't think you understand the concept

This isn’t a Mock Draft, it’s a “Draft Board”.

Teams going into the draft assign a value to EVERY PLAYER in the draft, so that as players are selected they take them off the Draft Board. This is the Sactown Royalty Draft Board.

It’s just a collective ranking of all of the available players as voted by the people who visit/frequent StR.

Settle down, there’s plenty of posts on here about who the Kings will likely take (there’s a new one every time Chad Ford releases a new Mock Draft!), this is something different than that.

Read your intro for the first posting

Read it again, see what you said/proposed, then tell me how I misunderstood the concept. That being said, I did respond with my choice.

I read it again

Sounds weird to me to worry about picks we won’t have – but I guess you’re correct and understand the concept.

The question that always arises then is are we concentrating on Need – or Best Player? (by hype)

Need I think most would agree dictates a PF/ tall SF and a PG. I suggest ignoring the several Centers and SGs available soon unless a trade is contemplated.

Beasley

The best player in college basketball last year, and I think the most NBA ready of this draft class.

This isn't about picks we don't have

It’s the order we would take the players. That is to say, if somehow both Rose and Beasley were on the board at 12 (unlikely, sure, but if it happened), based on this exercise we would take Rose. If Beasley is second on our board, it means that no matter who else is still out there, we’d be taking Beasley. Is this likely? No, but that’s what a draft board is.

Our best offer

To Miami would perhaps have something to do with #2, Blount and Banks for Artest, Udrih (sign and trade) plus no. 12 pick. I think at this juncture, this is not a bad trade for either parties. The Kings need another young star to help further along the rebuild. No fan would not be excited about the trio of Martin, Beasley and Hawes. Blount comes off the books when Thomas, Abdur-Rahim and the other hydras would expire and we’d still have plenty of cap space to add a prominent free agent to our team.

Also, I never understood why people were disgusted by picking up Eddy Curry or Zach Randolph and the no. 6 pick for Artest and maybe Salmons. The Knicks get to shave off some salary so they could “try” to grab Lebron, Dwyane or Chris Bosh. We would get a young player to add to the mix we have now such as Randolph, Gallinari or Gordon.

BOOK IT!

My take

Regarding your 1st trade proposal, I don’t think that you can sign and trade Udrih since he is an unrestricted free agent. If you resign him he’s your for at least 60 days (I think).

As far as Randolph and Curry are concerened: Randolph is owed $48 million over the next three years, while Curry has averaged 5.4 rebounds per game for his career (and is owed $31 million over three years). Neither one of them has averaged even a half block per game for their career. I can’t speak for others, but that’s why I don’t want either one of them. I’d rather Artest walk for nothing than have either one of those guys given the combination of their contracts and their limited talents.

A sign & trade wouldn't even have to be considered with Beno

Plus, here’s the other part of that that’s important, which is that Beno can sign with Miami for the MLE just as easily as he can in Sacramento.

For the record, though, any sign & trade has to be completed in 48 hours or else the deal is null and void.

Plus the #6?

So you’re saying that you wouldn’t take either player even if the #6 was handcuffed to them? Is that any different than just taking a terrible contract back to get a high lottery pick?

I’m not necessarily saying I disagree (if we’re talking about K9 & SAR then I am, but since we’re talking about Artest…), I’m just curious to know if that pick changes your stance at all.

by smgmatt on Jun 11, 2008 7:23 AM PDT up reply actions

Correct

Jason Richardson was worth the #8 pick last year, but he has some game. My opinion of Randolph and Curry is that they would not help this team considerably more than Mikki Moore. Randolph can score and rebound, but his idea of a pass is moving the ball from his left hand to his right hand, and he plays no defense and can’t block shots. Curry can’t rebound, block shots or defend. They are both woefully overpriced. I suppose I would take one of them if Derrick Rose or Michael Beasley came with them, but not the #6 pick.

Great quote

Always on the cutting edge of comedy, Section, this has to be one of my favorites. I think I’ve heard this before, but it’s hilarious none-the-less.

...his idea of a pass is moving the ball from his left hand to his right hand…

Here’s a question for you though, would you be on board with a K9 & SAR for ZR & #6 deal? I’m not saying it’s likely, but if NYK was serious about getting LBJ in 2010, it might be possible. I’d take a chance on this one, and I think I’d even consider it if the #6 wasn’t included (I’ve broken down the $ before, and over the next 3 years it’s even, +$2M, +$17.3M with that final year being the extra year he has over K9 & SAR).

Under that same assumption, what about for Miller? A factor here is that Hawes would get more time in the lineup, which would (presumably) speed up his progress, and if Anthony Randolph was picked up at #6, he could split time with ZR to get his feet wet as well. Don’t know how I feel about this one, but I thought I’d throw it out there.

by smgmatt on Jun 12, 2008 6:30 AM PDT up reply actions

First

I picked up that quote somewhere – one of Peja’s teammates may have said it about him (jokingly) back around 2000-03.

Because I think so little of Randolph, I feel that what you would get from him would not justify the extra year’s contract. That is, ‘Reef and K9(woof!) are absoulute non-contributors at this point but they are not in anyone’s way. We’d be extended one more year with a bad contract, and eventually Randolph would become the “new” K9(woof!). The #6 makes it more tempting, but you would have to go into it with eyes wide open, as Randolph has underachieved and worn out his welcome in both Portland and New York. He’s got seven years of NBA experience under his belt, so even though he’s only going to be 27 come the start of the season, I doubt that you’re going to be able to change him. I’d have to really love the player available at #6 to pull the trigger on this one (Mayo/Bayless). All of that said, I doubt that the Knicks would give up their #6 pick (at this point) for garbage and just to unload Randolph and his contract.
