It's been a while...
...I know its been a while since I've posted. Pretty much since the season ended. While I still read the site every day, I wasn't going to post until after the Finals. I needed to detox. And then this story broke, so much for that idea.
(I have TONS of thoughts on so many posts, which I will respond to over the next bottle of wine...I mean few hours. First, I want to get to some of my thoughts).
After I got past the above initial reaction, I felt something that I did not expect; vindication. I always felt that we got cheated in that game. It wasn't just bad calls, it was something bigger. As my seemingly infinite rants have shown, I hate Laker fans. I often hate Laker fans more than the Lakers themselves. Moving to SoCal will do that to a person. Today was a little different though. The Game 6 argument is over. Several Laker fans actually approached me today with an apologetic tone. They always knew it too, but now they cant avoid it.
People down here had previously admitted that Game 6 consisted of possibly the worst officiating the NBA had ever seen. Now there is a reason. Greed. I dont think the NBA cared who eventually won the series, they just wanted the extra $ a game 7 would bring. No matter how either team played, the Kings were not going to win that game. The fix was in.
I actually thought this to myself hundreds of times, but wouldnt admit it could actually be true. Now I have zero doubt. None. Bill Simmons touched on the situation a little in his article today, and I think it deserves some attention:
I have decided to ignore Tim Donaghy's "accusations" about chicanery with NBA officiating for the same reason I argued we should have ignored Matt Walsh during SpyGate -- if someone's a complete scumbag, then anything he says should be taken with the caveat that a complete scumbag is saying it. Besides, we didn't need Donaghy to tell us something horribly unsettling happened with the officiating for Game 6 of the 2002 Kings-Lakers series. We all watched it and I have written about it at least 10 different times -- along with Game 7 of the Sonics-Suns series in '93, LJ's Four-Point Play in '99 and the Hubert Davis Game, it was one of the four fishiest NBA games since I graduated college. Actually, "fishiest" isn't a strong enough word. The credibility of the sport was briefly compromised.
I will differ with Bill, and many of you here (including the great section214) on one point. Donaghy is a perfect source for this. information Who better to talk about a fixed game, than a referee from the same sport that has admitted to gambling on, and fixing several games. He is the Jose Canseco of the subject. Dirtbag, hell yes. But also the person that I would listen to in this situation. The man really has nothing to gain from these allegations. The situation reminds me of McNamee. When the Clemens story broke, he held many details back, and actually lied to make Clemens seem less guilty. Then Clemens went after him, and McNamee let the truth come out. Why would Donaghy bring this up during his gambling allegations? Now that the NBA is going after him for $1 million, the gloves are off. I for one, am listening.
Another interesting note I dug up online today.
NBA referee Bob Delaney, one of three referees to work Game 6 of the 2002 Western Conference finals, told Bob Ley in an interview for ESPN's "Outside The Lines First Report" that he has never been contacted by NBA or federal investigators concerning allegations by former referee Tim Donaghy that two referees in that game intended to assure that series went seven games.
Wouldn't at least talking to the referees from Game 6 be an important part of investigating the situation? David Stern and the NBA want nothing more than for this story to go away. They dont want to get to the bottom of anything, they just want it to go away. Hell, can you imagine in they could prove that the game was fixed? What then? The past cannot be changed, so they just want to pretend it never happened.
This really is a situation that cannot be fixed. There are only losers here; the Kings were robbed of a championship, and Kings fans had their hearts ripped out. Hell, I would argue even the Lakers have been hurt by this. Sure, they got to 3-peat, but a dishonest win just doesnt feel as good. Plus, if this has happened once, I am sure it has happened other times. The Suns getting screwed last year also comes to mind. This really hurts every NBA fan, the honesty of the game is at stake.
All of that said, will I still watch the games? You better believe it. Sports are a part of my life, and the Kings (and yes, fellow Kings fans) are part of "sport family". Things may not be perfect, and bad things happen, but we stick together. Like I have told seemingly hundreds of people before, "I would rather be a Kings fan and lose, then a Laker fan and win."
Oh yah, the entire 4th quarter of the game can be seen on YouTube, it is broken down over several segments. Some of you sadists out there might want to give it a try. It's not easy.
Lastly, I've missed talking with all you guys (girls too). Hell, I even missed coolcat. Something is wrong with me.

Nice Diary
The NBA isn’t going to admit to anything here, they went out on a limb discussing the Fisher foul on Barry. Don’t bet on them going public on anything else.
And you know what? I don’t really care. My enjoyment of the league has diminished somewhat over the last five years, and a lot of that has to do with the officiating. I will still watch the Kings as much as possible, and probably catch a good portion of the playoffs on tv, but it’s going to be a long while before I give the NBA any of my hard-earned dollars by attending a game in person.
What can the league do at this point? Like I said, I don’t care if they go public. But what they can do is heal this fissure over time, and here’s the best way to start:
1) Move control of the officials away from the league. Pay an outside party to hire, train and discipline the officials.
2) Reinstitute or just freaking enforce the no-whining rule.
3) Enforce the upcoming no-flopping rule.
4) Call the game the same way, 48 minutes per game, 82 games per year. A foul in the first ten minutes of game 1 of the season should be a foul in the last two minutes of game 7 of the NBA finals.
5) Enforce the traveling rule.
6) Enforce the carry rule.
7) Fire Bennett Salvatore.
8) Don’t play favorites. Swallowing the whistle for a rookie in crunch time while an arm-hair foul on Kobe brings him two free throws is no bueno.
Do this shit on the downlow for all I care (well except for the Salvatore firing), and stay disciplined on enforcing the rules of the game as they are written. Over time, the product will be much improved.

Why would doneghy lie?
Everybody remember when they tried to discredit Jose Canseco? Now we can all thank him for blowing the lid off of the biggest sports scandal in history. Doneghy shouldnt be discredited just because of his record. He was closer to the games and scandal than even David Stern himself, unless of course Stern was in on the fix the entire time.
Lakers suck!

AGREED...Agreed..agreed
Making this story up would in know way help him get a lesser sentence. It doesn’t affect his case at all. You cant use “but they did it too” in court.
Wait....Why is everybody clapping? Everyone around me is clapping.... I guess I should be clapping too... GO LAKERS!!! I hate living in So Cal

otis -
Agreed, 1,000%.
As to why Donaghy would lie…why would Nixon “Watergate” and election that he was going to easily win? Why do oil companies rake in billion dollar profits and still raise their prices to an economically strapped custome base? Why did the Giants trade Gaylord Perry for Sam McDowell?
If we’re using sensibility as a yardstick, then someone needs to explain to me why the lottery is rigged when the Knicks get the #1 pick but not rigged when Portland gets the #1 pick. How the NBA rigs their playoff games, yet it’s been 21 years since the Lakers and Celtics have squared off. The NBA rigs games for extra profits, yet the vast majority of the finals over the past 15 years have not gone seven games. None of this adds up to me, yet we’re going to question the motives of a scumbag and convicted felon.
None of this changes the fact that the NBA needs to implement otis’ plan if it is going to retain their fan base, which they have managed to disillusion, perhaps beyond repair.

Well said Section & Otis
I disagree that the NBA forceably threw the series, I agree that game 6 was poorly officiated, and I wholeheartly agree that this is David Stern’s last chance to polish his place in history for how he handles this. His first part of his tenure was well heeded, and for good reason in some respects, but as that official core has eroded, so has the credibility in the nba.
I think another solution is that the NBA actively seek retirement of several prominent ref’s, use the NBDL as the training ground as a threat to any ref who thinks he’s too good to enforce the rules, and end this country club exclusivity that surrounds the ref’s currently.

Another (Giant) Example
What about Joe Nathan, Francisco Liriano, & Boof Bonser for Double PL-A.J. Perzinsd;lfk8jaski?
At least I can blame officiating for Game 6, the Giants didn’t even need a catcher!

Another (Giant) Example
I had a lobotomy to purge that one from my memory (the same type that Sabean had just before he made that trade). Thanks for the “refresh”...jerk! ;)

As a Giants, Raiders and Kings fan, I’ve always meant to write an essay on that several month span where all three … failed to execute on the biggest stage. But it’s so painful.

I compared it to Game 6, which should say enough
That trade and not signing Vlad the Impaler are the two biggest offenses of the Sabean era.
I could name plenty more, but those are the two that hurt the most.

Classy & Intelligent--there are worse combo's
But I’m not the biggest fan of Billy Beane and would trade him for (at least) a handful of GM’s around the league. Tops of that list is Terry Ryan if he were still around.

Billy “I’m gonna trade all our good guys and bring up rookie talent so that we compete but never really go anywhere’ Beane?

If that's your complaint
I really think you need to focus that on ownership.
Brian Sabean has been given a LARGE payroll to work with over the years, and has chosen to spend it on “proven veterans” instead of actual baseball talent.

No YouTube
Thanks for the referral to relive my pain, but as most of you know by now, ALL the clips from game 6 have been mysteriously pulled off YouTube as of today. Oh – the other games are still available, the NBA only insisted on pulling game 6. Gasoline on the fire to steal someone else’s phrase.
