"Westbrook Won't Be Available At #11"

There goes Westbrook :( and I don't think Augustin will be available either. So.. a F/C on the way to Sacramento guys.

RealGM reports:

UCLA guard Russell Westbrook has reportedly received a promise from a team selecting high in this Thursday's draft that he will not be on the board when the Pacers pick, according to The Indianapolis Star.

The Pacers have the eleventh pick, and hoped that Westbrook would visit Indiana for a workout on Tuesday. However, he will reportedly not audition for the team because of the rumored "promise".

There's still a chance

Augustin might fall to us. The pacers have more needs than just PG, so I think they will go with whoever they think is BPA, which may not be Augustin.

If they don’t, then I’d really like to see us trade 12/Salmons for 17/Ford, as so many have discussed recently.

There is a pretty good chance that at least one of Hibbert, Speights, or Arthur will be still be on the board then. That would then fill our need at PG and also give us a nice big man prospect.

Or, my pet project...

Alexis Ajinca might still be on the board at 17.

That trade won't work under CBA restrictions

It’s not possible. For trading money’s it works, but Ford’s actual salary is 3 million more than Salmons, and because the Kings are over the cap they can’t take that extra money.

That's why

Douby would have to be included.

Wouldn't work then

Ford’s trade value is only 4.1 million because he’s BYC. Let me explain again.

Ford’s actual salary is 8.2 million. His trade value (becaue he is BYC) is 4.1 million (BYC value is roughly half of the actual salary). Salmons by himself makes .4.752 dollars, so Salmons for Ford straight up works as a trade if you didn’t have the fact that Ford actually makes 8.2 million and that doesn’t work.

So either way, when it comes from a trade value with Ford, or too much money and both teams over the cap, this trade does not work until Ford is no longer BYC.

No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. It's simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get tangled, you tango on

Let me explain again since I clearly can see how confused everyone else is

The Kings have 63.245 million in salary for this season which puts them over the salary cap for the season. The Raptors have 67.252 million in salary which also puts them over the salary cap. Now if we can agree both teams are over the salary cap then we can move on.

Now, the only way you can trade for a BYC player straight up is if you have cap room. For instance. Let’s say you wanted to trade TJ Ford and the 17th pick for John Salmons. The Kings would have to at least 4 million of AVAILABLE cap room in order to make this deal work because Ford’s actual salary, not trade value, but actual salary has to be taken on while doing this deal. BYC players can be traded, but it’s practically impossible to do so unless a team with cap room gets involved. No teams have available cap room as far as I can see. Now I will try explaining this. Keep in mind that Ford’s trade value and his actual salary are two different numbers.

Ford’s salary 8.2 million Salmons salary 4.75 million
Ford’s trade value: 4.1 million Salmons trade value: 4.75 million

I believe this will help anyone who doesn’t quite understand what I’m saying but is striving to.

I was just under the assumption

...that Ford wouldn’t be traded until after July 1. That solve the BYC problem, does it not?

It also gives Toronto the assurance that Calderon will be signed, so that something strange doesn’t happen where they end up going from riches to rags at the 1.

by smgmatt on Jun 25, 2008 8:41 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah that's true too

I think that part has sort of fallen by the wayside in the trade rumor hype. Thanks smg for pointing it out.

And unlike Artest

you could make a deal in principle and then pull the trigger after the 1st, since Ford is under contract.

I don't think Toronto wouldn't trade Ford though

I just think the possibility they wouldn’t is a small factor in a larger equation. The biggest problem is that TJ makes just enough money and not enough trade value to go with it cuz of his BYC status until the 30th. BYC works well for the teams who want certain players protected under it, but the Raptors are probably better off dealing Ford after July 1st anyway.

Indy Cornrows is still trumping up the whole TJ Ford/DJ Augustin pairing with J O”neal the centerpiece of the deal for Toronto. I don’t get that from TO”s perspective, or what’s so valuable about JO, but I’ve been fooled before. The problem with trading JO of course is that his opt out/ETO is keeping him from being traded just like Artest is. It’s almost ironic and amusing in equal parts.

Promises, promises

This whole promise thing cracks me up. Why would a team do this? How can a team do this? Let’s say that Seattle makes this promise to Westbrook, but then works out a deal with Minnesota to move up to #3 and they select Mayo. Goodbye, promise.

No one know why these guys cancel workouts. Arthur hurts his back and suddnely it is rumored that the Kings have made a “promise” because they are his last workout. Toronto just had a guy (I forget who) cancel a workout. The promise rumors started flying, but it turned out that the kid didn’t make the workout because he didn’t have a passport.

My gut tells me that Westbrook will be gone by #12. But this promise stuff is really becoming comical.

Promises

Promises that he’ll be gone by 11. And if you believe that I’ve got a bridge in West Sac I’ll sell you.

Not saying he’ll be there at 11, just agreeing with Section.

JaVale McGee. I think the passport rules for flying into Canada and Mexico changed last year, you have to have one now.

I Wonder

The Clippers at #7 may want Westbrook. Seattle also needs a PG very badly but I don’t see Westbrook going at #4. Maybe New York could take him at #6 too. That seems the most likely

He can shoot, and he looks great in a suit. Hey, everybody - It's REGGIE TIME!

Agreed

4, 6 or 7 if he goes before 11. But can you see the Sonics, Knicks or Clips making a “promise?” The Sonics and Knicks have both talked about dealing their pick for the right price, so you can’t take a promise from them seriously. I could almost see it with the Clips, but if you were Westbrook would you trust the promise, given the past foibles of Sterling and Baylor?

I still think the “promise” thing is just a bunch of hype from reporters trying to fortify their opinions.

Another question

If there are these secret promises, then why do all these reporters supposedly know about them? I could see making a promise like “I promise we will pick you unless we trade the pick or something drastic happens in the next few days.” That’s as far as any “promise” I could ever believe.

He can shoot, and he looks great in a suit. Hey, everybody - It's REGGIE TIME!

They don't

At least, they don’t normally know about them. More often than not it is just speculation fueled by players not working out for teams that one would expect them to, as was the case with the recent Arthur at 12 rumors.

Usually, though, teams don’t make promises because there is too much unpredictability in the draft: Players can fall significantly on draft day, trades can come up, and certain players might make an impression during one of the later workout sessions.

Thank Goodness

I don’t want him, We’re already loaded with shooters but can’t play point. Resign beno, do what you can in the 2nd round and get that tall athlete in the 1st we need to stretch the floor and defences.

Westbrook is a bum.. Kid has no handle & barely can shoot or create a shot for himself.. He’s not a half court players, he has no half court skills. What makes people think he got what it takes to run an NBA team? He’s a youtube legend that dunk a few guys and now he’s all of a sudden a lottery pick? This is haliarious… He reminds me of Shannon Brown.. Cleveland had the same vision and it didnt work out.. We need to resign Beno.. I like Augustine but he wont be available.. Espn got us drafting Mario Chalmers now.. He’s a good player but I feel there’s better talent we can draft at that 12th spot…

by JustaRealDude on Jun 23, 2008 4:45 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Does Westbrook owe you money?

You are certainly entitled to your opinion and encouraged to share it here. But Westbrook is projected to go in the top ten, ran point for a highly ranked team for most of the season while Darren Collison was hurt, and he has improved his draft stock by virtue of his workouts.

Maybe the kid won’t make it, but I have seen nothing in print or on film that is a red flag. I know that you’re a Douby fan (so am I, which is why I hope he gets traded to a better situation). Does that play into your feelings regarding Westbrook? Just curious, as you’re more down on him than anyone has been regarding any of our projected draftees.

LoL @ section.. Im saying im just voicing my opinion on the guy.. Some people thinks he’s a good player, i begg to differ.. Go on draftexpress & read his scout report.. Im just speaking obvious facts.. I like Augustine better.. Chalmers would be a good addition but 12 is too high to use pick on Chalmers.. But westbrook in my opinion is a bum.. He could barely run a college offense, so what makes people think he’s ready to run NBA team? Especially when he can barely handle the ball and shoot? Or im just talking crazy? He’s only getting drafting based on a few highlights he had during the year… He’s another SHannon Brown if you asked me.. Augustine is the truth and hopefully he’ll be on the board when the 12th pick comes around
