ESPN: Ford reports that Portland has bought pick #27.

For the second straight year Portland has bought their way back into the first round while the Kings sit on their hands.  I was angry last year when this happened and even more so this year.  The Kings could have packaged this pick, along with their second rounder and moved close to 20, allowing them to get both the point and power they desperately need.  Is this a financial issue or are the Kings just not thinking outside the box?

To be fair -

We don’t know how much cash was involved. The Kings were one of 28 teams not to make this deal. More interesting to me is why New Orleans would make this deal, unless they are receiving a substantial amount of cash. If this was just a cap space thing with the Hornets they could have drafted a Euro that’s not coming over this year. But I doubt that’s it, since the $977,000 guaranteed to the #27 pick is just a little more than the NBA minimum contract for this year of $442,000 for a rookie.

You are correct on the amount of cash you can pay for a draft pick

Yeah this is kind of irritating

Are the Maloofs serious about building a winner? If people are out there giving away picks and we aren’t trying to get them, and yes 3 million for a pick is giving it away, then I don’t see how they can claim to be trying to improve.

And what the hell does Portland need another pick for, they already have like 25 players under contract.

They think packaging that pick for one higher than their's is worth it maybe?

That would be my guess. They’d be packaging the 27th, 13th and a player’s draft rights/player they already have to a team with a higher pick in the draft than theirs. This could be the year team’s dont mind moving down.

And the Kings couldn't have done this?

How about Salmons and the 27 to move up or deal for Ford/Barbosa.

I think they are the future Spurs.

They are going to hide nice young European talent for a year or two and then bring them over to fill holes.

Yeah

use it to trade up or stash a foreigner are the two obvious reasons.

I was just spouting off in frustration. These are the kinds of moves we NEED to be making

This is for both JJ and Kfan

The Maloof’s WILL NEVER EVER EVER do that. They’re in the NBA to make money, and not spend 3 million bucks on a rookie they would be paying less than a million his first season. They just will never do that. And in some ways, I’m wondering why the Blazers wanted to anyway. They already have some difficult decisions with young talent anyway.

I understand the $$$ but its the trade value within that pick.

The Kings could have made a ton of different moves to improve. Use a second to move up, use another second to move up, use Salmons to move up and next thing you know the Kings are sitting on two picks between 12 and 16. Or use the 12 ans the 27 to climb to 8-10. If your trying to get better sometimes you have to pay up.

I get your point and I see with you with agreement

I didn’t say the Maloof’s were right. I just said I don’t see them doing it.

trade value...

doesn’t appear on a balance sheet. $3 mil, however, does.

by misterbrister on Jun 25, 2008 6:27 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not on the cap

It does not, however, count against the Salary Cap.

As they say in business, “It takes money to make money.”

Which might also be why I’m broke . . . because I’m broke.

this is annoying

Think of the value in terms of players we were putting into the possibility of the kings getting a mid-late first round pick. Around the draft deadline I remember posting that I would have been happy with an Artest trade that got the Kings a mid- first rounder and a throw away matching salary guy. Basically Artest for this type of pick. On that note BIBBY couldn’t even get us a first rounder, we got a second.
To find out we could have just paid a few million (obviously not my money), is a little dissapointing.

In terms of Money

The Maloofs are in the NBA to make money, but that doesn’t neccessarily mean the Kings need to make money in the NBA. The advertising, marketing, and cross-promotion that comes with owning the Kings has made them celebrities (I use that term loosely) and is a big reason why The Palms is thriving. People want to stay there because the Maloofs, in their eyes, are cool. Plus, I believe that they are in the nba for money, but are equally in it for their own egos. To back up this statement you need to look no further than their attendance record when the kings are winning vs. their attendance record when the kings are losing. I don’t think they really enjoy losing, and if that is the case, then us as fans have interests that coincide with theirs.
Translation: BUY SOME PICKS!!!!!!

used to acquire veteran?

most of my draft reading has led me to believe Portland didn’t even really need their #13 pick, as they’ve got a young team already. i heard rumblings about how they were considering trading down, or even trading the pick outright. i’m guessing they acquired the #27 so they can ship both their first round picks to bring in a veteran.

maybe they’re suddenly interested in K9…

by sactoreg on Jun 25, 2008 5:11 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

Petrie is hit and miss (more hit than miss, sure) when it comes to free agents and trades. But putting more draft picks in his hands is a no-brainer. Douby aside, he’s been pretty damn consistent in the draft.

Another thing to remember

Kevin Pritchard is always on the phone. There are two reasons why the Blazers are always buying picks: (1) Ownership has green lighted the money for it, and (2) Pritchard puts himself in the right place at the right time by always being active. There’s a strong possibility that he bought the NO pick simply because he was the first one to ask for it.

As Chad Ford said in his Simmons Mock: The guy is working on roughly 150 trade proposals as we speak. He has no qualms about calling up a team and saying, “How about Travis Outlaw and Sergio Rodriguez for Dwyane Wade.” He won’t blink an eye. ... Most trade talks fail. He decided to tackle that problem by tripling the trade call volume.

Part of being lucky is putting yourself in a position to get lucky. The flip side, obviously, is that what he wants is fairly out in the open. GP has a different strategy, which is keeping his cards hidden. This has different benefits, but it also has it’s negatives as well (this being a possible example).

by smgmatt on Jun 25, 2008 8:57 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

You're exactly right.

His goal is to outwork everybody else.

It was obviously done ahead of the draft to show other teams that the Blazers have another asset, to either move up from 13 or move out and get a vet.

Since you're here...

Is there any truth to the rumors that Pritchard is shopping Outlaw and #13 for a Veteran? I thought that the Portland Front Office was high on Outlaw, so that kind of surprised me when I first read about it.

by smgmatt on Jun 25, 2008 10:34 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think there's any truth to that.

Within the last couple of days Nate McMillan has stated that Travis Outlaw will play exclusively at SF this year (he played some PF last year). It might just be a smoke screen, but it is more likely that Martell Webster is the one who will be moved. His contract comes due next year and puts a cap hold on the Blazer’s salary cap amount until his contract is resolved. Since Portland has worked hard to be well under the cap next year, I think Webster is gone.

this post

I’m glad I saw this post. I was about to start one to vent my anger. Trades like this happen every year, and yet the Kings are never involved. We picked Dan Dickau in 2003 for the Hawks in exchange for a pick that we ended up trading for nothing. I was praying for the Kings to trade Artest before the deadline to a a midfirst round pick, like the Hawks, via the suns, who had a trade exception. Now I find out that they passed on a draft pick that would cost nothing but a bit of money! Even at 27 they could’ve gotten an impact player. Jason Thompson could add some great toughness, they would be in range of DeAndre Jordan, JJ Hickson, Javale McGee, Maureese Speights, and Nicolas Batum. Anyway, the Spurs’ pick is up for option, so let’s see if the Kings can come through this time.

by rory_sayer on Jun 26, 2008 2:53 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

That was in 2002

Did we actually trade Dickau for a pick? I always thought it was a pick or cash, and it ended up being a cash transaction.

I've always had trouble tracking that pick

I thought it was tied to the Barry for Cleaves deal. As absurd as it sounds, I think we sent that pick, too.

I believe

That deal was Barry and a 1st for Cleaves, which I never liked.

by smgmatt on Jun 26, 2008 10:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That might have been where it went

Because that deal was all about saving money. But that deal happened BEFORE 2002 so it’s hard to say what exactly happened.
