Maybe Portland Won't Poach Augustin After All
No less an authority than the New York Times reports Portland might be moving all the way up to #6:
According to executives with two teams, the Knicks are discussing a swap of first-round picks with Portland. The Knicks would send the No. 6 pick, forward David Lee and another player to the Trail Blazers for the 13th and 27th picks and a player, possibly Steve Blake or Jarrett Jack. (Portland is acquiring the 27th pick from New Orleans.)
While I am 100% on board to think happy thoughts with regard to Jerryd Bayless, I'm also a realist. Anything that keeps Kevin Pritchard's grubby hands off D.J. Augustin is a positive.

this sounds like highway robbery
Let me get this straight. Portland gets the #6 pick, David (f’ing) Lee.
NYK gets 13, 27, and either Blake or Jack. (Backups at best).
WOW. Are we sure Isaiah isn’t still running the Knicks?

The rumor has an extra player going to Portland; that could be a Jerome James or Jared Jeffries.

Isanely bad trade
Wow. That’s an insanely bad trade for the Knicks, even with Jerome James included. Lee is worth the #13 and Blake/Jack by himself. There really ought to be a trade committee to review and reject trades like this.

I really wish I was more
Of a blazer’s fan than I am. Hell, I don’t even know their GM’s name… but he has put together an AMAZING team. All they need is more experience, maybe a good veteran locker-room guy and damn. I can’t even put into words how impressed I’ve already been by their players this past year, and that was without using their #1 pick. Now throw them Lee, AND #6…. Yo petrie, see if you can just trade teams with them… But they can keep any 2 players they want so we can retain Kevin.

Who do you think Portland would want at #6?
I take it by giving up Jack or Blake they’ll be looking for a franchise PG. Based on Henry Abbott’s analysis of the ideal PG for that team, they’re lookin for a guy who can defend well, and knock down open threes.
Who is that?

The closest...
...they will get to that description is likely Bayless or Chalmers.

Hmm
I thought he was referring to Westbrook, especially in regards to defense.

Definitely possible.
I don’t have any advanced metrics or anything, I was just glancing at size, steals, and 3P%. Westbrook has the body, but when his minutes increased this season his 3P% dropped dramatically.

"knock down open threes"
I think the key phrase was “open threes” . . . there’s going to be a lot of open looks in Portland with the inside presence of Aldridge & Oden, not to mention Roy as well.
That might make up for his drop in “overall” 3-pt %. Or at least that would be my thinking.

That's a good point.
Not to mention we still don’t know what he’s capable of as the full-time starting PG on a ridiculously stacked team. Consider my list amended.

I envisioned Westbrook as well...
but had no idea where he stood on 3p%. But if he’s going to be as open as people think he’ll be, he doesn’t have to be much that great from behind the line to be effective.

Unbelievable.
That is simply RIDONKULOUS.
We couldn’t pry Lee away with Artest, and now this poo-poo platter of picks gets Lee & the #6? Even shedding a bad contract in the process makes this look terrible for NYK.
But this is what happens when you’re constantly on the phone making offers.
This would make two years in a row that Pritchard has fleeced the Knicks at the draft. Great job!

I agreee
If Pritchard pulls this off, he is officially Billy Beane, Scott Pioli, and Donald Trump all rolled into one. But WHYYY does he have to be in our division?

I wish we were in your division...
we’re stuck with OKC, SL, Min and Denver. I miss the Pacific Division.
Also – see Pritchard’s not such a genius. All we got was Bayless. No smirking there – I don’t think he;s the best for the PTB.

Wow.
Chad Ford has Jerryd Bayless falling all the way to us in his most recent mock draft. If that happens I will run down my street nude.

You're not alone
I’d take either one of them. I equate Augustin to a healthy T.J. Ford (oxymoron?), while I think that Bayless is a little more like Jason Terry. Bayless is 32 pounds heavier and 3.5 inches taller, his standing reach is 2.5 inches better and their wingspans are the same. Martin and Hawes would probably benefit more on the offensive end playing with Augustin, while Bayless has the physical tools to be the better defensive player. I would think that either guy could see significant playing time before the year is over.

David Lee
Does anyone else get a little upset that the team to the north of us has built an army of great young players and is now trying to lock up David Lee? Why can’t we pull David Lee?

Sad...
And the #6 could net a guy like Kevin Love, who IMO is even better. Can we trade Petrie and the #12 for Pritchard? I’m sure it would pay off in the next few years…

Gotta have faith!
Personally I’m hoping for a series of drafts / transactions resulting in a single-year turnaround to rival the beginning of the Divac / Webber era. I know it’s not likely to happen until at least 2010, but I’ll go ahead and hope anyways.

Might need to include owners
If you want a full return on that trade you’d probably have to include the Maloofs & Larry Allen, because he’s green-lighting some of the things that’s giving Pritchard the assets he needs to make these kinds of deals (like the purchasing of draft picks, for example).

Add whoever they want to the deal and make it happen – maybe we’ll actually get somewhere on the stadium front too.
