Beno Ramifications

The Clips will pick Eric Gordon, who is not a point guard. Obviously, this would indicate they will still press hard for Beno Udrih this summer, barring trades. It has been said they'll offer the full mid-level straight away.

If the Kings pick a point guard (Bayless or Augustin), should the Kings still try to keep Beno for a few years at the full mid-level (more like $5.8 million, not the previously discussed $6 million)?

If the Kings don't get a point guard tonight, does that change your thoughts?

If we can get Bayless or Augustin… i gotta say its bye, bye Beno.

I wouldn’t give Beno 30million for 5 years based on 1 year of productivity.

I would

sign Beno to a full MLE (3 yrs./$17.4 million) whether we draft a guard tonight or not. If we do, it will take at least a year or more for that player to develop into a starter. If we don’t then we need Beno even more. We will have the room under the cap, so why not?

If the Clips offer (or are rumored to offer) a five-year mid-level deal - $30-32 million total - do you do it?

by Tom Ziller on Jun 26, 2008 1:23 PM PDT up reply actions

No

I don’t.

Development means PT

I wouldn’t sign Beno if we draft Bayless or Augustin. There’s several other backup points on the market that will come for less than the MLE. It’s not like we’re in the playoff hunt now anyway or expect to be for at least another year. Why not let our pick get those minutes and accelerate the learning process?

Agreed

I think we’d have to go 30 mil to keep Beno especially if the point guard thirsty Clips are after him.

Meh...

...if we get a PG then let the kid play and let Beno walk in my humble opinion. I’m tired of watching us limp along, playing hard, but still barely competing every night. Let’s put the Youth Movement out on the floor and get them the PT they need to progress.

Yes! let my Beno gooooooo.....

If Bayless falls, do not sign Beno. There are other PG’s out there to be had (via trade) that would have similiar annual salaries (Watkins-Ridnour- etc) but they are well into their contracts and would come off the books sooner when Bayless takes full control of the minutes available…With the “Right Youth” I am game for the Youth movement.

i’m all for drafting a PG and letting him play significant minutes.

i’m all against letting a rookie start at PG…

now here's an idea

let beno walk to LA, use the money and karma we save to snap up…Shaun Livingston? (I’m kidding. Mostly.)

How 'bout....

Instead of giving Beno $6mil/year, we buy two first-round picks each year…

I’d definitely rather have two mid-20s picks each year that we could try to package and move up the draft board for some real talent, than Beno signed long-term. I enjoyed the effort from the team this year, including Beno, but we’re definitely lacking in the talent department and resigning him isn’t going to change that one bit.

GREAT THINKING

That’s some good forward thinking. I like it.

Puts the whole “buying draft picks” into perspective, too.

by smgmatt on Jun 26, 2008 3:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Let him walk

Regardless of what the Kings draft tonight, if Udrih needs the midlevel for more than three years, we’ve gotta let him walk. This team isn’t ready to compete yet anyway, and Beno as a starter is nothing but a stop-gap solution. Ultimately, the Kings need to continue to draft well, and shed cap space in preparation to make a run at a big FA signing in a few years. Get the young core developed, and try to sign one guy that could put us back into contention.

I agree

A keeper at the 3 year MLE. Send him packing if it’s the 5 year.

Let him walk

I think the MLE for three years is too much. Sign an Anthony Johnson-level player as a stop gap until the point guard we draft tonight is ready. The Kings need to cut salary and develop young players. This is the year it needs to start. No more MLE players.

by Carl on Jun 26, 2008 3:10 PM PDT up reply actions

OK

So $3 million for a 20 something draft pick is no big deal, but the fact that Beno would cost probably $3 million a year more than Anthony Johnson is a big deal.

I watched Anthony Johnson “run” this team at the end of last season. I care not to see that again.

And

Does anybody know what the minimum salary is for a veteran like Anthony Johnson, Tyronn Lue or Jason Williams? Is there such a thing?

There's a vetern's minimum

just under 2mil?

I meant YOU

I assumed you were making a joke about the “value” of players like Johnson, Williams & Lue (i.e. Is there such a thing as minimum value for them; does that even exist?).

I thought it was pretty funny . . . I guess the joke’s on me.

by smgmatt on Jun 26, 2008 4:05 PM PDT up reply actions

No

I was honestly asking. Guys with their time served get paid a certain minimum. I don’t know what that is, but when you subtract that from the MLE it probably does not make sense not to sign Udrih, as the net differenct would probably on be $2-3 million a year.

Your (comic) reputation preceded you

On a more serious note, I believe that there’s also the Veteran’s Minimum, which leaves the MLE available, but it doesn’t change the Luxury Tax implications, so your point may stand.
