Bobcats on the clock
Which player on the board has the most college experience. Ideally, we’re looking for a 5th-year Senior here…

Woohoooooo going faster!
I’m going to re-iterate. The Bobcats will take Lopez. The Nets, either wanting to trade down with Portland, take Augustin, or perhaps they take Bayless, or perhaps they take whomever. New Jersey is the key here folks.
I repeat Brook Lopez to the Bob’s.

1. Augustin
2. Bayless
3. Lopez
I know, I’m crazy according to popular opinion on the Augustin/Bayless thing. Honestly though, I’d be cool with either one.

Possible Shawes/Lopez front court
I know this is going to be irrelevant in one pick, but wouldn’t this be the funniest looking front court in the NBA? Especially if Shawes hijacks Jason Giambi’s mustache?

Jason Thompson
Strengths: Post forward with excellent length and versatility … Though he’s already a senior, he has a developing skill set and shows a lot of upside … A late bloomer who despite playing at a mid-major has lottery pick potential … Terrific foot speed allows him to hold his own on the perimeter on both ends of the floor … Has great fluidity and athleticism and inside/outside skills … Good touch on his shot with consistent range out to 12-15 feet … Has some polished post moves including a nice jump hook … A marvelous passer for a 6-10 guy with vision and good decision making. Has a 1:1 a/to ratio, which for a post player is excellent … Rebounds the ball well … Quality defender. A factor as a shot blocker with his quick leaping ability and timing … Can handle the ball in both the half court and full court … Has the ability to face the basket and take bigger players off the dribble … High character guy. Plays with a high motor, great attitude and eager to improve. ... Hard worker who has shown steady improvement throughout his college career … Averaging 20 and 10 for his second consecutive season in college …
Weaknesses: Needs to become stronger and tougher inside … He has the frame and ability to play inside but will need to improve on those skills for the next level … He’ll need to improve on his leg strength to better fight for positioning … Must become better at using positioning for rebounds instead of relying strictly on his athleticism over less athletic, smaller players … Playing in a lower level conference makes him a tougher sell. Level of competition has not been great playing at Rider in the MAAC, he’ll have a bigger adjustment in level of competition, thought he has performed very well when facing top level competition … His free throw shooting while solid over his career has trailed off (55%) as a senior …

We have one of the most efficient scorers in the league in Martin. Petrie has devised the ingenious strategy of hiding him behind a wall of big unathletic guys and just letting him score all of our points and then stacking all these guys on top of each other for defense.

I wouldn’t say I hate this pick, I’m more confused by it. We should have traded down or picked someone else and traded our second rounders to pick up Thompson is his workouts were so good.

Jason Thompson
6’11” Center for Rider. Rider is a middle of the road team in a middle of the road conference so his numbers are not the same as someone playing in the ACC or something but his numbers are impressive. 23.5 points, 14 rebounds 3.1 blocks and 3 assists per 40 minutes. Plus he can shoot from inside 20 feet just fine and has guard skills. He is a rebounding machine that can block shots AND score. I don’t know why most everybody is so angry. Sure he may not become a superstar but who else at 12 will be? I am fine with this pick. Hibbert? No way. Randolph and Jordan are projects.

Where was this guy on your draft board?
by coolcatreportdotcom on Jun 26, 2008 5:57 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
System Score
On my system, he scores at an 89 (14 best prospect in the draft) due to his high numbers in rebounds and points as well as dishing nearly 3 assists and blocking 3 shots a game. He got a couple negative scores because he plays at the mid-major Rider, but at 6’11” he has no problem with size. Also he shot 56% from the field which is above average. If he had those numbers on a top team like Kansas or UCLA, he would be scored in the All-Star category. As it is, he just misses out on the Solid Starter level at an 89 score. Still, if he can improve past his potential he could become a solid NBA power forward for years to come according to my system.
He can shoot, and he looks great in a suit. Hey, everybody - It's REGGIE TIME!

According to Chad Ford
Wow! This is the biggest surprise of the draft. Though the Warriors liked him at No. 14, we had Thompson projected as a late first-round pick. He’s solid, but that’s it. There are much better players on the board here. Perhaps the Kings were shell-shocked after losing out on Bayless and Augustin, the two point guards they wanted.

-Jason Thomson goes 12th to the Kings! Wow. This was on some people’s boards, but damn, its still a huge shock. I’m just glad we moved him up from 28 to 23 to 14 today. Phew! This definitely throws a wrench in things. Thompson is a great kid and it will be interesting to see how he deals with the scrutiny of going this high. Sacramento told Spencer Hawes they are going out to get him a power forward to play alongside him, and it looks like they really weren’t kidding. Turns out all the Anthony Randolph talk here was a lot of smoke.

Once again I've lost all faith
I have no doubt that Thompson can contribute next year. My question is why did the Kings focus so heavily on how much he could contribute next year. Interesting enough, though, is that NBADraft.net compared him to Jason Smith.
NBA Comparison: Jason Smith
Plays with a high motor, great attitude and eager to improve. ... Hard worker who has shown steady improvement throughout his college career … Averaging 20 and 10 for his second consecutive season in college …Weaknesses: Needs to become stronger and tougher inside … He has the frame and ability to play inside but will need to improve on those skills for the next level … He’ll need to improve on his leg strength to better fight for positioning … Must become better at using positioning for rebounds instead of relying strictly on his athleticism over less athletic, smaller players … Playing in a lower level conference makes him a tougher sell. Level of competition has not been great playing at Rider in the MAAC, he’ll have a bigger adjustment in level of competition, thought he has performed very well when facing top level competition … His free throw shooting while solid over his career has trailed off (55%) as a senior …
