WTF

Why couldnt we just pick brandon rush and trade him for bayless? Package in thomas. Now we have to find a way to trade Petrie!

Lakers suck!

Doubysmoker, I remember meeting you in 1996!

You and your many friends were crying about Petrie’s draft pick back then. Who was it that you wanted? Kerry Kittles? Lorenzen Wright? Samaki Walker? Or Vitaly? Even if he’s not on the Kings anymore, I think Petrie did alright with Peja. At least, the guy is still playing. In Petrie we trust.!

2009 down the drain

Looks like we’ll be waiting for another year of the misfit roster with no talent. If I was Artest, this is definitely the last straw. Time to opt out and sign with the lakers for the mle.

Lakers suck!

Please dear God

by vfettke on Jun 26, 2008 6:05 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Hawes

At least we’ve all heard of Hawes and he was definitely projected as a lottery pick. But Thompson, this is the fricken lottery! The teams we’ve been putting on the floor haven’t been the standard 60 win teams we once had. How the hell can we draft like we have that type of team? This is it, we’re headed straight for another 30 win season.

Lakers suck!

by Doubysmoker on Jun 26, 2008 6:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Great

I’d like to believe Petrie has something else going on. If we end keeping this guy I’m sure everyone will be angry at first then be OK with it by the time the season starts and happy with him by Jaunuary.

by blako on Jun 26, 2008 6:08 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Let me make sure that I understand this

Because Geoff Petrie did not follow the reasoning of analysts and mock draft “experts”, we don’t like this pick.

Go back and read the Hawes thread from last year.

Based on his track record, I will take Petrie’s opinion over Chad Ford, Gerald Ford and Henry Ford.

Yeah, I had him going in the 20’s, but I sell auto parts for a living.

Trade down? Craft a deal, I dare you. I tried last week and couldn’t. And if the Kings liked Thompson and they were worried about the Warriors (they liked him, too), then why take the chance?

The best thing about Thompson? He has not been touched by David Stern.

Experts

Im not an expert at all. But I do know that I dont like whats been going on the last two years from this team. They’ve loaded up with a stockpile of garbage forwards, and have nobody to help control the ball. A bunch of turnover happy idiots running around. Now we’re going to eat up our midlevel on Beno, when we could have kept Bibby and salary space for next year. GODDAMMIT!

Lakers suck!

Other teams...

I don’t necessarily question the pick, although a LOT of other people are. I’ll take it on faith that the guy is a player.

My problem is the lack of other movement. Other teams managed to buy first round picks with cash, multiple second rounders, etc. The Kings could have done the same if they tried. They obviously didn’t. Shelden Williams is obviously never going to see the floor again, given they drafted Thompson. Williams and his expiring contract isn’t worth a low first round pick at this point?

by Carl on Jun 26, 2008 9:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

I was upset when they passed on Walker for Ewing Jr, but even aside from that he could still have been had for CASH.

And if Chalmers was a guy they coveted, he was available for 2nd’s and cash as well.

That means that we could have come out of the 2nd round with Chalmers & Walker, which at least seems better than what we ended up with.

by smgmatt on Jun 26, 2008 9:41 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

What has Williams done

to generate any interest? The cash part? That’s the Maloof’s call, and the odds over the years would tell you that throwing money at a late 1st round pick is a bad investment.

I combed the teams above and below us, trying to find a deal that would improve our standing while still having enough juice to interest the other team. I couldn’t do it (other than the Salmons/Douby for Ford deal).

The other thing is if I’m Petrie, I probably don’t want to deal Salmons until I know that Artest is staying. Once I know that, I still have a few months to try to deal Salmons or Artest for the PG help that this team still desperately needs. That is, if we don’t resign Udrih, which we can’t start working on until next week.

We had a hole at PF and PG coming into this draft. We may have filled one of those holes and there is still time left before camp opens. I’m at least a little encouraged.

Power Forward

So, are we using both 2nd Rounders on PGs now?

by #12Pick...who? on Jun 26, 2008 6:09 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

C

Thompson was projected as a center. Lets use the next two rounds for centers. That makes more sense than this pick.

I guess i must have been pissed that we just happened to miss out on Bayless, but the more i read about this dude it seems like he might actually turn out to be a baller. I mean, if everything im reading is right about this dude. “He had 24 points and seven rebounds against Kansas State’s Michael Beasley, projected to be one of the top two picks on Thursday, in a tournament in Orlando, Fla., around Thanksgiving. Beasley had 13 points and 10 boards.” WTF, it sounds like the warriors were definitely gonna bite and they got Randolph instead. Which I really didnt think the prospects of having someone who weighs 80 without shoes on was gonna be the toughness we needed to compliment Hawkes in the future. So the personal workouts must have been outstanding to the point where nobody really had this guy on their radar. And yeah Petrie has been right a lot more than wrong. The first year I saw Kevin Martin play it was horrible. I think he missed every single shot he took and i was mad. Now there’s no way we can get to the playoffs without him. And i was also pissed at the Peja draft. So im back on board, just a little bummed we didnt get a top point guard.

Jason Thompson

Sure, why not? I’ve come around. Let’s see where this goes. Like I’ve been harping on since the season ended, it’s all about expectations. With the Jason Thompson pick, I have no idea who he is, so I have no expectations. If he can catch ball that bounces off a rim, I’ll like him now

What the f*ck...

You’re right because everyone fcking LOVED Peja, Kevin Martin and Spencer Hawes when we drafted them. Petrie hasn’t earned any of our patience…instead he’s earned a bunch of whiny posts about who we should have taken and how he has no idea what he’s doing…because Chad fcking Ford knows so much better. I don’t disagree with Bayless disappointment, and I agree the Blazers did a hell of a job swinging for him. But that does not a bad pick Thompson make. In a draft full of a bunch of flashy one and done’s Petrie chooses someone with substance and we act indignant. I hope the Maloofs promptly fire Petrie and hire Whisenunt. You people don’t deserve him.

by rbiegler on Jun 26, 2008 6:18 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm mad

I’m mad that Bayless fell to 11 but not to 12.
I’m mad that Portland figured out what to do to get him with the 13 and Sacramento didn’t with the 12.
I’m mad that I didn’t know more about the guy that the Kings picked.

Aside from that, I’m ok.

I’m not surprised that I don’t know much about Jason Thompson, because that’s par for the course with a GP pick. I hope it works out like Hawes, and not like Douby. Honestly, I’m so upset about Charlotte & Indy taking PGs that I don’t really feel like looking into Thompson just yet, but hearing that others were high on him makes the medicine go down a little easier.

I also hope that draft karma nets us two quality guys at 42 & 43.

by smgmatt on Jun 26, 2008 7:04 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Completely Agree

When we took White Chocolate, I shrugged; when we took Peja, I wanted J. Wallace; when we took Brother Hedo, G. Wallace, Speed Racer, Garcia, and Hawes I didn’t know much about them, but just put my faith in Petrie. He was right every single time and I was wrong. Shocking, when you compare our basketball histories, I know.

This is just one more draft where I’m going to have to trust Geoff’s instincts better than mine, and I bet he is right again.

by rockrichmond2 on Jun 26, 2008 7:10 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Perhaps Geoff deserves our respect for keeping his composure for

looking around and assessing these options with only 5 minutes to do so. After all, would you pick Thompson after being sucker punched with donkey’s teeth after Bayless is picked? I wouldn’t have been probably.

Draft Boards

That’s why they make those Draft Boards ahead of time. With Bayless off their board, they just took the highest name on there. No need to assess any options because you’ve already done your due diligence ahead of time.

Had it been the StR board we would have selected Randolph, for whatever that’s worth.

by smgmatt on Jun 26, 2008 9:04 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah that's very true

I know I was one of the few people who didn’t want Randolph under any circumstances. I’m still very glad I’m in that camp, that is unless Randolph becomes an all-star. Than this message will self destruct in 5 seconds.

More on Thompson

6’11”, 250 lbs. We liked that size on Speights, why not Thompson. We wanted a guy that could contribute sooner than later, so what’s wrong with drafting a 21 year old instead of a 19 year old?

He’s a Petrie guy. He can pass and shoot the mid-range jumper. The nice thing is that he supposedly is a shot blocker and rebounder, too.

I think this guy could really fill some of our glaring needs.

SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!

by section214 on Jun 26, 2008 6:25 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Again why not focus on the upside?

Or better why not look at bringing in Speights by trading for him? I agree with you Section. I’m confused on the picking of Thompson, but that isn’t his fault. He’s our player barring a major trade. I’m willing to live with that though. I’m very much willing to live with this, as opposed to drafting Anthony Randolph or Roy Hibbert. That was totally unlivable.

No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. It's simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get tangled, you tango on

by pookeyguru on Jun 26, 2008 6:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Section I have to ask you this

Does filling our glaring needs excuse not drafting for upside when there is a strong chance this team could only win 40 games next year? Is there a real chance that passing up a Speights, or Ajinca even, was a smart move considering that Speights could contribute and be much better later on?

On the other hand Jay Bilas didn’t mention Speights had conditioning issues so that might have been a real turnoff too.

Overall Section if you had to look at Thompson, Speights, Ajinca or Hibbert who do you think has the best upside 4 years from now given all information? Maybe Thompson is that guy. And Draft Express did have him 14th. Andy Katz mentioned in his interview that Golden State worked him out also so clearly the Kings weren’t the only one interested in him. That makes me feel better.

I find the selection of Thompson curious, but mostly I wonder why Petrie didn’t try and leverage something for the pick? Oui, it makes no difference. I’m trying to talk myself into Thompson, and I hope Petrie is right with it. That’s all I will say.

No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. It's simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get tangled, you tango on

by pookeyguru on Jun 26, 2008 6:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Speights and Ajinca

probably have the most upside, but they also carry the most risk. If Thompson becomes a better player than our current power forwards, then it is a good pick at #12, I think.

I have to defer to Petrie on this one, as Thompson was not on my radar. Neither was Peja, Hedo, J-Will or Kevin Martin.

SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!

i could agree with that. If he can come in and just go for every rebound, and be average defensively, then i’m alright with that

by joeytothelimit on Jun 26, 2008 6:35 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bilas described him as a really really "solid" player

I think that’s code for I wouldn’t be surprised if he became a star. I also think the compliment of he goes for rebounds that aren’t in his area, and he can block some shots and has a good feel for the game. I really think Thompson could contribute.

So Section my next guess, is why not make a play for Thompson and Speights?

REMEMBER

Four of those guys are 2010 contract guys (Miller, Moore, K9, & SAR) and Sheldon could be an expiring this year . . . regardless of talent they could all be decent assets in the next year or two.

That leaves us with Hawes & Thompson, plus whatever we get in trade for the rest (or we cross our fingers that we get a FA).

NJ & NYK are both aiming high for LBJ, but as I’ve posted before, there are a lot of players potentially available in 2010, so we might be in a good position to pick up some talent for expiring contracts to GMs hoping to hit the JACKPOT.

Trash today could be Treasure tomorrow. Keep the faith.

‘Reef and K9(woof!) may again be non-factors (almost $15 million worth for this year alone!). That would put the front line at Miller and Moore, with Hawes/Williams/Thompson behind them.

Honestly, I felt we should of traded this pick & packaged it with one of our over payed bigman and move down in the draft and take Mario Chalmers.. That would of make more sense.. But I personally feel there were more big men better then this guy.. But the kings are starting to build a nice young team which will be good down the line.. But as far as NBA champions, thats a long way from now.. We see the trend today with NBA teams, you need atleast 3 solid allstars on your team to be successful in this league, especially the west coast… But summer league starts up next month, so we’ll see how he turns out..

From TrueHoop:

There are more than a few players in this draft with ties to William Wesley. None more so than Jason Thompson of Rider. Thompson played AAU basketball with Dajuan Wagner back in the day, and is from the same part of the country as Wesley. Now that Thompson has become the first shock of the draft - some had him going 28th, and he went 12th to Sacramento - Wesley is smiling somewhere. I heard a week ago that he might end up going 14th to Golden State, and many experts I ran that by scoffed. Everyone thought that was way too high. Turns out that was wrong. Too low!

I wonder if Thompson's upside is being excused here because it's hard to see

I really wonder about that. Because I have to believe it’s impossible to argue that there weren’t players farther down who could have been as productive as Thompson.

I think the greater question why a draft pick to draft an upside pick wasn’t brought about either. That’s the greater question in my mind, but then again I’m used to being confused by Petrie around draft time.

No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. It's simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get tangled, you tango on

He really might be decent

He had great numbers, even though it was against poorer competition. However, in addition to the fact that the Kings thought he was the best big man they worked out, I guess that’s a decent formula. Kevin Martin went to a small school. Sometimes, good players don’t have to come through big programs.

Anyone else...

intrigued by the fact that he went into college at 6ft (did I hear that right) and could have some guard skills at the 4?

Guys left with good value

DeAndre Jordan, Maurice Chalmers, Donte Greene, Darrell Arthur, Nicolas Batum. There is a lot of talent left. The Kings NEED to do something. The Rockets, Spurs, and Grizzlies are all shopping their picks.

Agree

But Batum was picked.

A few more

Greene & Arthur are also both off the board now, I believe.

I like Thompson

I like Thompson. Yes I was disappointed because we didn’t get a PG, but Thompson looks nice. Now he is a King and we got to give him love. If you’re a fan the least you can do is support the players we have.

I’m very curious about our PF/C rotation. I can’t wait to see Hawes and Thompson being together on the court.

You Never Know With Petrie ( Burp ) the Guys that got Selected in the Draft will make the Kings a Better Team. Maybe , I Hope. ( Burp ) Anyhow i want to Welcome the 3 Amigos.
Petrie does has a Good Track Record but i was Caught Off guard with These Picks. Not sure how good Ewing can be.

Josh Duncan ( Burp )

Josh Duncan is a Sleeper a forward , I’m Hearing that he is Really Good ( Burp ) and he is Undrafted , Why don’t the Kings take a Look at Him. ( Burp ) It Doesnt Hurt.

Hey Sacramento Fans...Don't Worry About Thompson

I saw Jason Thompson play many home and away games during his career at Rider.
I am a ‘72 Rider grad who bleeds Cranberry & White (our school colors) for my beloved Broncs. I may be a little biased but I really believe in this guy. One important thing to keep in mind is that he was a very unselfish player in college. The team was not just focused on him and he spread the ball around. He had a high shooting percentage and did not just hoist up shot after shot. He is just a solid all around player who does many things well. He can get rebounds, a LOT of rebounds. He has good hands, can dribble extremely well for a man his size, run the floor almost like a guard, has a nice shooting touch and is a great shot blocker. He is very fluid for his size. No gawkiness at all with this guy. I see a lot of upside for Jason. He played very well when going up against top level Division 1 competition like Kanas State and North Carolina State and I can really see him stepping it up in the pros. Sure, he might have some growing pains, but I firmly believe he has the ability and determination to become a solid pro for many years. I see him as a very positive contributer to the Kings in his rookie season. Good pick, KIngs!!!
