Sactown Royalty Draft Open Thread IV
The Kings selected three seniors on draft night: Jason Thompson of Rider, Sean Singletary of Virginia, and Patrick Ewing XVII of Georgetown.
So we have an athletic four, a diminutive point guard and a Hoya. Sounds about right.
Finish out the night in this thread. We'll clean up the mess in the morning.
And thanks for spending Draft Night 2008 with Sactown Royalty. It has been unbelievably fun.

Although I've got plenty of beer left...
I think I’m running out of steam. Not sure how much longer I can keep this up
"Rapport? You mean like, 'You run as fast as you can, and I'll throw it as far as I can'?"

I say somebody beat Petrie until he admits that Ewing Jr was a pointless selection
No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. It's simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get tangled, you tango on
Yup
Extremely pointless. I will be so bold as to predict that he will be waived before the start of next season.
He can shoot, and he looks great in a suit. Hey, everybody - It's REGGIE TIME!
Wow you really hung that one out there didn't ya?

Sam Amick
and I think kingme18 surmise (half jokingly?) that the selection will prompt the hiring of Sr. as our big man coach. Hmmm. Throw away the #43 pick for a coach for Hawes and Thompson? Now that’s thinking outside the box!

I like it!
But, couldn’t we just have invited Ewing to camp? C’mon Petrie, do some smooth talking.
He can shoot, and he looks great in a suit. Hey, everybody - It's REGGIE TIME!
"unbelievably"
I was out for a bit this evening but when the Kings made that pick that was precisely my thinking. I don’t necessarily think that’s why Sac made that pick, but that along with his Princeton background and overall ability (and it’s there) aren’t all that far fetched. The Kings have expressed the desire to woo a big man coach…
Hey,
It’s nice and clean in this thread – lot’s of room.

Blazers just traded cash for Darrell Arthur
Shocking! Portland buying a pick.
"Rapport? You mean like, 'You run as fast as you can, and I'll throw it as far as I can'?"

Arthur for CASH
Fucking A! Makes me think Petrie’s just sitting in his chair, sticking his thumb up his ass.
It's official
I am a Blazers fan.
I just wish the Maloofs would give Petrie the go-ahead to be like Pritchard and go nuts on draft day. God that asshole knows how to wheel and deal. Its bad enough we gotta worry about the Lakers ruling the West for a few more years, but when they’re all done we gotta worry about the god damned Portland Trailblazers?! Fuck
Marty Mac had Jason Thompson on the top of his list this morning.
Maybe I’ll start reading him again.
I hate Marty Mac

I’m going to step back from the computer, since I’ve been on it a week now.
It’s been real, friends.

Ray Felton
Anyone?
The Bobcats are supposedly looking to trade him.
BOOK IT!
Sure
Go get him. He makes $4.1 million this year, with a $5.5 million qualifying offer the next. For Salmons?
SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!
That's doable
And with that I’m going away for real.
No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. It's simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get tangled, you tango on
Uhhh
That would require Petrie to get off his ass and do something. Don’t hold your breath. He picked three, THREE players in the draft. That’s three times the work he normally does in an offseason. Don’t bother the guy. He needs to rest up for that one MLE signing to complete the offseason.
OK, so let's review the names...
A whole lot of nothing:
Mustafa Shakur
Kenny Natt
Mikki Moore
Chuck Person and Randy Brown
Justin Williams
Orien Greene
Nik Caner-Medley and centers Rashid Byrd, Adam Parada and Darryl Watkins
Lafayette Lever
That's what you drew from his 13 years
You didn’t even give him credit for the Bibby trade or the Udrih signing.
You don’t like the man. I get that. I do.
The KIngs sucked before GP got here, had a near decade of great success, and now they are a lot closer to sucking than they are to being good.
Portland is on the rise, due largely to sucking for a long time and getting a fortuitous bounce of the ping pong ball. Pritchard has done a great job with the opportunity (as well as the deep pockets of the owner).
OK, fire Petrie. Who do you hire, and how does that change things?
SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!
Bibby trade and Udrih signing
The Udrih signing was great. All credit due there. Given that Shelden Williams will never play another minute as a King, we got absolutely nothing for Mike Bibby. I’m not giving Petrie credit for a salary dump.
It’s not that I don’t like Petrie. It’s that I don’t like his inaction. When Petrie makes moves, they’re generally good ones. It’s the YEARS of inaction and ass-backwards way of rebuilding I have a problem with.
Portland has missed the playoffs three years longer than the current Kings team. In a few years, they’re going to be a championship team. Maybe the Kings will be on the way up in 2010. I see what other teams are doing and they loo to me like missed opportunities.
I don’t have a replacement for Petrie, but neither did the Kings when they fired Musselman. If you’re not doing the job, you get fired, regardless of whether there is a replacement waiting outside the door. I don’t necessarily think Petrie should be fired. I just want him to DO SOMETHING. Take a risk. Make a move. Sitting around doing nothing is not making the team better.
Actually
He only picked two players. They threw the dart at the dartboard for Ewing.
He can shoot, and he looks great in a suit. Hey, everybody - It's REGGIE TIME!
Better question
Does drafting Pete Carril count as a better version of a draft pick?
No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. It's simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get tangled, you tango on
And this is when we kill Petrie (redux)
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old players should burn and rave at close of day;
K-9 howling at the ignorant moon, no PGs today.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise managers at their end know dark is right,
Because their draft picks had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good players, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced, jumped, scored on wood courts,
but NO – patrick ewing jr is our new bench cohort.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild kids who caught and sang and dunked in flight,
could shoot, could play, could star in this NBA
And we learn, too late, the pick has gone its way,
because the Maloofs and Petrie refused to pay.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave fans, near death, who see with blinding sight
(can’t tell talent apart, nor get the value right)
Blind eyes could pick better players, so gay,
what the fuck is up with Petrie today?
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, Geoff Petrie, there on the sad height (in the luxury box),
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Pritchard is the manager shining a light,
Get ur ass into that good night!
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Looking good!
I like all 3 of them. In Geoff we trust… still….
It was a great night. Here in Greece it’s actually morning now 6:40 am. I still don’t feel we have playoff material and I would love to see Artest opting out. We need some loyal sane players. Let’s have some cool offseason and good night/morning everyone!
Can’t wait to see our rookies!
wait a minute?
did miami just trade 1 2nd rounder and cash to get Chalmers, to then trade Chalmers for 2 2nd rounders and cash?
Mikki Moore in the skills challenge! - LPA
holy shit, did that just happen? can someone explain this to me?
Mikki Moore in the skills challenge! - LPA
No
ESPN announced it 1st, then Silver announce it. The Wolves sent Cahlmers to Miami for a pair of 2nd round picks (future) and cash considerations.
SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!
And with that...
...I bid you all a very good night.
A lonely Kings fan in a sea of gold and purple...
Everyone can whine
But look at the stats for JT and MS. I’ll take anything close to that on the next level and be very happy. Petrie knows what he’s doing more than any of us. Anyone who wants to jump off the bandwagon for tonights draft, good, good riddance.
"I drink your milkshake...I drink it up!!!"
If anyone is jumping off the bandwagon...
it’s because they’re tired of Pritchard running circles around GP.
I’m tired of it myself, but I’m not jumping off.
It's hard to beat Pritchard
but how many roster spots do they even have? I know they don’t have enough ofr all the picks they just made.
Two different styles from two different GM’s
"I drink your milkshake...I drink it up!!!"
Running Circles
when it comes to executing deals. I’ll be even more impressed when they hang eight straight 50 win seasons…and they just might do it.
SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!
You know what it is...
it’s the impression that they’re trying to do whatever they possibly can to win. Whether or not they do it is another thing, but I don’t get the same impression from the Kings front office. Perhaps Petrie has his hands tied by the Magoofs, but it kills me to watch teams in our division appear to be working harder than the Kings to put a solid squad on the floor.
Can't argue with that
The sheer volume of deals out of Portland is staggering…and I think they just dealt Taylor to the Clippers for something.
SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!
On Perseverance...
“I may not be there yet, but I’m closer than I was yesterday.” ~Author Unknown
The author might be unknown, but it might as well be GP.
"Rapport? You mean like, 'You run as fast as you can, and I'll throw it as far as I can'?"
-Jeff Kemp, 49ers quarterback, when asked about his rapport with wide receiver Jerry Rice
Chalmers just traded for 2nd round picks and cash
With all of these picks being traded off in the second round, you’d think Petrie would have made some sort of deal. But no, that’s not the Petrie we all know and love. Instead, he sits around, being idle and content over having a sub-average season. He trades off Webber for pure crap the Kings are STILL trying to get rid of. He gets rid of Adelman.. Last year he does absolutely nothing. He passes up on a top 5 pick the year before that for Douby…
I’m about as pissed as a NY fan.
bill walker just got bill walker for cash!!!!
fuck is petrie doing? fuck is petrie doing?
Mikki Moore in the skills challenge! - LPA
More like...
fire the Maloofs. It’s quite possible Petrie might be able to pull off a move or two if he had the financial backing to do so – we’ll never know.
Holy Crap!
The NBA is fixed. The Lakers just drafted Joey Crawford!

Chalmers
The Ewing Jr. pick and Cash has to be worth Mario Chalmers, doesn’t it?
Why did Miami make that deal and not Sacramento?
I’d even be ok with back-to-back PGs (after Singletary). GUH.
Just a Guess
But I think that the Kings are keeping every penny so they can get Udrih in free-agency
He can shoot, and he looks great in a suit. Hey, everybody - It's REGGIE TIME!
So, I guess...
I’m thinking Beno’s not going to be signed at a full mid-level and Petrie’s going to sit with the status quo, do nothing this off-season, then we’ll be forced with having Douby starting PG and Singletery backup PG. What a wonderful season we’ll have, Kings fans!
Petrie
Has never been a mover and shaker in the draft. Can anyone think of a year where he made a trade during the draft? I can’t off the top of my head. I think Petrie feels that pre-season and season trades are the way to go.
He can shoot, and he looks great in a suit. Hey, everybody - It's REGGIE TIME!
He traded Dan Dickau away in 2002
That’s the only one I can remember.

Must have been sent away later
Like a year after the trade was done. (That is possible to do. It’s called a non-simultaneous trade, and they are quite common believe it or not. This O’Neal/Ford trade seems to be a good example of it.)
No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. It's simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get tangled, you tango on
Yep
Something like that. We shipped it to Detroit, and they exercised it to complete some deal with Atlanta.

( Burp ) Chad Ford Top 100
He has ( Burp ) Jason Thomson / Thompson at # 31 But he is our 12th Pick.
he has Sean Singletary at # 59 but got him at #42.
He ahs Patrick Ewing Jr at #90 But ( Burp ) we got him at # 43. Wass Sapping?
How Can Devon Hardin and Bill Walker , #$*&! The Kings Feel Asleep this Year! I Feel like i Have a ( Burp ) Hang Over. Who is Jason Thompson ? I Need a ( Burp ) Drink. It’s a Good thing i was not at the Arena I may of Gotten Intox / Intoxecated and found my self in a cell with a Guy named Bubba. I hope Petrie Knows what he is Doi / Doing. Right Now I’m Feeling Sick about these Draft Picks I’m going out side to Vomit and have me another Drink. I Lov / Love my Kings but we have Cheap Owners what is a Fan suppose to do. lol.
Chad Ford?
Just for comparisons sake, my system has it this way:
Jason Thompson – 14th (89 score/Possible Solid Starter, Solid Back-up)
Sean Singletary – 27th (86.5 score/Possible Solid Starter, Solid Back-up)
Patrick Ewing Jr. – 92nd (67 score/Roster Filler/12th Man at Best)
Not bad except for Ewing. I don’t get that one except for trying to get his pop here.
He can shoot, and he looks great in a suit. Hey, everybody - It's REGGIE TIME!
Hope you're right
Your scoring system for college players and the potential they have to make it in the league is very accurate.
Well We Need to Hire Him as a GM , I think ( Burp )
Than / Thanks for the Response But I’m Dissapointed Hope My Thinking is Wrong ( Burp ) and the Young Men turn out to Play well for the Kings ( Burp ) I guess My My Expectations were High.
Mine, too

What a great analogy
Considering that he landed at both stops on either side of us, I guess someone forgot to tell the conductor that 12 is between 11 & 13.
What an odd train. WAKKA WAKKA WAKKA!
grizz traded love for mayo and marko jaric, among others
....so the grizz currently have 11 guards on their roster. Kyle Lowry, anyone?

Yeah happened about 20 mins ago

I also think they needed a star stud like Mayo
Who could draw a crowd. Memphis is a seriously flawed team. And they traded away Gasol because he was a pouting bitch. When you’re a bad team having one star is better than having 5 good players. It’s a place to start.
No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. It's simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get tangled, you tango on
Agreed
My point was we probably don’t have the assets to bid for Lowry.
SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!
Yeah that is probably true
PG is going to be a source of discomfort I imagine for the next year or so at the very least. I do, though, doubt the level of discomfort the Kings will face if Cornstein does his “we can get better offers elsewhere” act again. Those who print such lies only believe Cornstein, and not the cap reality or situation Beno’s currently in.
Lowry I suspect, is the kind of player that would be nice to have, particularly paired with Douby, but I’m not sure if long run he’s anything more than a situational role player. Lowry’s multiple injuries concern me as well.

Not until I see the Kings only play 7 big men in a game against the Grizzlies 7 point guards. That’s a Charlie Finley special right there.
