Sactown Royalty Draft Open Thread IV

The Kings selected three seniors on draft night: Jason Thompson of Rider, Sean Singletary of Virginia, and Patrick Ewing XVII of Georgetown.

So we have an athletic four, a diminutive point guard and a Hoya. Sounds about right.

Finish out the night in this thread. We'll clean up the mess in the morning.

And thanks for spending Draft Night 2008 with Sactown Royalty. It has been unbelievably fun.

Sam Amick

and I think kingme18 surmise (half jokingly?) that the selection will prompt the hiring of Sr. as our big man coach. Hmmm. Throw away the #43 pick for a coach for Hawes and Thompson? Now that’s thinking outside the box!

"unbelievably"

I was out for a bit this evening but when the Kings made that pick that was precisely my thinking. I don’t necessarily think that’s why Sac made that pick, but that along with his Princeton background and overall ability (and it’s there) aren’t all that far fetched. The Kings have expressed the desire to woo a big man coach…

That's what you drew from his 13 years

You didn’t even give him credit for the Bibby trade or the Udrih signing.

You don’t like the man. I get that. I do.

The KIngs sucked before GP got here, had a near decade of great success, and now they are a lot closer to sucking than they are to being good.

Portland is on the rise, due largely to sucking for a long time and getting a fortuitous bounce of the ping pong ball. Pritchard has done a great job with the opportunity (as well as the deep pockets of the owner).

OK, fire Petrie. Who do you hire, and how does that change things?

SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!

by section214 on Jun 26, 2008 9:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bibby trade and Udrih signing

The Udrih signing was great. All credit due there. Given that Shelden Williams will never play another minute as a King, we got absolutely nothing for Mike Bibby. I’m not giving Petrie credit for a salary dump.

It’s not that I don’t like Petrie. It’s that I don’t like his inaction. When Petrie makes moves, they’re generally good ones. It’s the YEARS of inaction and ass-backwards way of rebuilding I have a problem with.

Portland has missed the playoffs three years longer than the current Kings team. In a few years, they’re going to be a championship team. Maybe the Kings will be on the way up in 2010. I see what other teams are doing and they loo to me like missed opportunities.

I don’t have a replacement for Petrie, but neither did the Kings when they fired Musselman. If you’re not doing the job, you get fired, regardless of whether there is a replacement waiting outside the door. I don’t necessarily think Petrie should be fired. I just want him to DO SOMETHING. Take a risk. Make a move. Sitting around doing nothing is not making the team better.

And this is when we kill Petrie (redux)

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old players should burn and rave at close of day;
K-9 howling at the ignorant moon, no PGs today.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise managers at their end know dark is right,
Because their draft picks had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good players, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced, jumped, scored on wood courts,
but NO – patrick ewing jr is our new bench cohort.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild kids who caught and sang and dunked in flight,
could shoot, could play, could star in this NBA
And we learn, too late, the pick has gone its way,
because the Maloofs and Petrie refused to pay.
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave fans, near death, who see with blinding sight
(can’t tell talent apart, nor get the value right)
Blind eyes could pick better players, so gay,
what the fuck is up with Petrie today?
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, Geoff Petrie, there on the sad height (in the luxury box),
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Pritchard is the manager shining a light,
Get ur ass into that good night!
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

You know what it is...

it’s the impression that they’re trying to do whatever they possibly can to win. Whether or not they do it is another thing, but I don’t get the same impression from the Kings front office. Perhaps Petrie has his hands tied by the Magoofs, but it kills me to watch teams in our division appear to be working harder than the Kings to put a solid squad on the floor.

Chalmers just traded for 2nd round picks and cash

With all of these picks being traded off in the second round, you’d think Petrie would have made some sort of deal. But no, that’s not the Petrie we all know and love. Instead, he sits around, being idle and content over having a sub-average season. He trades off Webber for pure crap the Kings are STILL trying to get rid of. He gets rid of Adelman.. Last year he does absolutely nothing. He passes up on a top 5 pick the year before that for Douby…

PG is going to be a source of discomfort I imagine for the next year or so at the very least. I do, though, doubt the level of discomfort the Kings will face if Cornstein does his “we can get better offers elsewhere” act again. Those who print such lies only believe Cornstein, and not the cap reality or situation Beno’s currently in.

Lowry I suspect, is the kind of player that would be nice to have, particularly paired with Douby, but I’m not sure if long run he’s anything more than a situational role player. Lowry’s multiple injuries concern me as well.

Grudge match

Not until I see the Kings only play 7 big men in a game against the Grizzlies 7 point guards. That’s a Charlie Finley special right there.

Ha!

Maybe we can have a donkey walk out a special yellow basketball.

You've been living in the suburbs too long

if you believe that the donkey will start juggling the basketball and walk at the same time.

only problem is

all the kings men and all the sonics horses don’t add up to the blazers armies. they’re six deep at the PF position!!!!!!!!!

I hear the Blazers keep all of their players in a breeding tank. They’re multiplying as we speak!

I think what they really need is toughness

And Mr. Wallace, we got Mr. Toughness right here…

Not happy

I wanted more – much more! No ‘wow’ factor here. Is Petie trying to kill ticket sales?
