Find the Kings a Point Guard

(From the FanPosts. -TZ)

The only point guard on the Kings roster is last night's second round draft pick Sean Singletary.  What should the team do to get another point guard?

Do the Kings re-sign Beno for three to five years at mid level exception of $6 million per year?  Is it better to save the $18 million to $30 million in salary to sign a less expensive point from the free agent market?  Should the Kings look at trading with teams overloaded with point guards, like Memphis and Portland?

Since we know how well Petrie listens to our draft advice, let's help him find the Kings a point guard.

hahahaha

I want us to sign Beno for five years at five million, and try again in the draft next year.

If the Clips get their grubby hands on Beno, then I vote sending BradBaby to the Bulls for Thomas/Noah and Hinrich. Throw in Shelden if we must.

If neither of that works, I vote we shoot Kevin Pritchard and steal one of his fifteen point guards. Rodriguez is a sexy name.

We can’t possibly negotiate with this dark knight. He’ll 3 card monte us for all our draft picks.

also

The Lowry-for-Shelden idea that was proposed somewhere would be awesome, in my consternations.
If we get Lowry, I vote we get us some White Chocolate on the cheap-o signed for like 3 years at 3 mill per to start, and they each play 25 minutes till Lowry shines, or we try again in the draft next year.

All good deals

Those are all good deals. Even the Walker deal (provided you send Walker home) is good in the sense that it creates time for K9 as the fourth big, which might, MIGHT be used to trade him somewhere. The team would also be forced into playing Hawes and Thompson heavy minutes, which I think is a GREAT idea. The problem is that I think the Kings would be tempted to hold on to Walker (versatility!) which would make it very, very difficult to watch the Kings play basketball. Especially if Walker squashed Thompson’s minutes.

One more comment

I’m going to say ‘No’ on $17.4 million for three years on Beno. I think Beno is decent to good, but the MLEs have to stop for this team to really rebuild. 2010 could be the year to make a big move, and I don’t want Beno’s $7 million salary cluttering things up. I would offer Beno a 2 year $12 million deal, so as not to screw up the 2010 offseason. My guess is he walks away from that offer. For now, I’ll take a middling guy like Lowry or Crittendon or a little better guy like Felton who makes less money and has a shorter contract.

by Carl on Jun 27, 2008 11:26 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The more I think about it...

the less I like the idea of resigning Beno. Where does it get us – one spot higher in the draft so we can miss the guy everyone wants by one pick again? It’s not like we’re close to winning anything and Beno wouldn’t be a big trade asset at $6mil/year, so why do it?

by cabz on Jun 27, 2008 11:35 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

if experience/PT is the key..

for our bigs/wings to develop, don’t we need someone to throw them the ball? I can’t say that I wouldn’t prefer Lowry or Crittendon (haven’t seen much of either) but at this point: PG total=O.

Well...

can’t we tank just fine with Singletary and a journeyman doing that? I mean, all I really want to see is effort and growth – I think Beno will give the effort, but I don’t think he has any growth in him (and he’s not good enough as it stands now to eventually be a key part of a future playoff run).

Raymond Felton

He would be perfect for the Kings. He’s only 24 years old. He has a good amount of points and assists (14 and 7). Just a solid young point guard to pair with Martin and Hawes and Garcia as part of our future. Bobcats are shopping him which has been confirmed by their selection of DJ Augustine over Brook Lopez.

Here’s a good deal: Brad Miller+future first for Raymond and nazr Mohammed.

We could also take Morrison or May or Carroll. We could give them Mikki, Sheldon or even John Salmons. I think the Miller deal would work because the Bobcats are in to win it all and they could pair Miller with Emeka to form a good frontcourt. what do you guys think?

by HarbirD on Jun 27, 2008 11:36 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Good deal?

Is Felton really worth Brad AND a first? I honestly haven’t watched the guy play that much, but I get the feeling that would be a horrible trade for us (unless we’re trying to tank and get the 1st pick next year).

I don’t think he is. He’s got a terrible jump shot and shots a low percentage. And I fear that he may have reached his ceiling already. Still, a 14 ppg and 7 apg isn’t too bad of a thing to have. It wouldn’t be too different from what Beno can give us, given a full year of experience on the team.

by cwebb on Jun 27, 2008 12:04 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's cheap

Felton is cheap and at least in the general area of being as good as Beno. Felton is making something like $7 million over the next two years. Beno is going to demand $18 million over the next three. The drop off from Beno to Felton isn’t that great, but the cash savings and 2010 free agent opportunities are.

So they’re going to trade their starting PG so the can go into the season starting a rookie? I’d guess Felton isn’t going anywhere for a while.

OVERLOADED

I’m really starting to think Petrie knew what he was doing with the JThompson pick – we’ll see. BUT, now we’re overloaded at 4-5 although two of them are unfortunately not useful: K-9 – stopped being an ‘energy guy’ a couple of years ago and has been exposed and of course SAR who unfortunately will just never be the player he once was. I HOPE SAR will do the right thing and take medical retirement which would free his $$ up. Otherwise, depending on Ron, Salmons and MM have to be on the trading block. I remind everyone that (unless I’m mistaken) MM contract is not fully gauranteed past December this year? Or is it next year?

Anyway, in two years we went from being too small to being too big (sigh).

I really like the guy as a team player and back-up. If only he had better hands…. (sigh)
I think Charlotte may (may) go straight up on Mikki for Felton(?) Thier salaries are very close.

I do wonder if Sheldon Williams might not arrive this year motivated – with something to prove. His fiance’s play might inspire him. He is nearly immovable defensively when he takes good position.

Myself, I’d be fine with giving Beno a three year MLE. I don’t think 3/4 of a season warrants anything more.

I also am definately inthe Ron Artest Camp and think we should offer him a three year extension at 10-11 mil with a team option on the third year + a 1 mil bonus this year for signing the extension.

He’s VERY tradable if necessary at that rate and contarct setup.

You want to pay Beno the MLE to play 3/4 of the season. He played 65 games and wasn’t even signed until Nov. 1.

You want to pay Artest $10-11 mil plus a signing bonus, He played 57 games last season. Even with his 7 game suspension taken off that total, he was injured or sick more than Beno was.

Not saying Beno deserves more than MLE money, but slapping the “fragile player” label on him is unfair.

Shelden will never, ever see the floor. He’s now the 5th big man behind Brad, Spencer, Mikki and Jason Thompson. If I were him, I’d be on the phone right now demanding to be traded or released.

by Carl on Jun 27, 2008 5:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don't know what happened

I also don’t agree with giving Artest an extension. Although, a 2 year deal with a team option for a third would certainly be better than a longer deal. Personally, if he doesn’t opt out, I think that the Kings need to trade him to a contender for an expiring and a couple of future first rounders. He bogs down the offense, and stunts the development of Martin, Garcia, and Salmons. Salmons is a really good player when he starts.

I also think they should try to trade Miller. I think that either Miami or Orlando might have interest, as they are both short a big man. Perhaps Miller for Corey Blount, filler, and next year’s first. That would give the Heat a starting rotation of Chalmers, Wade, Marion, Beasley, and Miller. Off the bench would be Haslim, and Cook.

With Orlando, it would be Miller for Tony Battie, Brian Cook, and next year’s first rounder.

By trading Miller, it would let Hawes start, therefore developing his game, start Moore at the 4 still, and back those two up with Shelden Williams and Jason Thompson. Shelden Williams’ contract is up after next year, and we need to see if he can turn into something.

In regards to the point guard situation, I would sign somebody cheap for one year, and let him, Singletary, and Douby compete for the starting spot in the fall. We drafted Douby to be a point guard, so, once again, we need to see if he can do it.

Goals for the comeing season:
Develop youth for future years
Don’t take on any long contracts (be ready to bid in 2010)
Pick up additional first round draft picks,
And suck, so that we may finally have a high draft pick, with the potential to land a true
star

by rory_sayer on Jun 27, 2008 1:45 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Trades

As discussd by others, Orlando is a great fit for BMiller – but who wants what they have? Miller has only this year and next on his contract so i don’t see how we get any better at all.
If you want to clear up more minutes for Hawes then finding a trade for MM is the better option. He was the one taking Hawes’ minutes. BMiller needs to coach Hawes another 1/2 year at least. Miller at the trading deadline – thats another matter (though I like him and am a Purdue Alum) but just looking at his salary number and wanting to trde it for equivelant salary number for yet MORE unusable PFs – no.
We need another guard – think guards.
Orlando wouldn’t get us a high draft pick either – think BAD teams.

PG Curerntly Unrestricted Free Agetns

Chris Duhon (my pick…if the price is right)
Earl Boykins
Sam Cassell (on the downside of career but still can make some noise)
Anthony Carter
Lindsey Hunter
Flip Murray (athletic but dont know if he has all the skills)
Smush Parker

I'd offer a 2 year, $5 million deal (with the 2nd year a team option) to

Duhon, Arroyo, and maybe J-Will (just for old times sake)

I was thinking along the lines of Miller for Nazr/Felton, too, but we’d have to make the future 1st lotto protected for the next three years or so. Not sure if the ‘cats go for that, if NY really is dangling Lee.

Other options include: dealing Ron for BJax (also for old times sake, and he’s expiring) and a future pick from Houston (or Brooks if they’ll do it) or one of the many PGs riding the pine in Portland, Seattle, or Memphis

by LPKingsFan on Jun 27, 2008 4:18 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Anthony Carter

I said it above, and I want to expand on it here. No, he’s not the sexy pick – but none of the above, besides perhaps Pargo or Arroyo (who are not going to be available) are point guards I want moving forward.

What we need for the next year or two is a bandaid, preferably a pass-first point guard with maturity and a high basketball IQ. Carter qualifies on all counts.

by thelettere on Jun 27, 2008 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would love to trade Miller to a bad team

but they wouldn’t want him, because Miller isn’t the type of player that would turn them into a contender. However, teams who have no cap room, and aren’t looking for it because they have a good team assembled may be more interested. Because adding a good piece like Miller, just might push them into legitimate contention. And while an early to mid 20’s pick is not ideal, it is better than nothing. In this draft, it could’ve landed us Darrell Arthur, DeAndre Jordan, Chalmers, Chris Douglas Roberts, Donte Greene, Ante Tomic, Nicolas Batum… I mean there is still a lot to get mid, to late in the first. We recently have gotten Martin, Garcia, and Wallace with late picks, and there are plenty of notable talents out there, like Parker, Ginobli, Boozer, Howard. I’d be happy with a Mikki Moore trade too, but I don’t see any way that he nets us a 1st round pick. That’s all.

by rory_sayer on Jun 27, 2008 2:15 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

You never know.

MM is still the trade that gets Hawes more minutes and could land us a late first next year. What, Hawes and MM as the two centers? (nope)

I still think Hawes needs Miller around for at least half the season and I DO think Miller has some value, he distributes/assists like no other center in the half court, would be a better rebounder next to a real solid PF and can score. 15/9 guy last season, nothing to sneeze at. We’re only out of love because the teams isn’t winning. He really could be someones missing piece.

I'd rather keep Mikki

Great energy player off the bench, which was originally the role he was signed for, as a back-up to SAR. But then Reef had the knee surgery which forced Mikki into the starting position since K9 somehow landed in somebody’s dog house. Having him as energy/veteran presence behind JT would be nice.

I still think Petrie has positioned SAR to take medical retirement, if you read his comments from about a month ago. It sounds like Petrie gave him a deadline.

I agree about Miller staying to mentor Hawes.

Trading K9 and Williams (who right now has a team-option contract and could be waived) would be my first choice, but I don’t know if it’s doable.

is it just me ...

but wouldn’t a trade revolving around garcia for lowry be the most common sense here? that seems like a pretty simple idea where both teams would benefit

TRADE CISCO? GOD NO!!!

Trade a proven 6th man for someone who hasn’t been able to prove he’s an NBA PG?

Oh hell No!

I'm with you...

and why do so many people have a hard-on for the Grizzlies 3rd and 4th string PGs? Did either Lowry or Crittendon show much in HS/College? If so, I sure missed it. Have they shown anything in the NBA? I don’t have league pass, so someone will have to fill me in on that one.

Lowry and Crittenton

Lowry has shown some promise. Crittenton was talked about quite a bit around here prior to last year’s draft, though I still don’t know if he will wind up being a 1 or a 2. Their mass appeal lies in their small contracts – not a lot of risk there.

Im going to keep it real with yall.. Quincy Douby is my good friend and i’ve been watching him work out in Vegas preparing for the summer league this month.. The kid has been working hard & has been really focusing on becoming a play maker… His ball handling skills is getting better and better.. He’s learning how to use his quickness to get to the basket and hitting open players for jumpers and lay-ups. He’s been striving hard to really be a contributor next season.. I personally feell yall wont be disappointed in him if he’s really given the chance to show what he can do next year.. I’m not saying he’s the answer to the PG issue, but he can be a solid contributor off the bench next season.. Such as Eddie House was for Boston this past year…

Quincy Douby

Note to JustaRealDude – I think that the overwhelming majority (if not everyone) here would love to see summer league footage that shows that Quincy Douby could run the point in the NBA. My God, if he showed some point skills with his shooting ability? Rajon Rondo? Rondo this!

Quincy Douby has been a great guy in the community, and from everything I’ve read (and not read) he is a great teammate. The only question has been can he fill a role that he has not been asked to fill before.

To this point in his career, I wonder how things would have turned out for Douby if he had walked into Monta Ellis’ s situation at Golden State. Or Vujacic’s situation in L.A. Alas, he is here, being asked to adjust his game for the needs of the team. I wish him (and us) all the luck in the world.

Douby isn't in anybody's minds a questionable guy in terms of character

What they doubt is his ability to transistion into the NBA as an effective small hybird SG/PG.

Come to think of it

The most questionable character on the Kings at this point, other than Ron-Ron, is Spencer Hawes himself.

Yea who can honestly say they'd vote Republican and keep a straight face?

I might also add that Jessica Alba is a championship piece, if he thinks Ron is too, more power to him. ;p -Kfan in Korea

How much

would Booby Gibson cost?

by furious.d on Jun 28, 2008 4:18 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Probably too much

since he’s restricted and I’d imagine the Cavs would match any reasonable offer.

by LPKingsFan on Jun 28, 2008 11:34 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

And he's not really a PG

If he were the Cavs would not have trying to land Bibby.

I might be wrong

but from what I saw of Bayless this year, he’s not really a PG either. I’m just trying to think of guys that I would actually want the Kings to still have when they’re playing the Brooklyn Nets in the 2011 Finals. But if the Cavs are going to pay him, I guess it’s a moot point.

by furious.d on Jun 28, 2008 3:29 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hmmm...

I’m not sure, but having Booby on the floor with Douby would sure be heaven for Jerry Reynolds.

chalupas!

...and still no answer. I says we vote. What are the options again?

a) Sign Beno for too much
b) Sign someone for too little (Carter, Williams)
c) Sign no one.
d) Kill Perie.
e) Trading for Hinrich.

Wait, how’d that fourth one get in there?

h) sign Shaun Livingston (up yours, Clippers!)
i) D-League?
j) Douby?
k) Aaron Brooks?

I Like Portland's Rodriguez

He appears expendable, but maybe if he got a decent shot with some real playing time he could turn into another Calderon. He would definitely come cheap and it would be a better opportunity for him than he will get anywhere else. In what little I’ve seen of him he looks like a fairly decent ballplayer.

That would give you Singletary, Rodriguez and Cisco as your point guards. Doesn’t look like much on paper, but the last I checked, the games aren’t played on paper.

The Kings brass is already hinting at basically the same thing without Rodriguez or another point guard.

REACHING for PG

If we’re all desperately looking for a ‘reach’ at PG, maybe it should be clear to us that there’s no obvious answer out there.

That leaves us with either trying the youngster, giving QD another shot and playing Cisco some – or Beno.

I’m fine with Beno for 3yrs MLE. I think its what makes sense. I’m also fine with the Singletary kid from Virginia (who won all those awards!) and QD and Cisco for now.

If the answer isn’t clear – don’t make a mistake we’ll regret.

if we could could make a trade for mike conley by taking memphis’s bad contracts for mikki, sheldon and possibly Cisco.

I was ready to dismiss this out of hand

But it’s not terrible for them, especially if they like Lowry/Crittendon. That said, it’s a longshot at best

I imagine that they’re planning on playing Mayo at the 2 with Gay at the 3 (now that Miller’s gone), so I don’t think they have “4 PGs” like some people are saying . . . but this isn’t horrible for them. You still have to wonder if they’re going to try and get Beasley with Mayo as the centerpiece of their offer to Miami, but Mike Miller was reportedly part of that offer, so who knows if Riley bites or not.

I’d have to look at the numbers to see how feasible it really is for this deal, but the idea ain’t half bad.
