Beno Udrih?

What's up guys,

I prowl the SBNation over at BlazersEdge and I joined here to ask you, well-informed and intelligent Kings fans that you are, the pluses and minuses of Beno Udrih's game. Unless I'm mistaken, he's a UFA this year...and I'm quite certain I'm not mistaken about the Blazers needing an upgrade at PG.

So what's the deal with Udrih? Is he part of the Kings' future plans? After he came on strong in the second half of the year following the Bibby deal, I would have thought that he'd be the heir presumptive to the Bibby throne, but all the mocks I've been reading have the Kings going after D.J. Augustin or Russell Westbrook.  Is Petrie gonna resign him, and if so at what kind of contract in terms of years/money? If he's not being targeted for resigning, why not?

Basically all I know about Udrih is he was a great waiver-wire pickup for my fantasy teams. Break him down for me, if you please, Sactown Royalty. Thanks!

He plays defense almost as poorly as Biibby does. Hes injury prone and not likely to ever come back early from anything. Hes an offensive point guard but not a great one. Hes got a nice jumper and can get to the hole but isnt great at getting teammates involved. Hes someone who is an excellent filler for a year or two but in my eyes he isnt a great long term solution.

How is he at shooting the three?

I know his stats are decent, but stats don’t always tell the whole story. Travis Outlaw shoots 40% from deep and I hold my breath every time he pulls from downtown, for example.

Amost as badly as Bibby?

I disagree. He isn’t a great defensive PG, but he is a much better man defender than Bibby. His lateral movement is superior, and, as a result, he does a better job than Bibby keeping his man in front of him. His team defense was, perhaps, no better than Bibby’s, but his man-on-man certainly was.

He didn’t have much continuity with the group we had last year due to several injuries. His assist numbers will improve the coming year should he resign.

Overall, though, Beno did a very good job for us – especially under difficult circumstances.

Udrih

He is probably the best unrestricted free agent point guard available. Given the supply and demand of NBA point guards right now, he will probably command close to a full mid level exception (my guess is 3 years at roughly $5 million per).

The issue for the Blazers is that they already have 15 players under contract, unless they can get relief on Miles or Jones opts out (I’m figuring no way LaFrentz exercises his early termination option). Rudy Fernandez has also indicated that he’s coming over this year. They’re already at luxury tax level, so whatever they pay Udrih would be doubled.

It seems that the best route for the Blazers might be trying to obtain T.J. Ford or Kirk Hinrich via trade, which would allow them to trade out some contract. For example, LaFrentz’s expiring contract and the #13 pick for Hinrich would get the Blazers their point guard without netting up their contracts or their salary cap (it would actually save Portland $4 million this year when you factor in the luxury tax).

Your thoughts about our PG situation

match those of many BEdgers (minus about Ford, whom I’m hoping we won’t touch even with a ten-foot pole—the slightest tap might break him forever). That web site you linked to with the contract information is lousy, FYI. Francis isn’t under contract because we bought him out right after the Z-bo trade. He’s on our salary cap but he’s not taking up a roster spot. Miles is neither on our cap nor our roster: in April we received a career-ending injury waiver for him.

Money’s not really an issue when you’ve got one of the world’s richest men owning your favorite sports team (thanks, Paul!) so luxury tax considerations aren’t really an issue. But from what you and others in this dia - err, FanPost - have said, it doesn’t sound like Udrih’s really worth the investment ability-wise.

Thanks for the good info

I still think that any PG solution for you will need to happen via trade. Back Miles and Francis out and you’re still at 13 players plus Rodriguez. If you retain your 1st round pick you’re back up to 15 players. A free agent PG (be it Udrih, Earl Boykins, Jason Williams, etc.) puts you at 16 players, with you paying double due to the luxury tax. I understand that your owner has deep pockets, but it just seems that the smart play will be using LaFrentz’s expiring contract to acquire a player. Maybe that means starting the season with Jack as your starter and then waiting until the trade deadline to see who might become available.

Expiring Contracts not what they used to be, alas...

because Raef’s is one of the great ones. I have a feeling we will eat it and enjoy the cap space next year. Sorry – I’m a Blazer fan, but like Sactown Royalty very much.

Christ, the Celtics are lucky to be in the Championship, when you consider the wreck Danny Ainge created until McHale bailed him out. I still can’t believe he chased Telfair.

Good PG

Look, he’s a good PG, he scores, goes to the hole ect.. After he gets his contract he’ll try harder at distributing. He had to show he belongs – and he Did. You don’t need an all-star PG to be a great team, its nice but….. looks at the celtics and LA. Sign Beno – SAVE RON ARTEST

Thanks for the comments so far

what’s the consensus on Udrih resigning with the Kings and why?

by BlazersOrBust on Jun 7, 2008 2:27 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Beno staying

It depends on the draft and whose available via trade and whats being asked for them. If we draft someone i could see beno being re-signed but to a shorter deal. if we trade for someone hes gone because whereever he ends up, hes made it clear that he wants to be “the guy”.

He can shoot the three well, his stats represent the truth there but to be honest id rather have ford over beno. im not too sure that Beno wont prove to be just as fragile but with less talent. My gut tells me he wont be a king next year but i think hed fit in well with all the talent in portland because like lietothegirls says you dont need a dominant point guard to win. beno with the exception of his defense, is very solid and wouldnt take shots away from Roy, Aldridge, or Oden.

Beno - Kings

BlazersOrBust
I think the Kings re-sign him, just not sure who’ll offer more than mid-level or what he’s thinking – but who knows???? (maybe Miami?) I think regardless that the kings should try to move JSalmons for TJFord. A little working at it and it could be a near wash salary-wise and a need-need arrangement.
The Blazers – they need to trade for a veteran or whatever, as previously noted, they don’t have the roster space to pick up a free-agent.

My guess is they’ll be quiet and see what thier roster shakes out like until mid-season and re-evaluate where they want to be. They’ll need to trade for a veteran soon though i think.

Only three teams can offer more than the MId Level

And none of the aforementioned 3 are probably too hot to trot on Beno so badly that they’ll pay more than the MLE for Udrih. Those 3 teams are Philly, Charlotte and Seattle. I’m sure you can take Charlotte out of the running because of what they’ll have to pay to re-sign Okafor. Philly has Miller and Williams. And Seattle is looking for backcourt help in the draft and will be probably trying to dump Ridnour and Watson while they’re at it.

No

Miami cannot offer more than the MLE. They are not one of the 3 teams Pookey was referencing. Whether or not they want him at all is a different question, but they cannot offer more than the MLE (just like the Kings).

by smgmatt on Jun 11, 2008 12:38 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm not sure even if Seattle can offer more than the MLE either

After you factor in rookie contracts and all that. Cuz once that comes around, that will eat up the available cap room, as will any FA that’s currently on the Sonics roster unless they waive them. In other words, signing a FA in this era is damn near possible without waiving role players to do it.

That's a good point

This is also something to remember about the mystical summer of 2010, because even with Miller, Moore, K9, & SAR coming off the books, Garcia will have had to been paid by then (and Douby & Williams would be on deck for something), plus any other players that fill those 4 or more (not counting the big FA™) roster spots will eat up most of the capspace gained in the first place.

Remember, if there isn’t at least a Playoff Ready team, no big FA is coming to Sacramento when everyone else is also gunning for the summer of 2010 as well, so it’s not like GP can just gut the team by 2010 and expect a Superstar to walk through the door and sign a contract.

It's a pretty dumb idea any time regardless of whose on the market

$$$ won't be an issue

$5.8m for Salmons
$5.7m for S.Williams if they pick up his option
$3.0m for Hawes
$3.1m for Douby if they pick up his option
$11.1m for Martin
$6.0m (blind guess) for Garcia
$5.0m (appx.) if they sign Udrih for 3 years
$1.9m for 2008 draft pick
$1.8m (blind guess) for 2009 draft pick
$1.5m (blind guess) for 2010 draft pick

That’s 10 players for $44.9 million. The cap will probably be in the neighborhood of $65 million by 2010, so you have room for a big signing. If you resign Artest you have a room for a signing but not the signing. But what is apparent is that the draft picks better develop or you’re going to have Kevin Martin and mostly a roster full of filler.

Hope for the former

If Martin & filler is the result, there won’t be a (or the) big signing in Sacramento at all.

As a side note, if the Kings sign Artest then I really hope they trade Salmons (this could also minimize the salary hit from the difference between Artest’s contract and Salmons’).

by smgmatt on Jun 12, 2008 12:03 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Good point

Does spending $13 million on Ron go down easier if you’re saving $5 million on Salmons, and get some value in return for him? I’m not sure, but that’s a different (and interesting) way of looking at it.

I think Charlotte is in the same position when you factor in Okafor's FA too Smg
