Fixing Officiating
My Dad and I have discussed this for a while and neither of us can understand a logical reason (other than the cost) for adding a fourth official to every game. While this may dilute the talent of the officials in the league by adding more, it greatly reduces their responsibilities and pressure to make a call they are not sure about. How often do we see an official make or miss a call that there is no way they could have seen from their position on the court. The cost of the addition of a fourth ref would be quite minimal compared to the salaries of the players or even the increased revenue by producing a better officiated game.
Well what do you guys think? I am wishing for someone to explain why they haven't done this as there have been so many official conspiracy theories and criticism within the last five years.

Well,
that would depend on how much better you and your dad thought getting a third ref on the floor improved officiating…
No disrespect intended.
God bless you, Corliss. You always played as though you knew how expensive my tickets were. -section214
There are people who have argued for removing the 3rd ref and going back to 2
No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. It's simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get tangled, you tango on
re: Fixing Officiating
I don’t think the root of the problem is with the refs missing calls or being inept. I think the real problem is with the League and what they decide to allow/disallow, their refusal to admit/correct problems, and their slowness in incorporating instant replay. Here’s the some things I think are the major problems, I don’t think that a 4th official wouldn’t really help.
- Clean up block/charge.
- Expand instant replay.
- Improve parity (i.e. one team/player gets to free throw line excessively)
- Further referee accountability.
Maybe I will expand on specifically what I think the league can do which each of these in a separate fanpost some time, if you don’t mind…
Hire more refs,
and make everyone accountable. You ref a bad game then your name goes to the bottom of the list and you dont ref a game for a while.
Or change college rules to be the same as NBA. Pro refs would be sent down and the college refs up based on performance.
And allow players to say whatever they want about refs. Let the stigma be known more than it already it is, and let these men be embarrassed for their shittiness.
I dont think a fourth ref is the answer but then again my solutions are not practical so maybe its just something we have to live with.

I didn't see it!
I thought the Lakers tried to get away with a lot of stuff and the officials called them for it. There’s always one or two ‘maybe’ calls but I didn’t see a pattern like you do sometimes. Complain about the 2nd foul on Kobe if you want – but I think a quick elbow to the defenders face as you receive the ball is ‘probably’ a foul and unfair advantage. Especially if its a quick offensive player – a moment is all you need to escape….
The Celtics just OUTPLAYED LA for 42 minutes. Officials see that.

Call your own
I think itd be interesting to see NBA games where players call their own fouls. Youd get to know the players more, whose tough and whose not and it would make for an interesting subplot.

Hmmm
I wanted to dismiss this immediately, but then I thought that it might lower the number of terrible “in the act of shooting” fouls called, because if you’re calling your own you wouldn’t be throwing up a prayer every time you got fouled (you’d have to stop to call it . . . if you play through, no foul).
