Theus was asked what he expects to see out of Shelden Williams this summer.
"A little smash mouth," Theus responded.

Besides Melody Guiterrez being on fire
I find this summer league attractive because you have so many potentially productive players on the eventual Kings Roster (sorta similar to last year’s Blazers summer league roster). I like that prospect personally. Singletary, Thompson, Hawes, Williams and Douby all have a chance to leave their stamp in Vegas beyond the obligatory gambling moment when you walk off the plane and flip a quarter into a slot machine.
Maybe I’m alone in finding this refreshing, but I do. I also like that it takes the focus from Looney Tunes, I mean Ron Artest. That’s refreshing too.

Agreed
Great opportunity for some of the young guys to get some playing time andshow what they’ve got. And it actually has some meaning, in the sense that we know several of these guys are definitely on the roster, and will see game time in the regular season.

Hmmm
Hawes – I’m not worried about, he Wants to be good, he has Fire, so he’ll improve. We
need a while to find out where his ceiling is.
SWilliams – Has a lot of tools to become a real defensive presence in the paint.
Does HE have the Fire? (and the feet?) I think Reggie hit it right on the
head with him.
Singletary – If he can earn minutes, prove he can play at this level, its All Good.
Douby – He got a lot to prove. he needs to shine more often than not – not just
occasionally.
JThompson – Show me you can play NOW. Show me that you’re the grown man GP
thinks you are. Show me we don’t need MM, (as much as I like the guy)

Shelden Williams
Shelden Williams won’t even get minutes in Summer League. Hawes and Thompson are going to (and should) get the minutes. Shelden needs a trade.

I don't think Hawes and Thompson will play the whole game.
So, there’s room for Shelden. I want to see what he can do, give him some minutes.

Not rooting against the guy
I’m not rooting against the guy – he put up 8 points and 6 rebounds in about 23 minutes in April, which is decent NBA production for a big guy off the bench. I too would rather see him play than old vets. I don’t think the coaching staff have any confidence in him and he doesn’t fit the style they want to play. Right now, he’s the fifth big man on the roster, behind Miller, Hawes, Moore and Thompson. Fifth big men don’t play. If Artest is traded for Odom, Williams becomes the sixth big man on the team. The reality is that he’s going to need a trade for a chance to play. Shelden would be a better fit with a team like Utah, that likes to crack people’s skulls.

That's another reason I don't want Odom
It will be too easy for Reggie Theus to use him to block either Williams or Thompson or both. Far too easy. Reggie has shown he will play vets every time, and has to be threated to play young players who have earned PT.

That's a fair criticism
It could also be said that Artest blocks the progress of everyone on the floor (including Martin?) as soon as he touches the ball on offense, so it then becomes a “pick your poison” situation, I suppose.

True true true
It’s one reason why I’m being picky about what I like for the Kings to take back. At this point a 1st round and 2nd round draft pick is the single best scenario for the Kings to improve with this young core, and potentially gain something better down the road.

Summer League
If Shelden can’t produce now, I don’t really know how mcuh better off he’d be as the fifth big and not the sixth big. I’d take Odom over the luck of the draw with Shelden, honestly. Though, I really, really hope the kid can put it together.

I think Summer League will be the deciding factor upon whether he's resigned or not
The Kings will look and see how he produces in certain ways to see if he’s worth keeping beyond his 3rd season. Otherwise they might be happy to cut his contract off the books.
For the record, and this is just a supplementary point, for those who don’t think Bibby’s trade has value just remember how close the team is to luxury tax this season, about a 500 K away or so, and remember that shedding about 10 million of that means the Maloof’s are shelling 20 million or so for a below 500 team. So, while Bibby didn’t bring back a top shelf talent, given the Kings situation, it wasn’t going to. If Shelden turns out to be a valuable big man at a lesser cost I’m good with that too. Either way, the value from Bibby being traded when he did worked out very well with this team being able to sign Beno and not pay luxury tax. I’m just saying. You people out there have to understand how important it is to not pay luxury tax when you’re a non contending team or have Paul Allen’s checkbook.

not just avoiding luxury tax...
but also getting a check from the teams that are above that line, too.
by misterbrister on Jul 11, 2008 2:39 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
$3M
The Luxury Tax distribution was about $3M per team this year. 1/30* of all $90M Luxury Tax dollars paid.
*The shares for teams over the cap go to the league, kind of like how Banks scam you for a half-penny of interest.

On one hand
On the other it helps the League sponsor Summer League games and put them on the Web. That stuff does cost money. I see what you’re saying, and I agree with you, but there is no way that that money will go to other teams. That’s the point of the luxury tax. To tax those spending excessively, and to give the rest of the teams who aren’t a share of it. The league gets the rest, and it should. I have no problem with that. The league does alot of various stuff with that money.

totally agree
Shelden was a top 5 pick, as i recall…we need to find out if he can play. He did alright his first season, then got lost last year… if we are in total rebuilding mode, i’d like to see most minutes from the 4 and 5 position going to Hawes/Williams/Thompson rather than a 40 win season with Miller/Moore/Hawes, like last year.

well, that presupposes you know what I look like, don't it?
So, na-na-na, you can’t accuse the faceless internet poster that I am!
Notice, however, that I can’t comment on what you look like, lest I get beasted… savagely.

don't try and smooth it over
“at least I would” always implies that the implied subject wouldn’t. So, that means your calling me, or the very proffesional Ms. Gutierrez ugly. Now I have you in a tough pickle, don’t I? muahahaha.
