Why Geoff Petrie Didn't Return the Lakers' Calls
The Bee's Ailene Voisin has the scoop:
From what I'm hearing - and, yes, he confirmed it - Geoff Petrie refused to return any phone calls inquiring about the Ron Artest availability between July 1-9, the period for players to declare for free agency and begin negotiating with teams. Petrie, who has a thing for following the rules, and never takes anything for granted, skipped town while waiting for Udrih's official signing. The Kings basketball president went to a Stevie Wonder concert in Reno on Friday, returned Saturday, then awakened at 6 a.m. Sunday to watch the Wimbledon singles final between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
Petrie respects authority. And Stevie.
In terms of Artestian significance, this means Petrie is not necessarily displeased with L.A.'s Lamar Odom offers. Stay tuned.

you know, if Petrie is leading me up for a big disappointment
I’m going to be…. disappointed. I’m worried he might say this just to fuel the trade fires and get other teams interested.
BTW, Turiaf has left the Lakers. innnnnteresting.

I'm confused
You dislike him being excited about the play of his teammates? You dislike that he loves exciting plays? You dislike that he’s really a fan livign the dream?
Do you prefer that players are constantly proffesional? I’m not disparaging, I’m honestly surprised that someone would find Turiaf disgusting. Please explain.

Hmm..
I’ve never actually though about putting my hatred for Turiaf in print before, but I’ll give it a shot..
From the top, I have never enjoyed watching/rooting for players with limited ability who play the “bench” and cheer in such a way that it doesnt appear to be authentic. I dont mind a guy like Matten Cleaves, who never played much, but was known for waving his towel and cheering on his boys. (Cleaves is just one example, there have been many like him over the years.Travis Outlaw in Portland and Eddie House in Boston come to mind.).I love watching “NBA fans” like Cleaves though.. Something about it just reeks of authenticity!
Turiaf, on the other hand, has become a 1-man side show in my opinion. To watch him do the “running man” and other stupid dancing shit on the sideline seems much more life self-promotion than anything. It seems much more geared toward entertaining the crowd than actually rooting on his boys. And in a city like LA, shameless self-promotion seems to be a norm! Hence, why the Fans and TV cameramen eat it up.
I could go deeper into it, but that pretty much is the basis of my dislike for his “enthusiasm” on the bench-.....Ohh and did I mention that I’m not a fan of Gonzaga basketball? So I may be a bit biased, but I have a feeling I’m not alone in my assessment.

Your problems with Turiaf lie in that you don’t necessarily feel he’s being honest with his celebration, and it’s more showboating rather than simply youthful exhuberance. I can accept that point – hell, I can even provide examples (who’s that extra Laker in the Kobe car-jumping video? This unnecessary pregame bit.)
From that, I could see how the camera time on a sub can make you detest him even more. I wonder what kind of person he is, whish we could get the real scoop.

Here's my point
I love my rivalries. I love HATING the Dodgers and HATING the Lakers. And the Niners , and the Raiders, and the Cowboys…and to a lesser extent the Celtics.
Turiaf could be the greatest guy in the world…he could be rescuing kittens and orphans from burning buildings on a weekly basis. And I will still hate him as long as he is wearing that diarrhea-colored jersey every night.
If he had any self-respect, he would have not even signed an offer with another team, as that gives the Lakers a chance to match. He should have played until he was completely free of the Devil’s shackles, then found a job with a more respectable organization.

The Lakers are a good team right now. The Kings are not. The Kings are getting better, and you make the moves that help the franchise the most overall. Maybe it means the Lakers get a better player right now, but if we’re adding a consistent, reliable player while at the same time (possibly) shedding a contract like K-9’s, then I am all for it.

Get the best deal you can
I don’t know what the big deal is about trading with the Lakers. They will still be our biggest enemy, and adding Artest certainly won’t hurt the rivalry.
And there’s always the chance that “bad” Ron-Ron could torpedo that whole franchise. How much fun would that be?

July Moratorium
OK, I read that teams can’t consumate trades during the moratorium, but I’ve never read anything that says they can’t discuss trades during this period.
Maybe it’s just that he wanted to make sure Beno actually signed before he traded Artest. If Beno doesn’t sign, then you look for a deal involving a Point Guard. That actually makes sense to me.

That was my beef with your analysis too
You mentioned this to me on the O’Neal Ford deal that teams can talk and get done things on principle, and when the appropriate time comes the “official” trade gets done.
Remember on draft day there was no official mention by the “NBA” that a O’Neal/Ford deal had been complete? That’s because it hadn’t been. They knew Hibbert was being selected by Toronto for Indy, and there was nothing the NBA can do about it.
I don’t think Petrie wanted to discuss an Artest trade before he had a chance to discuss everything with the family off the record and away from the all telling blog that the bee is showing to be their best basketball reporting asset these days.

before the 9th if Artest is involved. somehow, someway he would find a way to disrupt the deal and that would make it even harder for to anything in return for him.

Lakers deal?
What exactly does that deal do for us? Odem and k-9 both have two years left and neither is in our long-term plans, Artest would be off the payroll next year anyway….
Unless there is another nugget in it for us like Farmar the only thing we gain is a ‘potential’ trading piece next year.
There are 15 teams in the East we could probably do as well with without having to face Artest in a laker’s uniform.

Bad salary info?
Lamar Odom ($14.5M) is in the final year of his contract, just like Ron Artest ($7.4M).
Kenny Thomas ($7.9M, $8.5M) has an extra year.
The benefit is that the Kings would shed the final year ($8.5M) of Kenny Thomas’ contract (plus whatever Odom gives you – either in on-court production, via a pre-deadline trade, or a S&T in the off-season).

According to hoopshype you’re right. I was pretty sure there was another year so I’ll check other sources (they’re not always right).
Anyway, that does give some more thought to him being a deadline trade piece.
If it came to that though I’d send Artest + to Miami for (as much as I depise him) Marion. Like I’ve said, there are several other options.

Ah
But would Miami take Artest + (plus what, exactly? Definitely not K9) for Marion?
There are many, many options out there in which contracts will match, but the numbers fall considerably when you look at things like: team needs, level of contention, mortgaging the future for a possible rental, risk aversion, changes in team chemistry, teamwork, and even off-court distractions (although Marion obviously isn’t the best example there for that one).
I’m not saying Artest hits all/none of these points, but to simply say that there are 15 teams in the East, so we should trade him there isn’t looking at the forest for the trees.
Don’t forget, Denver turned down Klieza & a 1st . . . people aren’t exactly beating down our door for Artest, even if his talents suggest otherwise.

Just an expiring contract and an expiring contract the year after that for an expiring contract. Expiring contracts have value, people. HUGE value. Just look at the Gasol trade. If we want to trade off Artest, we at least want something of long term value for him, not some 1-year help.

I'm not worried about Ron re-signing with LAL
They don’t have a ton of available money to sign him to a long-term deal. Ron seems to be about the big bucks next year (part of why he had such a shit-fit this past month). The Lickers could ditch some of their other ancillary pieces, of course. But they would have to get rid of (let walk) Vujacic, as well as not match whatever huge deals Bynum will get offered.
My bet is on LAL using Artest to win next year, then letting him go to NYK, NJN for big $$$

Salary Cap In '09 With This Trade
If Artest and K-9 were sent to LA, and the Kings let go of Odom, that would put the Kings payroll at around 52.5 next year. If the salary cap hits say 60M, which is a conservative estimate, the Kings will have 7.5M to sign a free agent.
Of course, Shelden Williams and Quincy Douby have team options, so for them, if they don’t show anything, then they will be released. That’s another 6.5M, so the Kings would be around 14M under the cap.
The Kings currently have 13 players under contract, and I think Singletary will make it 14 when they give him an offer, so Petrie will probably want a 2 for 1 deal. You can’t get fair value traing Artest heads up.

And if he can he has to go through with it. You can’t fake a comeback to get medical retirement. You have to “attempt” to a comeback before you can be considered medically retired. It’s best for everyone to consider Reef part of the team until he no longer is part of the team.

Chad Ford lists the FA’s for 2009 and 2010 today on espn.com… here’s his summary:
Those who have been observing the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, New Jersey Nets and New York Knicks, among others, maneuver to create salary-cap space already have heard about “the Summer of LeBron.” That’s 2010, the year that LeBron James can opt out of his contract with the Cavs.
But the offseason of 2010 is not just the Summer of LeBron: It’s also the Summer of Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Amare Stoudemire, Ray Allen, Tyson Chandler, Manu Ginobili, Richard Jefferson, Joe Johnson, Tracy McGrady, Yao Ming, Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki and Michael Redd, each of whom can become an unrestricted free agent in 2010.
And in 2009, the list is illustrious, too: Kobe Bryant, Carlos Boozer, Allen Iverson, Ron Artest, Richard Hamilton, Jason Kidd, Shawn Marion, Andre Miller, Lamar Odom and Rasheed Wallace can become unrestricted free agents next year.

to my count
We’ll be at approx $56 mil in 2009, assuming 1) Ron and K-9 are outta here 2) Cisco gets a John Salmons type deal 3) we renounce The Landlord and pickup Douby.
My guess (I’m an idiot) for the 2009 cap is around $61M. At first glance we’re too close to make any major moves next year. BUT if SAR becomes a medical retirement (big if, I know) we’re about $11 under the cap.
Would that be enough room to make some waves?

addition by subtraction
is my idea. Subtract K-9’s contract from 08 and 09, subtract Ron’s issues (for lack of a better term), add salary cap space for 09.

Mikki
Moore can also come off the books, to make more room.
If the Kings can get under the cap next year, they probably have a better chance of signing Boozer (he’s shown that he follows the money) than getting a winning ticket in 2010.

Not to hurt your idea's but that won't happen either
The Kings don’t have enough room under the salary cap, and you have to remember certain players, and certain exceptions also have cap holds on the cap. So it’s not as clearcut as saying the Kings will have around 56 million in committed salary next season. Chances are, unless they move Brad Miller, Kenny Thomas, and don’t take back salary from the Ron Artest deal, then what you’re looking at is a summer with even less moves to make than this one.
There is no absolute way without shedding Miller, Abdur Rahim, Thomas, Artest (or whatever player he brings back) and their salaries will they have any serious money to spend on the cap. Chances are the cap will go up, but the cap is not slated to go up automatically. It’s only go to go up if revenues go up. With the economy being as bad as it is, do you think the NBA’s revenue is boudn to go up? It could go down just as easily. So don’t expect a higher cap figure automatically. or at least I wouldn’t.
In summary, because of the MLE, and other exceptions, as well as the contracts which may still be on the books by the summer of 09, there might be so little space that going after a big player may not be possible.

Kings team salaries...
Hoopshype: Sacramento Team Salary (a little out of date)
Guaranteed Salary:
2008/09 – $64,996,855
2009/10 – $45,075,215
2010/11 – $16,908,005
In 2010, the contracts of Miller/SAR/K9/Moore/Artest/Douby will all be off the books.
Realistically, if we re-sign Miller to a $5 mil/year contract, Garcia to $5 mil/year, pick up Thompson/Hawes’ options, offer Singletary a 2 mil/year contract, then include Udrih’s contract he recently signed at 6mil in 2010, add 2 3mil/year contracts for 1st round picks, in the team salary for the Kings totals out to about $46 mil.
If the salary cap is $61 mil in 2010, the Kings will have $15 mil in salary to offer someone.
If the Kings decide to not re-sign Miller and Singletary in 2010, the Kings will have $22 mil (basically a max-out free agent offer) in salary to offer someone in 2010.
We will make a big splash in 2010.

Bad source of info
Sham is a better source of info as I’ve repeatedly said. I believe the guy who writes Sham Sports, a naughty fellow named Mark from Britain, who happens to be a Bulls fan, gets alot of his info from ESPN, but if you want to check anything, check the real GM trade checker, the ESPN trade checker, Sham Sports (click on the link) and Hoopshype. I’ve checked most teams and there are discrepancies on Hoopshype particularly with waived salaries. That’s why I stopped using it.

Okay 1 other thing
Hoopshype hasn’t listed options being picked up as part of total salary. That’s the important part to remember about them. Spencer Hawes not being picked up for a 3rd season? Hell it’s very possible the Kings pick up Shelden Williams and Quincy Douby’s options for that year too. There is so little to understand here it’s hard to see it’s redeeming value. But I don’t see it, and as I’ve said before, you’re going to have shed alot of contracts in order to make that selling point work. But, go ahead.

K-9 doesn't affect anyone's 2010 plans
So there are some options. Chicago is intriguing with a possible sign and trade for Deng plus pieces. New Jersey, also a sign and trade with Artest playing with his buddy EBrand. Miami (though I hate Marion). Charlotte has room to just DO it and we wouldn’t have to take as much salary back.
NY, Marbury, in a catch and release program (if Walsh would take him).
I know none of us is that familier with the Eastern teams but there are options.

interesting
1) If I get this right, Chicago re-signs Deng and We take him? In exchange for Ron and some filler, I take it. I’d do it, but I’m not sure Chicago would. He’s by far their best player.
2) Brand is playing in Philly.
3) I hate Marion too.
4) Charlotte would have to send enough back to be within 125% of Ron’s deal. I suppose we could take back less salary, and ask for a draft pick or something? That doesn’t really help us in securing a FA though (either in 09 or 10)
5) If the Maloofs didn’t want to buy out K-9 or any of our other bloated contracts, can’t see them ok’ing a deal to bring Starbury in here.

My take
1. I don’t see Chicago swapping Artest for Deng, but I’d be plenty happy getting Deng back for Artest.
2. The only NJ trade that really makes sense for them is probably Artest & Miller for Vince Carter, because it lowers their 2010 cap and keep them relatively competitive to sell tickets until then. I don’t see any deal with Philly unless the AI talks go extremely sour, and even then they could probably do better (for what they’re looking for) than Artest.
3. Marion could be an Expiring Contract just like Odom, but I don’t think they have the same level of desperation for that last piece on their way to a Championship that LAL does. This matters because it means that they wouldn’t take K9 as part of the deal, which is the most appealing part of the Odom trade.
4. What would Charlotte want with a 1-year-rental of Artest for? What would they give up for that? Wallace? Okafor? Let’s be (very) optimistic and say that the Okafor talks stall and they want to deal him in a S&T, what kind of deal gets him: Artest & Miller? Probably not, and don’t forget that LAC’s after him now as well, since Brand’s gone and they have a hole at the 4 with cap space to spend. I was looking at Charlotte’s roster this morning and I just don’t see an Artest deal in the plans there.
5. With the Knicks you have to look at the filler they would be willing to take (if we would consider taking Marbury back). Do they take K9? SAR? Moore? Or would they aim for Miller? Would you trade Artest & Miller for Starbury’s Expiring Contract? I don’t know that it helps much if K9 & SAR are both still on the roster, since they don’t contribute on the court.
As a note to Mr. B, buying out K9 wouldn’t do much (especially at this point), as his buyout number would still count against the cap and he couldn’t be used in any trades.

Taking K9 away
May be the single biggest part of the Artest deal.
Food for thought: K9 Artest for the Clippers cap space, Tim Thomas Minnesota’s 1st rounder and an additional 1st rounder of the Clippers. You gain cap space this season to pick up a player you like potentially in a need area. (Let’s say you want Bobby Jackson badly and you have the exception to pick his salary up. Do you do it? I’m using him as an example because he has one year left on his deal.)
I don’t know if the Clippers do it, but I know the Kings would have to consider it.

I gotcha...
Essentially swapping K-9 for thomas, the balance of salary in (Ron+K9-Thomas) in cap space, and two first rounders… Not the worst trade I’ve heard of.
Is there any way that LA takes this deal? It seems a risky move for them, considering that their lineup wouldn’t even guarantee a playoff spot.

Because they traded away 2 1st rounders to Memphis already in the Gasol deal. The Kings wouldn’t get 1st rounders until 2012 at the earliest. You want to do that?

The East
1. Chicago – Why? Why does Chicago make this deal? Hypotheticals are fun and all, but the offer with Odom is based somewhat in reality (I say “somewhat” because we don’t know all the details). Chicago’s problem the last few years has not been a lack of defense, it has been a lack of offense. No matter what Ron might think, he is not an offensive solution.
2. As misterbrister pointed out, I think you meant to say Philly with Brand (rather than NJ). Philly is interesting. I can see why they would go for it, but I’m not sure who we’d be getting. I also highly doubt they would take back K-9. Seems like they are pretty much trying to remove anything that reminds them of Billy King.
3. Miami – I’d rather have Odom than Marion based on attitude. Why ship off Artest if your just going to bring in another me-first player with a reputation as a head-case?
4. Charlotte is mostly young players. Granted, they’ve been in building mode for several years now, but I don’t see them giving up many young pieces (other than Felton, Morrison, or some other scraps), for a 1-year stint with Artest. Sure they are in the easy East, but they aren’t the type of team that’s going to make the one-year play. Thinking of it now, I don’t think Miami would either.
5. New York. Good God, why the hell would we want Marbury? No thanks.

If New York really doesn't want Marbury
There’s a strong chance they’ll just buy him out. It will be easier, and he can get away from the Knicks. That’s assuming Marbury still has a career by the time this happens. Or assuming he’s healthy enough to resume a career.

EAST responses
1. Chicago – the situation has changed with the Celtics in the equation. They feel the need to shake things up ect.. Who knows?
2. I did mean Philly, and as I’ve said before if you’re trading Artest for a player not in our future plans like Odem and cap space – who cares??? We should be able to get that deal somewhere else and maybe a better draft pick as well.
3. a) Because Artest goes East and we don’t have to see him b) It doesn’t help the Lakers c) Marion would be VERY tradable for even more at the deadline (though I hate him)
4) is Charlotte Ever going to make a move? Larry Brown is no Spring Chicken and he LOVES ‘D’. Once again, if you’re just clearing space for next year – who cares? Plus we might get a young player to look at.
5) I Clearly said a ‘Catch and RELEASE’ option, Strickly to clear off K-9s $$ and maybe get a young player

Assuming this trade goes through...
I am trying to assess what would happen, mostly because I haven’t really thought about it too much. This is focused primarily on what happens on the court, so I won’t mention things like cap space, trade chips, etc.
-Our rebounding improves. Our post-up offense declines somewhat. Our passing out of the post potentially gets better.
-Our overall defense gets worse.
-We get more value out of Salmons; he was pretty horrible off the bench last year, but played great as a starter. More playing time for Garcia.
-Thompson may play less, as Mikki now comes off the bench at the 4. Thompson gets a pretty good mentor in Odom, a guy who holds a career average 9 reb/gm (i’ll take that), doesn’t dominate the offense, and still contributes about 14 pts a night.
Not really much point to my rambling….mostly thinking out loud, and sharing ;)

i agree that there isn’t too great a drop in defense from Ron to Salmons/Cisco with regards to perimeter defense…but Ron’s size/strength gave him the unique ability to defend the post effectively as well; i feel this is where the departure of his defense would have greater effect.

moves that follow...
i agree with your summary of the impact of an artestless team replaced by Odom… I do think that followup moves would then be preferrable including the moving of Mikki now, and Miller either in February or next summer. For me, its not so much the addition of Odom as the subtraction of k9 and artest, who simply doesn’t fit the style of play i think GPand Reggie want to play.

agree with the part...
about the benefit of artest and k9 leaving. A well as artest played last season, he is a ball stopper and anytime he got the ball the offense went dead. Odom plays a much more, shall we say, free-flowing style. Futhermore, while his offensive production might not be the 20/night that we want,he was still putting up 15 in the Kobe dominated system. His scoring would probably increase when he is no longer playing with such a dominating player. Early in his career (before Kobe) he had a couple seasons where he averaged 17.

there are probably many takers.
The problem with your suggestion (IMO) is that it does not bring in any assets we can use going forward. If the goal is to sign Boozer in 2009 and have a high pick, great, but didn’t the Kings just draft a PF? I don’t think I’d put my sights on a plan like that until we have a better idea of what Thompson may be able to provide.

i don’t favor a complete salary dump, in fact i think i support the Odom trade… only illustrating that most of the other options with Eastern conf teams seem to lack an return asset. I don’t want to pay nearly $400 p/game to watch a 19 win team. I think we move forward without Artest, get back a pretty good player in Odom, get another year of seasoning of Hawes by keeping Miller for at least another season… I can see moving Mikki now if you could get somone like Reddick from Orlando… a guard trio of beno, martin and reddick isn’t bad, with salmons/garcia at the 3 and Odom/Williams/Thompson at 4 and Miller/Hawes at 5…

A 2010 big splash is possible
But as I’ve said many many times 2009 is not possible. The best they really can do is save themselves luxury tax next season by doing a few adjustments here & there. (Probably wouldn’t have to be anything bigger than simply releasing Shelden Williams a year early and either signing another back up big or simply signing him to a smaller figure than his rookie contract is schedule for. Of course he could be more valuable than that and keeping him in his rookie deal may be valuable too. You do never know.)

Let me take a stab...
NOTE: Salaries estimated off the top of my head
- Ron Artest & Kenny Thomas for Lamar Odom (- $14M)
- Brad Miller for Expiring Contract X & a 1st/2nd Round Pick (- $12M)
- Shareef Abdur-Rahim for Medical Retirement Cap Relief (- $6M+)
- Mikki Moore for $1M buy out? (- $5M?)
- Shelden Williams & Quincy Douby for No Qualifying Offer (- $9M?)
Result: Some $46M coming off the books in the off-season of 2009.

Artest & K8 is a strong possibility. Moving Odom (like immediately to Cleveland) or doing it as part of a 3 team swap. Works for me!

ESPN Report
Sportscenter had Ric Bucher reporting the Lakers are VERY interested in trading for Artest and of course Odom is the player they would send the Kings. Seems pretty real to me… He did mention he can’t see the Kings helping the Lakers

Good thread
And now for my two cents (1.3 cents after taxes)...
The Odom deal:
1) Rids you of K9(woof!).
2) Ships out bad Ron (whew) and good Ron (d’oh!).
3) Gives you a good player with an expiring contract that can be traded at the deadline, or
4) shipped out via sign and trade the following season, or
5) re-signed if the price and fit is right.
6) Brings in a double digit rebounder.
7) Brings in a guy that can defer to other players.
8) > than Linas Kleiza and the #20 pick, especially when you factor in K9’s(woof’s!) exodus.
9) Can play the 3 or 4. Imagine the combinations with versatile players like Salmons, Garcia, Thompson and Odom to go along with Martin, Udrih and Hawes and the rest of the gang.
10) 2 for 1 frees up the roster.
As far as making the Lakers stronger, who cares? In a year he’s going to demand big bucks and either go elsewhere or strap the Lakers with a long term contract. It will be both the best and worst thing that we could do to the evil empire.
As far as other possible trades, they are not there until another team acutally offers something, and it has to do more for the Kings than what’s listed above.
If this deal is real, I’ll take the bird in the hand. Deal the talent and distraction that is Ron Artest, get rid of one of the bloated contracts and receive a versatile player with versatile options in return.

I think the delay is finding a 3rd team
Outside of the Clippers who would rather have Shawn Marion, I think another strong possibility is Cleveland. They have a 1st round pick, and an expiring deal that would match up money wise with Wally Szczerbiak. I’m not proposing this as a strong possibility, but isn’t an expiring deal in Wally (just cut his ass is what the real deal would be) instead of Odom is the best of both worlds?
Besides, Moving K9 and Artest, not having Odom, and getting a 1st in the deal could be worthwhile could it not?

Not Bad
I’d like 2 picks since they’d both be late rounders, but I could live with that.
If they did this trade right after acquiring Odom, I wouldn’t even mind holding on to Wally until the Trade Deadline, just in case we could milk something else out of him.

Agreed
I agree that Wally & a 1st is the most likely scenario, but I don’t think two 1’s are out of the question…..
Gasol: Salary Dump, Prospects & two 1’s
Kidd: Salary Dump, Prospects & two 1’s
Shaq: Salary Dump, Four-time All-Star
...
Odom: Even Salary, No Prospects, & two 1’s – this isn’t outrageous at all.

That deal would have worked too
Because you would have dumped Artest’s salary off this season. Eh, apples & pears. If the organization can dump K9’s salary and get a 1st rounder back you can say waiting was worth it. But I would have rather dumped Artest at the deadline myself. I don’t see the upside being really worth that much, other than maybe convincing the organization that Artest isn’t worth building around long term.

Count me out...
unless we can get more for Odom.
Taking Kenny Thomas off the books doesn’t necessarily get us anywhere. Sure, I don’t want the guy to see the floor in a Kings uniform ever again, but he can also be buried on the bench. Unless we would be using the money to go out and sign a player next year, there isn’t much long term benefit to dumping him one year early. The list of free agents doesn’t look too great next year (some big names, but they’re mostly in their 30s).
If the idea is to flip Odom for an expiring contract (which he is anyhow) and a late first-round pick (which can be bought for $3million or traded for an early 2nd round pick), are you really getting much of value?
Unless Petrie has something up his sleeve that he needs the additional cap space for a year early, I really don’t see how this deal does much for us… we basically end up with a late 1st round pick for Artest. Would they sell Artest for $3 million? And if so, wouldn’t the Kings have been much better off telling him to opt out, saving millions, and using that money to buy a couple picks in the draft (a really deep draft)?

Interesting
I disagree with you about the value of dumping Kenny’s contract, but one thing you mentioned really caught my interest:
...wouldn’t the Kings have been much better off telling him to opt out, saving millions, and using that money to buy a couple picks in the draft (a really deep draft)?
Since the draft was before his opt-out date, the Kings could have taken this approach, and at $3M per, they could have basically traded his opt-year for two 1’s and cash. That’s a really interesting idea, actually.

Yeah -
But they could have also bought the picks anyway. Personally, I’m not a big fan at throwing $3 million at a pick that historically does not pan out. “Deep” drafts are determined three years after the fact.

Think about this...
For the sake this discussion, let’s assume that Artest is traded for a similar expiring contract and a first round pick.
The Kings now have to pay $7-9M for the player received, and for that they get a first round pick. Had they simply convinced Artest to opt-out, they could have used the exact same money to buy 2-3 first round draft picks (this year or next).
I understand that the Kings could buy draft picks anyway, but if you look at it as a single transaction “Artest for 2-3 First Round Picks”, then it’s the best trade package you’re likely to get for him, and the money has already been accounted for in the budget!
Here’s an example:
The Maloof’s green light GP to find the best value for Ron Artest and his $7.4M contract (125% + 100k). GP tries to trade Artest for Linus Kleiza and a 1st, Denver balks. GP then decides to use that $9.25M+ ($7.4M * 125%) to acquire three 1st Round Picks and convinces Ron to opt-out so he can do so within the limitations of his finances.
I’m just saying that it’s a great way for a team to work within a budget, and maximize value within said budget. The fact that this $9M doesn’t count against the salary cap is just gravy.
I’m not saying that this is the “greatest idea ever”, but it does have some legs in regards to working with what money you have. This is very much a “Moneyball” type of idea, in that it’s spending money in an unconventional way that gives the highest return.
Note: I just realized that GP could probably only acquire two picks, as the contracts of the players picked would ALSO need to fit into the budget as well . . . but that’s still as high a return as many of the trade options mentioned otherwise.

Yeah I'm with you on that one too
Deep drafts take 3 4 5 years to pan out. How many people thought that Peja Stojakovic and Steve Nash would have like 7 All-Star appearances between them in 1996? It takes up to 5 years to properly evaluate the draft. Or it did with High Schoolers coming out. I don’t think it hurts the NBA to have players to go to college, but I do think that kid going to Europe will eventually regret it. (I also think that kids who do that find themselves in the same query that European Kids do coming over to the NBA.) I think Brandon Jennings situation is rather unique because of his low SAT scores.
I think trading Artest and using him to get rid of K9 and get a 1st round pick brings a ton of value that doesn’t show up in the box score. You won’t pay luxury tax for the 09-10 season guaranteed. You get a 1st round pick that you can develop as a sleeper pick, either taking the time to develop by sending to the NBDL, or develop in Europe, or you simply find a player that can help you win now. Petrie will find a way to make that type of asset work for him. Especially since he’s so focused on building the core from within.

I think there are a several options besides the Lakers.
Is Odem in our long-term plans? I doubt it, AND he hurts the possible development of Thompson and SWilliams.
Remember, as much as we don’t want K-9 (and probably few other do) he doesn’t affect anyone’s 2010 plans!
And we’d probably get a slightly better pick.

Wally plus a pick. Wally doean’t expect to be a starter so he gives some nice minutes off the bench + Vet leadership and is again – ‘pretty’ tradable at the deadline.
On Offence – Labron plays the 2 (pretty much does it anyway)
On defence – Artest guards the 2s most of the time

Anyone?
Look up a dozen or so posts (start with Section’s soon-to-be-glowing comment), because we’ve already been discussing Cleveland as a possibility (with Artest or Odom as pieces sent).
You seem to have this chip on your shoulder, in which you’re the voice of reason who doesn’t want to send Artest to the Lakers, when the truth is that most people seem to think that the Lakers have the best (if not most likely true) offer on the table at the moment (assuming they take Kenny Thomas).
Just as you are demanding that everyone else look at deals in the East, you need to remember not to exclude the Western teams as well. I get that you don’t want to make the Lakers better, I really do, but it’s not like any of our posturing will actually make a difference in what the Kings to with Artest anyway, so at some point you’ll just have to accept that LAL is a possibility, while also looking to see what other options are out there as well.

Well...
Since the basis of LttG’s stance is that by trading Artest to the Lakers it makes a division rival better, I used that as the baseline for my counter-argument.
I’m for taking the best offer on the table, and if Artest ends up in LAL then I’ll be crossing my fingers for an eventual implosion.

i think
this mentality comes from baseball and football, where the divisions are much smaller, and the repercussions of trading within a division are so much greater. In the NFL, 2 games against your division rival (out of 16 total games) makes a much bigger impact, especially considering that only 6 teams make the playoffs in each conference.
Same with baseball. I don’t know the numbers, but it seems like Giants play the dodgers about a billion times a year, and only ONE team in that division will make the playoffs.
In the NBA, you play 4 games a year against every team in your conference. 4/82 is not that many. Considering that you play two games a year against all the Eastern teams anyway, who cares about a measly two more games a year?

Probably
I also think it’s blown out of proportion in those cases as well.
If you can get a comparable value from outside of your division, then maybe the end result is a better deal for your franchise, but if the highest value happens to be from a rival, ignoring that value for not other reason than the division they’re in seems odd to me.
