Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

Summer League Begins

All times Pacific.

Sat 07/12/2008 1:00 p.m. vs Toronto Raptors
Tue 07/15/2008 7:00 p.m. vs Portland Trail Blazers
Wed 07/16/2008 3:00 p.m. vs Dallas Mavericks
Fri 07/18/2008 7:00 p.m. vs Golden State Warriors
Sun 07/20/2008 5:30 p.m. vs Houston Rockets

Today's battle between Spencer Hawes and Andrea Bargnani should be fun to watch, but Friday's Golden State game is the one I'm waiting for. Anthony Randolph buried 30 points on Friday in his first Summer League appearance; as little as this competition means, big output is still impressive.

All games will be available on NBA.com. Use this as an open thread if you watch today's game.

For the record

Hawes will be matched up against the Aussie beast Nathan Jawai, and Thompson will check Bargnani. I think Thompson will do really well because he seems to defend finesse guys really well.

by Scirocco on Jul 12, 2008 9:57 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What do you base...

your comments of Thompson’s D against finesse guys on? Just curious, because I’ve only heard of him playing well against Beasley.

Is Bargnani playing?

His name isn’t listed on the Raptors’ summer league roster. Jawai’s name is also absent.

Observations statistically

Shawes with the near Double Double. Good. Shelden with the Double Double and perfect from the line. Excellent. 7 boards from JT and a made 3. Nice. Douby scored 20 pts and including 9-11 from the line. Bootiful. I like it.

The bad is 13 assists to 24 turnovers. I don’t like that. It’s Summer League, and it’s young players. It’s expected under both scenarios. It’s still bad for professional basketball. I hope to see that ratio tighten up by the 4th or 5th game. I’m hoping for it anyway.

I liked Singletary’s penetration abilities, but I don’t like his vision. He clearly needs to see how to pass into pick & rolls as Venomy pointed out.

JT needs to relax, and Spencer needs to pick his shots a bit better. Quincy needs to be a gunner, and more efficient at it. Quick observations. Now it’s time to sleep.

No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. It's simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get tangled, you tango on

Good Stuff

I also noticed that Matt Walsh has a very nice stroke from deep. He could be one of those 3-pt sharpshooters like Steve Novak.

He can shoot, and he looks great in a suit. Hey, everybody - It's REGGIE TIME!

Bill Artest

From HoopsWorld

The more likely team continues to be the Lakers, who are reported to be more interested in Kenny Thomas now that it’s fairly clear they’re going to lose Ronny Turiaf to the Warriors.

Ron Artest just walked into the gym here at UNLV wearing a Knicks hat . . .but we’ll try not to make too much of that.

There’s also a quick analysis of the “Five Teams” reportedly interested in Bill-Bill

Well

I still like Miami in any deal assuming the B-Easy comes to Sacramento instead of Shawn Marion.

Any combo that will net us B-Easy without given up Kevin, Cisco or Shawes is fine by me.

BOOK IT!

My boy Q had a solid game.. He’s going to keep improving as the summer league progressess… If you go on NBA.com they have his picture up as the main picture on the website… I’m real happy for my boy because I watched how determined he was in Vegas working out earlier this summer to make a statement in the summer league.. he’s off to a good start

Here, here. Let’s hope he keeps showing us his game.

Just so long as they don't try to make him a point guard

All he showed was that he could hit jumpers. He had a lot of trouble finishing around the hoop, although he drew lots of fouls. His ball handling/passing was every bit as bad as it was last year. Either we live with him as an undersized two or he doesn’t have a spot.

I agree with you. All he showed tonight to me was more poor decision making that illustrated how he’ll never be a PG of any value; he was making all his jumpers, which is great, but that’s all he really brings to the table.

Couldn't catch the streams

What did you guys think about JT and SS?

by Bluejohn on Jul 12, 2008 4:08 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Jason:
+ Extremely athletic, big, quick, and aggressive. Great ball handler and passer for a guy his size; obviously has experience as a guard. Showed that he has a wide variety of skills. Hit a three-pointer and then shortly thereafter got a left-handed tip in traffic, very tenacious.
- Seemed frustrated by the higher level of competition. Looked lost at times. Made (correctable) mistakes, and had a hard time adjusting to the whistles.

SS:
+ Quick as lightning with excellent ball handling. Split double teams easily off pick and rolls. Flashy passer in traffic, and could penetrate defenses with an insanely quick first step.
- Poor shot selection. Decision making needs work; would take off-balance jumpers when other plays were available. I got the feeling he was just making things up as he went along, and not following/planning what kind of play he was going to make.

JT

JT looked nervous at the start and made some silly fouls, he then showed what some of his strengths are, nice post move when he got the ball on the block, hit some jumpers and can dribble and pass, I thought SS missed a number of pick and roll chances by dribbling in to the double team. JT and Hawes will be an interesting combo, JT needs to fight for rebounding position better with his legs. I was encouraged with what I saw from JT, he will improve every time out
