Artest is talking with ESPN, again, now seeking a trade.
CAB with the find -
Marc Stein has the scoop. Lots of interesting tidbits. Artest is aparently getting the cold shoulder from the Maloofs and no longer feels as if Sacramento is loyal to him. Stein also mentions that the Lakers are hesitant to part with Lamar Odom. He's also become his own agent.
I'd like to think that this is a big developement because he's more or less demanding a trade (I think?, right?, oh wait, he is, I just re-read the title of the ESPN article), but this isn't the first, second or 100th time he's pulled this b.s. on us. I will certainly be uping my daily ESPN and StR visits from 5 times a day to 50 over the next week, but sadly I think I'll end up being dissapointed by Artest, again.

Oh and for the record
When it comes to Artest, I have totally lost a grasp on what is, or isn’t significant anymore. If I read this about any other player I’d say this trade was a lock to go down. And even though much of the article has to do with the stance of the Lakers, Jerry Buss and otherwise sane people, Artest’s craziness has infected me a sense of uncertainty that is making me question my own sense of reality.

Lakers dont want to part with Odom?
Pah-leese. Without Odom coming and K9 going, there isnt even a discussion to be had. I want the 2011 first roundr or next years second rounder on top of it all.

To clarify
A team cannot trade consecutive first round draft picks, and the Lakers just traded two of them to Memphis (2008 & I assume 2010), so the earliest pick they could trade would be 2012, and I don’t know if there are any rules against trading a pick three seasons in away.
by smgmatt on Jul 13, 2008 5:54 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
We don't really need Odom for his expiring contract
We don’t even need to include K9. I wonder what LA would think of this trade: Farmar, Walton, Koby Carl for Artest. They solidify a lineup, keeping Odom in it as a 6th man. We get 2 nice backups for the PG and PF positions.

Part of trading with the Lakers
Has to be depriving them of something. The Lakers are probably better with Artest than with Odom. But giving them Artest without taking Odom away is just too much for Kings fans to stomach.

Revenge is so Machiavellian
I don’t want Odom, but I would like to see a useable player. And why the hell would the Kings need Luke Walton? (I still think the delay is finding a 3rd team to find Odom since the Kings don’t really need him.)

I'm happy
I think this is great. Petrie has no choice but to trade Artest now. He isn’t going to be able to hold off any longer. I don’t think this damages Artest’s trade value. He sees the handwriting on the wall and is just elaborating on what he’s already said in the past week. It’s better for Artest and the Kings to be in a different situation. I’m willing to bet that Kobe is pushing for this trade to go down, and Petrie isn’t going to take any less than Odom and K9. We’re finally going to see some movement. Soon.

Joe Maloof's comments
Make sure to read Joe Maloof’s comments in the sidebar of the original article. He says seven teams are vying for Artest’s services. I don’t know if he’s basing that on speculation in the media or inside information, though I would assume he knows what offers have come in.
If this is true, the Kings will get good value for Artest, and I’ll give all credit to Petrie for waiting. (Assuming Petrie doesn’t wait until the deadline, which would be insanely stupid at this point.)

As far as Ludden he says it’s over. He’s probably right, but with these matters I prefer to say that when it’s actually happened as opposed to befofe it does.

Artest had loyalty
by not opting out and the Kings organization are simply thinking of themselves by asking him not to as many were. Artest was thinking of the team. They treated him badly and now a trade is inevitable for the organization and for Ron. But Lamar Odom is soft, a decent rebounder, and when Ron goes to the Fakers and they become a great team giving Kobe the great back up scoring and defensive partner on the court he needs. I’ll be sick..It would be nice to get rid of KT but can we do it without making the Lakers a better team?

Petrie specifically said that he told Ron that it was his decision to make and he would not pressure him either way. If Artest had loyalty, he wouldn’t talk about other teams all season long. We’ll never re-sign Odem. So, we make the lakers better for a ‘few’ extra wins this year?I don’t get it.
He’s a good starting PF, which helps us this year. If he fits in, we can offer him $7-8 million to re-sign, because that’s what he’s worth at his age and at this stage in his career. If he doesn’t fit in, we can let his contract come off the books for cap space, or trade him at the deadline as a big expiring to get back a very valuable asset.
You can dislike the trade for a lot of reasons (and I know you do) but from a business/financial standpoint, it makes a lot of sense.

The other problem with doing that smg, is that Atlanta, or whichever team would have insisted on the Kings taking dead weight back. I don’t think a deal would have gone down. As it was Bibby didn’t have that many suitors. That’s pretty telling isn’t it? Every rumor with Artest has K9 going with him, and not a single rumor about Bibby ever leaked with him taking another player like K9 along for the ride. I find that telling.

Ron is right
He is getting screwed, and I can understand the frustration. For all the off-the-court hi-jinks, he brings it when it counts, on the court.
He’s also right about the Kings screwing up and firing Adelman and bringing in the ballboy to coach for a season. That and the injuries and a few missteps by Petrie have really set the franchise back.
I think they are headed in the right direction, and I think a team with Artest on it has a chance to be a big surprise this season. Despite Ron-Bill’s assertions, I think there’s still a fair chance he’s in the opening day lineup. I think the Lakers will back out on Odom, and everyone else will try to make Petrie blink with crap offers he will turn down.
I also blame the Maloofs in this saga. They threw out the false love for Artest, and he bought into it. In hindsight, maybe Ron probably should have thought more about Ron. But, face it, the dude is stuck in a box, with $15-million-a-year talent but a $5-million-a- year reputation. Which makes him a pretty good deal in the $8-million to $10-million per year range.
That’s really what the Kings should do, lock him up for 3-4 years for a contract in that neighborhood. And though things don’t appear to be headed in that direction, the ball sometimes takes a funny bounce, so we’ll see.
