Summer League Action Game 2 vs Portland

Since the normal thread isn't up I thought I would introduce the topic for everyone to comment on the game (if they so choose of course). Obviously I hope Greg Oden plays, and see how Spencer matches up, but mostly I'm interested in seeing how well Douby matches up with Koponen, the Norwegian big guard drafted 30th overall last year by Portland. This is the 2nd part, I believe, to any future success by Douby. The ability to shoot, and handle the ball some, plus guard players 3-4 inches taller than him. If he can't, and he may not, then his future in this league will probably remain in doubt, and ultimately in peril. So here's to the Summer League 6 (that's what I'm going to call them) Enjoy! And Go Kings.

Are talking about JT and Shawes. both say the national blah blah about both. We know better, and the stupid comments commence. What a shock that is right?

Petteri Koponen and Jerryd Bayless are getting talked about

I suggest watching how Koponen and Bayless play together because they represent one half of Portland’s potential future backcourt with Rudy Fernandez and Brandon Roy being the other half. This of course is the other feature of Portland’s backcourt which is big ball handling guards (Koponen and Roy) and a legitmate sized 2 guard with Fernandez and an undersized 2 guard in Bayless. Boy, if these guys all develop that team is going to be scary. This doesn’t even mention Sergio Rodriguez.

I heard

That Greg Oden is not going to play in the Summer league. They will wait until the fall camp to play him I believe. The game is on channel 416 in Sacramento (NBATV)

He can shoot, and he looks great in a suit. Hey, everybody - It's REGGIE TIME!

Yeah it's on channell 416 in Seattle too

(Or it is on digital cable.) And Shelden Williams is in the starting lineup not JT.

The Kings are in Black and the Blazers in grey (for those who haven’t figure it out).

I lov eto see a shooter get to the FT line

Douby getting to the line is a good sign. He can beat guys off the dribble. If he can shoot consistently from the outside he is a scoring guard. That I think will be his challenge, and every teams integrating him into the lineup of course.

The best deal they could get?

Seriously – that’s the best deal they could get? At 3.61 blocks per game? I’m not buying it. I have to think they could have taken back a player from the Warriors or Sixers to get under the tax. I haven’t crunched the numbers, but this just seems ridiculously one-sided. I guess the upshot is that Artest doesn’t have to worry about going to Denver.

You have to wonder if Iverson for Marbury is next.

But it was also on purpose too. I didn’t want to moan on about a summer league game. Since when do pre-game opinions of summer league matter? The point is to get a feel for your young players. We’re getting that. I’m happy. (I’m sure Jt’s performance, all joking aside, had to make you happy if you saw any of the highlights. The best part was definitely JT out running 6 guys down the floor and Singletary finding him for an easy hoop.)

I do appologize

I was watching the All-Star game tonight, so I missed out on what looks like a great game of commenting. Lets hope this momentum holds up for the season. I’ve got a good feeling. (hey-yo!)

I figure it's either some new gang talk

or they’re terrorists calling for a strike.

Or it’s from a commercial that I can’t see over here.

Experiment I'd like to see

Five minutes of JT at the three –
Singletary
Douby
Thompson
Williams
Hawes
How many three-man skills does he have? Clearly I don’t want him developing into a three, but it would be nice if he could play it.

Bayless...Bayless

Was he the rookie that hit the game winner? Oh, wait. That was Jason Thompson.

Bayless looks like he’s going to be a player, though someone issued the blanket MArco Belinelli warning earlier.

Nothing intended

But the wound is still fresh as we were hoping that he would drop to us. May work out well for everyone, though. I think that Bayless will help you at both guard positions, but I don’t think that he’ll be an NBA point for awhile. Of course, teamed with Roy that does not matter as much.

Before the draft, everyone was hoping we get Bayless, Westbrook or Augustine.. But Douby just showed us he can do what Bayless could do and probably prove he’s better… The guy got it done on both sides of the balll… I hope he’s starting to open your eyes to what he can really do now…

by JustaRealDude on Jul 15, 2008 11:56 PM PDT reply actions

I'll believe Douby can do it when he does it at the NBA level

Douby is a much better defender than Bayless is at this point though. That much is obvious right now.

In my opinion, Douby gambles on defense a little too much. Sometimes the stars align and he gets 5 or 6 steals in a game, but sometimes he’ll go for something and then get completely burned on a pick and roll.

by jeremy548 on Jul 16, 2008 12:23 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah the Blazers figured him out by the end of the game

That much is true. But Douby’s defense for the most part was one reason the Kings didn’t outright lose. He & Singletary gave up a ton of size ot Koponen and Bayless and it really didn’t matter tonight as much as it should.

Yeah, the individual defensive efforts were pretty good by Douby and Sean! Team defense, however, was pretty lousy as most of the time when someone would get beat on a pick, help either never came or always came late. I noticed that was something that was killing Sean defensively, despite how well he played his man (at times).

His quickness certainly benefits him on both ends, though! He’s shown the desire to be good defensively, which is a really great thing to see.

Guarding a guy 4 or 8 inches taller than you is no easy task

I think the fact that they matched up so well means both guys play bigger than your height. You look for that on defense when you’re a coach, or I hope Theus was looking at that. Nevermind that Hawes was utterly awful tonight on both ends. He was absolutely worthless the whole game. Hopefully it lights a fire under him for the next 3 games.

Nice to see The Landlord

banging around inside and scooping up rebounds and put-backs. We need that kind of play.

It’d be great if he could continue to improve his game a notch or two and help out this season.

I agree

I don’t get why people look down on him. He bangs, and rebounds really well. I hope he plays a bigger role next season

by kingme on Jul 16, 2008 1:50 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm really happy about Thompson's nice stat line but..

..the way he scored wasn’t very promising. Most of his baskets where in traffic without him using any post moves, just clumsy drives. I’m still very cautiously optimistic about him.

On the other hand Douby was beautiful. His strong drives, good passes etc, his passion. He was great. I wish he could play like that during the season. We have to make some plays for him, try to feed him off the screens. I think he would be great.
