Around SBN: 2012 Budweiser Shootout Entry List Released

Jason Thompson has drawn comparisons to Karl Malone. [...] Thompson, the forward out of Rider who was picked twelfth overall, runs the floor so well that an unknown member of the Utah coaching staff told the Kings he hadn't seen a big man go end-to-end like that since the Mailman himself. And Thompson does more than just get to his spots, too. He finishes.

Is that a backhanded dig at Malone? If so, that’s awesome.

I think it’s more a dig on the 2007-08 Kings frontcourt, who had a woeful time finishing.

Crazy talk

Karl Malone? After three summer league games? That’s crazy talk. You don’t compare Jason Thompson to Karl Malone until he’s injured at least a dozen NBA players.

by Carl on Jul 17, 2008 9:52 AM PDT reply actions   1 recs

How do Thompson's elbows look?

You think he could break a man’s jaw?

Singletary mentioned in the article

Singletary’s reviews are good by all accounts. I haven’t been able to watch the games, but his shooting numbers are terrible. Can anyone comment? Is Singletary another Jason Hart?

by Carl on Jul 17, 2008 9:53 AM PDT reply actions

loved this quote about singletary
I’ve been very impressed with Singletary defensively. The former football player has feet like a cornerback, able to stay with his man in a full-court backpedal and be the sort of active pest that Ronnie Price used to be for the Kings

by sactoreg on Jul 17, 2008 9:59 AM PDT up reply actions

Kind of looks like Prices jump shot as well but...

more of a facilitator which is why Price was allowed to walk.

I can see sean playing regular minutes.

I wouldn’t be suprised at all if he’s playing 15-20 solid minutes per game by mid-season. Both for his defense, and his distribution. If he averaged 5 assists, and a couple steals I would be elated, but not suprised.

by dkons21 on Jul 17, 2008 10:01 AM PDT up reply actions

Some of it is shot selection Carl (i saw all 3 games)

Some of it is where he is getting his shots. He’s not a good outside shooter, and most teams have figured out they can’t let him penetrate and are daring him to hit that shot.

It's pretty much the stock response for a young player with a shaky outside game

But that’s exactly Singletary’s problem more or less.

The good part is

If he works at it, he can become a good shooter.

by Carl on Jul 17, 2008 1:42 PM PDT up reply actions

He can at least improve at shooting from the outside

Practice makes improvement Carl. To what extent he’ll improve? Meh, no clue. Luck, I suppose, would dictate that.

Just an observation

Really, the only thing I see Thompson needing to work on is his release point. He definitely releases the ball to low, he should watch some footage of KG and Rasheed Wallace. Outside of this one complaint (which can be corrected), I’d say he has all of the tools you can’t teach i.e. running, jumping, intellect, and a feel for the game. Just think of how good he’ll look playing with the veterans.

This has to be the first time in NBA history that “He runs the floor like Karl Malone” has ever been used as a compliment.

So-

If JT = MAlone, then does that mean that Kevin Love = Jon Koncak and Brook Lopez = Joe Kleine? Poor rich bastards.

I think Jason Thompson plays more like Chris Webber. Before the knee injury that is.

Do I count as a pundit?

Despite my not reading closely Brad Miller’s answers?

by pookeyguru on Jul 18, 2008 12:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes, but...

the reason I found it telling was because the other pundits keep referring to JT as being the next (anyone but Webber).

I know it’s only summer league, but I’ve really enjoyed watching this kid (with the CWebb smile) play. I know it can’t translate into the regular season, at least for awhile, but I like him.

And I’ve already forgiven you for not reading Brad’s answers closely. For the record, I still can’t see where you came up with the allusions to steroids, but you do follow the NBA a LOT more closely than I do so it could be my fault.

Your Sacramento Kings: Another day, another drama.

by KK on Jul 18, 2008 10:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Some of those answers really reminded me of the Steroid/HGH scandals KK

They really did. I also read it quickly and on my way out the door to running to make my bus. That being said I agree with Dalt. He has some Chris Webber like skills and developed body that Chris had. The major difference, of course, is that Chris was a far bigger name than JT is now. But, yeah, JT definitely reminds of Chris Webber at a younger age (and I just didn’t want to say it).

We should be so lucky

The voice of sanity says that we’ve now compared the guy to Karl Malone and Chris Webber. No pressure. And these comparisons aren’t going to look silly at all in six months. ;)

There are many voices here,

it just depends on which ones you choose to listen to…wait, are those all in my head?

I like most of what I’ve seen so far, I know he can’t do these things once the season starts, but I like what I’ve seen. He shows promise and I like that! The only trait I can claim to have attributed to another player is his great smile. : )
