Miller's Mea Culpa
Via SAmick's blog: There's honest and then there's honest. Just wow. At least for me, but hey, I might be biased.
I just want to try and take advantage of all of the resources. As soon as I get back to Sac, I have to go and talk to a doctor and stuff, just try and take advantage of that. Obviously, I know I'm an idiot for putting myself in this situation. Sometimes things have to get really bad before I fix things in my life, and that's (how) it's been my whole life. Telling mom and grandma wasn't a great conversation to have, obviously. It was pretty tough trying to take the high road.
(snip)
It's tough to sleep, you know. And you know, the people who might think I'm a bad guy for this. I'm not a bad guy. I'm still me. It's just one thing I thought would help. It obviously wasn't the right thing to do, but it was helpful to my mental state. I have normal Brad and the when-I-get-on-that-court Brad. (snip) Back in the day, I was worse. It's nothing like it ever was. Obviously, the little one has changed a lot of my philosophies and a lot of the ways I act.
(snip)
The thing is, I don't like drinking anymore. A couple years ago - I'll say it - I drank way too much and didn't like who I was. It wasn't good for my relationship and basketball and everything. I'm just trying to find a way to change out of that, that relief. When all that came in, I haven't done it in years during the season. I just drank and that wasn't a good thing to do. I didn't like that person at all
(snip)
When I make a guarantee, I stick to it. This ain't going to happen. I guarantee everybody that. If you think this makes me a bad person, you don't know me. I've made mistakes. Everybody makes mistakes. I just happen to be in the NBA and everybody sees it. I'm not a bad person. I'm the same person day in and day out, just try to be laid back and be the same person.
I'm not even sure what all he's talking about because Sam's questions don't seem to return on point answers every time. Just um, wow.

What the hell was HE talking about?
I’m confused actually. Some of these comments seem related to steroids honestly, not mary joo wanna. (But if it’s pot no big deal. It is, after all, only pot.)

Pookey, pookey, pookey,
did you read the linked article? I admire your Kings knowledge so I hope that you did.
I dunno…maybe as a fellow worrier/insomniac, I sympathise. I haven’t made his same choices, but I’ve been tempted. I’m still tempted…sometimes you just have to be able to sleep and you don’t want to turn to prescription (or other illegal) drugs or alcohol to get there.

If you read the link to Samick’s blog, I think it becomes clearer that he’s talking about pot in the current failure but I can’t speak to what his two previous failures were, even though Samick’s blog alludes to it being his third MJ failure and his answers speak to that as well. Plus, I think the CBA speaks to the fact that those were both MJ related.

It almost seems like Pot certainly
But some of that struck me as stuff you heard in the steroid/hgh scandals. (Don’t care about that either honestly. May Barry Bonds rot in hell though. Or more accurately, the idiots who couldn’t get enough of Barry when he was on top, and act like he doesn’t exist now that he’s not setting baseball records at 40 years old. That still includes Barry though.)

It seems like
He is making his “problem” public on purpose, forcing himself to stop, if that makes sense. While the problem may or may not be very big, it seems like he thinks that if he makes it public then EVERYONE will hold him accountable, which in his mind would be a good thing. Kind of like Barkley saying he is going to stop gambling. By making it public he has forced himself to stop because if he goes out and gambles he knows he will get a public backlash.
Same for Brad but on a smaller scale. But now teammates, friends, whoever, probably won’t ask him to go out for a beer or light one up. Ok, this is supposed to be a basketball blog, not a kings personal life blog. enough out of me.

Good point re: public accountability. Guilt and shame actually work wonders.

Bad person
It’s interesting that Miller mentions people thinking he’s a bad person multiple times in the interview. I just don’t get that in any way. It’s perfectly OK to drink yourself stupid as much as you want, but not OK to smoke pot at all. I understand that pot is against league rules and the law, but I absolutely believe that alcohol is a worse drug.
On soapbox
Any problem I have with Miller or Josh Howard has to do with breaking rules they knew were there. Smoking pot is such a ridiculously minor transgression that it shouldn’t even merit a discussion about what “kind of person” would do it.
Off soapbox

Agreed. Even with Howard and Miller, that Howard kept his usage to the offseason makes it even less an issue, because as far as I know they don’t test then.

just because it's legal
to drink yourself into a stupor, doesn’t necessarily make it OK. I try to live by the Grandma rule: Don’t do too many things that I wouldn’t want to tell my Grandma about.
Notice I said too many things.

Never would have made the news
Drinking yourself into a stupor doesn’t make the news unless you drive while doing it. Keon Clark drank before, during and after games and we never heard a thing about it, nor (apparently) did the league do anything about it. When I say it’s “OK” I just mean that it’s socially acceptable, not that it’s actually OK.

Good for Brad
...for owning up to this publicly. I’d like to think that making 12 million a year means you have no problems, but clearly that’s not the case. I wish him the best of luck overcoming whatever personal demons he has, and the soul-baring he did here makes me more of a fan than before. Kudos.

Mo money, mo problems
Hell, I think having that much money and fame creates as many problems as it solves. Brad Miller can’t go out in public without being pestered constantly. I can only guess that this gets really old really fast. Everyone he’s ever known (family, friends, elementary school classmates) has probably hit him up for money at one time or another, and if he says no, they hate his guts. Obviously being an NBA star has its benefits. But sometimes you just want to be left alone to lead a normal life. Miller and NBA players in general don’t have that luxury.
by Carl on Jul 18, 2008 9:24 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah more so with basketball then other sports.
Its really hard not to notice a seven foot guy right in front of you. At least if you’re playing baseball or something you could have a normal height.

Anyone else think
That maybe Brad’s resurgence last season had to do with him quiting drinking?
The thing is, I don’t like drinking anymore. A couple years ago – I’ll say it – I drank way too much and didn’t like who I was. It wasn’t good for my relationship and basketball and everythingThe time line adds up and alcohol doesn’t help everyone on the court like it did Keon.
I might also add that Jessica Alba is a championship piece, if he thinks Ron is too, more power to him. ;p -Kfan in Korea

Certainly couldn’t have hurt.
Also, another example of the great impact Musselman had by getting arrested on a DUI and reportedly visiting … establishments with his players.

Did anyone here Koz this morning
He was being a bit of an arse about the whole thing, FP whom no big fan of said when they played the interview that he seemed contrite and sorry for what had happened, and I think you have to take Brad at his word. But Koz was either being contrarian or to me seemed to be anti what Brad was saying almost like he knew more about this situation than everyone else.
I don’t think the league really cares whats its players do but for PR and image reasons they need to address things like guys smoking weed and getting DUIs
The other asinine thing Koz said was that Brad should be reaching out to schools while he was out and talk to them about the evils of drugs, I thought was a bit much. I would suggest the shame of being caught and having to deal with this and the nearly $700K he will lose can’t be fun either
by Murf on Jul 18, 2008 1:16 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
And that $700K
goes to NBA charities. How much have you donated there, Koz?

Overblown
Usually I like Koz and I didn’t hear his comments, but it sounds like he’s talking out of his ass on this one. If Brad Miller were to tell kids about the dangers of pot, he’d be lying: “Don’t smoke pot kids, because it can cost you 8% of your $12 million per year salary! Plus, you’ll snack a lot and be popular at concerts. JUST SAY NO!”*
