Well Presented!

You got this thing down! (And it’s not semi-official when it’s well done. It’s certainly official.)

Does that make me Stockton to your Malone?

Any other website to watch it at?

The NBA.com feed is horrible

It's not on NBA TV so

I think that’s all you’re gonna get.

NBA TV went cheap

Up till now I was somewhat impressed with this web coverage. All the other games worked well and had great commentary. This game not only has poor graphics (only a score and is slow to update) but it sounds like the only have one mic. You can’t hear the floor or croud. Also the announcer sounds like the PA annoucer. I’m guessing there was a mad dash for the airport being Sunday and only a skeleton crew stayed behind to do the last game.

by KingsFan on Jul 20, 2008 9:23 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

It was the PA announcer.

The game wasn’t on NBATV. It was just a web cast of the game. Much better than nothing imo.

Kinda funny you don't like big men who don't play in the post

With your name being Cwebb. Maybe I only find that ironic.

As far as summer league it is only that. I agree we both realize that.

I'm going to assume away from the court failure

Because on the court he didn’t have many. He did try to win, and if nothing else, he did care.

Some people have suggested he could also be used as a 3

Just testing it. Once he adds some more muscle to his frame there’ll be no doubt he’s a 4

by eduardo_m7 on Jul 20, 2008 5:52 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah

but would rather get JT minutes and we need to get Sheldon some PT. So JT starting at the 3 this game, but he’s played quite a bit of 3 over the previous games too.

so I have no idea. I assume we just wanted to let others have a chance on offense, but I have no basis for that assumption.

Don't forget Shelden Williams

I’ve noticed a lot of the attention has been on Hawes, Singletary, JT and Douby, while Williams has gone almost unnoticed. I think Williams has toughened up a bit. If he can show he can bang on the post, he’ll be a solid defensive option for the Kings.

by CloudyEyes on Jul 20, 2008 7:05 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I agree completely

He and QD came out to show they had enough value to hang onto. I think they did it. Sheldon wasn’t flashy. But he was solid.

by SavageBeast on Jul 20, 2008 7:12 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

He also didn't need to be anything else

The Kings have enough potential stars. They also need effective role players to play around those stars. Shelden Williams is physical enough, big enough, and talented enough to play 20-30 mins if needed a night as a backup in the NBA. That’s not bad value over the long haul for MIke Bibby. (I think one reason the Kings got blown out vs the Summer League Mavs was that they were missing some physical presence. That wasn’t the only reason they lost, but they didn’t have a guy they thought could do some smash mouth type stuff. Shelden helped with that.)

Well

Shelden has gone unnoticed because its his third summer league in the NBA. The fact that he isn’t as good as either Hawes or Thompson is kind of concerning, considering he has so much more NBA experience.

by dmj on Jul 20, 2008 7:13 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Shelden

He could be our Reggie Evans or Eduardo Najera. Love having a guy like that on the squad.

Here's the final stat averages for the summer league

Kings Averages...

Hawes – 33.5 mins, 15.8 ppg, .350FG%, 9.0 rpg, 2.0 blks, 4.75 TO

Thompson – 27.5 mins, 15.0 ppg, .529FG%, 8.5 rpg, 0.8 blks, 4.0 TO

Williams – 27.0 mins, 12.3 ppg, .542FG%, 8.7 rpg, 1.0 blks, 3.33 TO

I wouldn’t say Williams is that much worse than Hawes/Thompson. I’d say he’s almost on par. But I think the thing that makes Williams stand out is that he’s huge, while Hawes and Thompson are a bit on the skinny side. If Thompson can bulk up and maintain his fast foot speed. All I can say is “Amare Stoudemire.”

by CloudyEyes on Jul 20, 2008 7:25 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

one major point

Hawes and Williams have been there before, I was pleased with JT’s performance he will work on improving before the pre season and when the veteran guards are on the floor he will look to hit cutters and pass to the open man I am encouraged by his start.

by CloudyEyes on Jul 20, 2008 7:10 PM PDT   0 recs

Yep

He has speed. But he hasn’t yet realized that what worked in college doesn’t work at this level. I think he’ll get there though. He has some nice speed and footwork.

What are the odds that PE2 doesn't make the roster?

Did he score zero points in summer league? That usually doesn’t get you a big boy’s contract.

by Travis Mays Hayes on Jul 21, 2008 5:53 AM PDT   0 recs

I think it totally depends on what trade

we make if any. We currently have 14 players if you include Sean. So unless we do a two for one trade, I don’t think we’d keep him around. No reason to carry 15.

Sean Singletary

It is impossible to judge how a player will do based on Summer League, but the kid looks overmatched even playing against other youngsters. He’d be a good No. 2 point guard in a tanker’s mentality, but the I think the Kings need to find a good combo guard as a backup sixth man. I think you can pencil Sean in for 3-5 minutes a game, but 15 is going to be a stretch. I would love to be proven wrong.

by coolcatreportdotcom on Jul 21, 2008 6:25 AM PDT   0 recs

Good Points All Around

I agree that the Kings will need to lose some roster mass via trade for Ewing to have a chance to stick. I don’t put much stock in his summer performance since he was battling a thigh injury.

CC, I don’t see the Kings signing a combo guard since (a) they are at near luxury tax levels and (b) Theus is OK with Garcia in that role. Besides, who’s out there via free agency that would be a significant upgrade? I suppose it could happen via trade, but please not Jason Terry and his three year, $28 million contract.

SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!

by section214 on Jul 21, 2008 7:28 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Agreed

If we can come up with another true PG backup, that would be a different story. But the whole point of a combo guard is to backup your 2 as well as your 1. Garcia and Douby would both have to be considered combo guards in that Garcia can handle the ball well for a big guy, and Douby’s primary strength is shooting, not distributing. I didn’t see Singletary as overmatched at all though. In fact he has speed to spare and played pretty decent D for a rook. His shooting was crap, but with Udrih and Garcia, I don’t mind SS coming off the bench.

I think Ewing may be a D league player. Because of his name he would be a draw there.

Unless there is a significant shake-up

Due to an Artest trade, I also think the team is going to use Garcia as the sixth man and Douby to keep the scoring going while the starters rest (along with Cisco of course). As I think Theus has realized – just score Q, score. The rest will take care of itself one way or another.

I’m actually not discouraged by a second line of Garcia, Douby, Williams, Thompson and Hawes, that is, if one of the Thompson/williams/Hawes doesn’t end up starting at PF due to some MM move. I wouldn’t doubt that is in the cards by the way.

I think MM might be worth something to someone(?) as a veteran presence off the bench. That $3.3 mil trade exemption Orlando is about to get in the Dooling trade (it can be used again or not?) looks attractive, and Orlando could make good use of MM. They also have a few small pieces that could make the deal work. There might be a deal there even without the TE.

I actually think the Kings should just decide in training camp to start either SWilliams or Thompson, throw them into the fire, have MM start those five games at Center with liberal minutes (maybe the majority) for Hawes.

Its a puzzle with all those PFs now, (heck, not counting SAR or K-9) but I’d like to see Thompson and SWilliams basically get all the PF minutes for a while, see what they can do with real minutes in real games.
