haha
that’s the scary part… candace can woop me silly, and Shelden looked monstruous in summer league. I’m pretty sure no one will call him a Mrs. within earshot, let alone to his face.

You wish Candace would whoop you silly!
I agree that Shelden looked like he’s been working out again.
Plus, if you base it on income, rather than fame, she’s definitely the future Mrs. Shelden Williams and they appear to be a very loving couple. Please God, I do not want to learn about anymore three-ways gone bad this coming year, OK? Is it a deal?

I just think it’s stupid myself. Sad, but not totally unreasonable. After all, aren’t women competitive too?

Heaven's no!
We’re just delicate little flowers without a vicious bone in our bodies or any kind of smelly competitive streak. You know, we’re pretty helpless.
Just ask any married guy if agrees with me. If he’s smart, he will. If he’s not, he’s going to spend a lot of nights trying to stay awake and alert.
Kidding, of course. But I think women are even more competitive than men, generally speaking. There are, of course, exceptions to every rule.
As for the league, sure the “brawl” was overplayed, but what I hold in contempt are polls like this one on the Bee’s website:
Was the Sparks-Shock brawl good for the WNBA?
A. Yes, it displayed the league’s toughness. 50% 7 votes
B. No, it’s just what the league didn’t need. 43% 6 votes
C. Not sure. 7% 1 votes
Total: 14 votes
So, the media/WNBA fans need fighting to prove the WNBA players are passionate about playing and winning their games? That’s asinine.
Thank God the NBA doesn’t need that or we’d spend 14+ hours watching one game and the team sizes would have to rival NFL team sizes! And the 73d ejected player from tonight’s game is the Kings 16th round draft pick from Estonia, Chagrib Mustjinick.

I think the biggest problem KK for the women in the WNBA
Is that it’s a “business”, and it was subsidized. Now that’s it’s not it should be interesting to see how things work out. Another problem I have is that we’re talking about the WNBA here. No toughness was shown. Toughness is playng through injury 3 or 4 times in a season. (Both women and men have done that.) Toughness is having a kid and playing professional basketball several months later after giving birth. (Hello, Cheryl Swoopes.) The idea that the brawl changed the substance of the WNBA is a dumb one.
However, other than the business aspect of the WNBA, is that men just can’t accept women playing professional basketball. Or at least they haven’t done so very much with regards to the WNBA. is it sad? Yes, it is. Comments like Douby Smoker I think were unfortunate, but represented what some substantial part of the masses already think. A bunch of dykes trying to be men. So with this brawl it brings those types of morons out of the woodwork. Is it a shame Ms. KK? Yes, it surely is. Do I watch the WNBA? No, but I don’t watch CSI either. (I watch NCIS though.) Sadly I think it’s a reflection of how scared some people are of a women’s athletic league, and that unfortunately, goes with a stupid racist bigoted society that is America.

The irony is that
Women’s College basketball is pretty popular.
I find it interesting that you mention specifically that “men can’t accept women playing professional basketball.”
I’ve always wondered where the disconnect was between women’s college hoops and the WNBA . . . but I know that I strongly prefer the former to the latter. The WNBA even seems as though it was designed to have a similar Men’s & Women’s cohesion in cities (the same way that Universities have Men’s and Women’s teams represent them), but it just didn’t have the same result.
I choose not to watch the WNBA, but have no problem with those who do. My only problem has been how the NBA has tried to force-feed me a product I am not interested in. Well, that and the fact that I couldn’t listen to talk radio during my evening commute when WNBA games were on.
by smgmatt on Jul 24, 2008 8:04 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well
Those are 2 different issue’s (being force fed the WNBA), and not being able to listen to Peachosaurus Rex on the way home. The former is all David Stern, and his wonderful marketing strategy, and the 2nd is totally on Mike Remy, the sports director for 1140.
As far as the WNBA stuff I ignore it because I don’t really watch it. I don’t watch women’s college hoops anymore than I watch women’s pro hoops. I don’t find either anymore interesting than the either, but that being said I don’t find either appalling either. I think one reason college women’s hoops has garnered greater attention is because it’s been around longer. Women at the college level aren’t doing it for money, but for the love of the game, and for the university, and blah fucking blah. That’s why I think more people stand college sports. Me? I think it’s all bullshit. Either watch the games, or don’t, but don’t spend time blabbering on about how the WNBA is marketed (personal opinion—not a direct opinion of you smg) if you want to watch the games. Ignore it like alot of things. Again, just my opinion.

Agreed
I agree with pretty much all of that.
The “force-fed” comment had to do with the fact that while I chose not to watch/listen to the WNBA, their promos would be thrown into just about every NBA TV broadcast, even though they didn’t have the kind of money it would take for such a marketing blitz.
The KHTK stuff is just because there’s a local team, and while I understand it, I found it annoying (just as I would have found something else I wasn’t interested in pre-empting normal programming).
One thing I wanted to clarify, though, is that I didn’t actually miss hearing Grant; he was just slightly less annoying than the Bay Area commercials, which is why I’d switch over from KNBR.

I just...
...think this was overblown. “Brawls” like this happen all the time in the NBA, NCAA hoops and other sports. The pub it is getting kind of just sounds like the hype machine trying to generate some interest in a league that has failed year in and year out for over a decade.

So they are women?
Big deal. I don’t really differentiate between competitive women and men. They both have the same emotions and cheap shots/fouls during games. They are human and will react accordingly.

Right
That’s why it happens all the time eh? Oh, wait…
Look, I’m not saying a fight in a WNBA game is some kind of societal landmark, but to dismiss it as unimportant because it happens all the time in men’s sports makes no sense.
If it was a NBA, MLB, NFL or NHL fight, I’d be pretty uninterested. I was a bit shocked last night to see it coming from the WNBA. Lisa Leslie’s interview afterwards really struck me – she seemed genuinely distraught for the black eye it puts on her league.

So...
...did you see the Danica Patrick-Milka Duno dust-up just a few days ago?
Fights in women’s sports do happen and I never said that they don’t. By “other sports” in my original post I was not limiting it to the male side of athletics.
I was making a commentary on how this minor clash is being perpetuated by the media in order to publicize the WNBA. A league that is in desperate need of any kind of media attention.
by Red Reign on Jul 23, 2008 2:11 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sure
I don’t necessarily disagree that it’s being overhyped, especially on ESPN. But I also think a fight in a women’s professional sport is extremely rare, and thus noteworthy (regardless of the WNBA’s need for publicity).

Oh
And I saw the tape of the Danica-Milka thing – that was barely more than a heated disagreement. What happened in that WNBA game was much, much more severe.

Granted...
...but the WNBA fight wouldn’t even register as a highlight on ESPN if it was in the NBA.
Also have to remember that the WNBA is the minor leagues of women’s basketball. It is a summer job for these women.
by Red Reign on Jul 23, 2008 2:23 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I disagree
the WNBA fight wouldn’t even register as a highlight on ESPN if it was in the NBA.
If a fight in the NBA happened and a coach pushed a player to the ground, another player injured their knee holding back a teammate and there was lots of crying afterward. I think it’d get plenty of media coverage.

I think it's bad because any minor skirmish will automatically be referred to this brawl
Or whatever you want to call it. The women’s game isn’t the men’s game. Competitive people are competitive people, and right or wrong, this will wrongly plagiarize the women’s game for far too long regardless of the amount of attention the WNBA receives from it.

We can...
....disagree on it for sure since it is only a matter of perception. However, I just don’t see how this wasn’t one of the softest in-game fights to get attention in the media.
And forgive me if I don’t care about the crying and wailing and gnashing of teeth afterward.
by Red Reign on Jul 23, 2008 2:39 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
My post was mostly in jest
Picture someone like Rick Adelman pushing Dwight Howard to the ground, and Howard crying after. Then Yao blows out a knee holding McGrady back.
I think that would get some air time.

Gotcha...
...but there’s no way you can compare those parties from the NBA to the parties from the WNBA in last night’s incident.
And the whole knee thing is really kind of funny to me. I mean, it’s not funny she got hurt at all, but if you watch the clip she wasn’t really doing anything that great. It was about the same stress she would put on it from pushing her lawnmower around her yard.
by Red Reign on Jul 23, 2008 3:02 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
You can't always tell
the severity of an injury by watching it happen. My sister and I were playing on a basketball team together and I saw her get shoved and fall. It didn’t look like anything, but it tore all the ligiments in her ankle and she had to have surgery the next day.
As far as the whole issue of a WNBA brawl, I don’t think gender matters as far as professional athletes go. Anyone who works hard enough and long enough to be a professional or Olympic athlete is a type-A personality, and emotions run pretty high at that level.
My problem is with the coach shoving a player. I hope they suspend him longer than anyone else involved.
