Pisses me off

Unbelievable. I’m sending Geoff Petrie a dictionary that has one word repeated 100,000 times: PROACTIVE. You don’t sit around waiting for teams to call. You work the damn phones until you’ve rid yourself of The Problem. I’ve tried to give Petrie the benefit of the doubt, but I just can’t shake the idea that he’s paralyzed into doing nothing. Absolutely pathetic.

by Carl on Jul 23, 2008 9:26 AM PDT reply actions

Proactive?

Proactivity is a good friend of desperation. It’s not how you get the most back in a deal. See Carter, Vince.

Reaction

We can be reactive instead of proactive. Being reactive is far different than being passive.

It's been over 2 years

That Petrie has been reactive – waiting for someone to call and take The Problem off his hands. Maybe it’s time to try something different.

How do we know Petrie hasn’t been working the phones? He is notoriously quiet. It is very rare that you hear what Petrie is planning before it actually happens.

Isn't PROACTIVE that shit that P-diddy sells on info-mercials.

Your lack of patience or faith is alarming. Relax Carl, have a drink, maybe think about joining GP on vacation because God knows that guy could use a break. It’s July, camp opens in what, 2 months.

It's Sean Jean now

He changed it to Diddy a few years ago.

He told the press he was changing his name because the P was coming between him and his fans.

Now he’s changed it to Sean Jean because “that’s where he is now.”

And that, my friends, is your useless celebrity trivia for the day.

Much ado about nothing?

Every executive that works in my company spends a good portion of their vacation time actually working…whether that is conference calls or checking the Blackberry.

I believe their families understand that it’s the tradeoff they make to have a pretty damn good style of living.

True.

I have a picture of SB with our second youngest (then about 3) on his shoulders walking down a street in Fort Bragg. SB has his phone up to his ear, the three-year-old has a toy cellphone up to his ear.

We were on vacation at a cabin in the woods up the mountains and drove into Fort Bragg that day to go to the beach and because his Blackberry had no reception where we were.

His vacation days are never vacation days unless he leaves his “electronic leash” off. Somebody always has a crisis.

Only point I would make

is that Detroit doesn’t seem to be the best swapping partner. If Petrie’s goal is to get Thomas off the books, then Detroit won’t go for that goal. Practivity won’t do a damn thing to get the money conscious Pistons interested in that type of deal. That is unless Amick mis-represented what he heard. Which I highly doubt.

Why would the KIngs want to take extra salary just to swap Artest for Prince? Part of moving Artest is including moving Kenny Thomas. That’s why I don’t see Detroit doing this deal. Because they probably want less part of Kenny Thomas than we do.

Officially on hiatus

I know I posted the thread, but I’ve got to walk away from it now. I’ve wanted Artest traded for the two-plus years that he’s been here, and Petrie has sat and sat and sat and the team has gone nowhere.

Artest is practically jumping up and down outside Petrie’s office demanding to be traded and Geoff is still waiting for other teams to call. The handwriting on the wall is as big as a billboard, and apparently Petrie still can’t see it. I’ve absolutely had it with Petrie, so I need to walk away from the whole thing for a while. I’ll be back when Artest is no longer a King.

Ridiculous

Apparently Joe Dumars is tired of fans thinking he is sitting on his hands. Our GM? He’s going on vacation. I find it hard to believe Geoff can’t find a deal for Ron. I came to the conclusion right after the Beno signing that we have our lineup of the future already under contract except the small forward spot.

PG – Beno
SG – K-Mart
SF – ?
PF – Thompson
C – Hawes

We also have two guys on the bench, John Salmons and Francisco Garcia, who are more than capable at the small forward spot. So, after all that is considered, who are we going to trade for that is going to end up being a key player? At this point I would just like to see us dump the salary and see what our young guys can do. The worst that could happen is us ending up with a top 6 pick. I would rather suffer through a horrible season than watch us play another medicore season and end up with another pick in the 10-14 range and do absolutely nothing during the offseason.

by blako on Jul 23, 2008 11:54 AM PDT reply actions

Nice post

But unfortunately it reads like a cut and paste of just about every post on here since the beginning of July. Let’s tank, play the kids, get a top draft pick, dump Artest for Wally or some other zero, etc. etc. etc.. Meanwhile Petrie, for some odd reason, is totally ignoring the core of the 2-3 dozen bloggers here, much to their amazement. And now the guy actually has the nerve to go on vacation!

by coolcatreportdotcom on Jul 23, 2008 10:54 PM PDT up reply actions

i find this all just unbelievably ridiculous

this is the one and only characteristic i’ve ever noticed in carl: a belief that geoff petrie is constantly on vacation. of course i don’t want to sound vindictive or anything, but with all due respect, what the hell does he know about the day-to-day running of a franchise? just because we haven’t had some sort of fire sale and sold ron artest at 30 cents on the dollar certainly does NOT mean the man is not doing his job. i’d venture a guess that the personnel stories in the NBA that reach the eyes of fans, whether through mainstream media, blogs, or hearsay, represent less than 5% of the discussions that take place between team bigwigs.

now, if you want to talk in sane, calm terms about how geoff petrie is failing at his job, i’d be willing to listen. i’d disagree, of course, but i’d be willing to listen. in this case, i’m not. i think it is incredibly melodramatic and dumb.

by beevenator on Jul 23, 2008 1:29 PM PDT reply actions

I agree with this

Although I do also understand Carl’s frustrations. Petrie does come off as being passive – now that could be complete b.s. and just our perception from the outside, but seeing things like Petrie’s insistence on not contacting players/agents during the one-week moratorium (while most every other GM was burning up the phone lines), or his seeming reluctance to deal a player unless he’s getting absolutely fair value – well, it makes you wonder.

However, I also get the feeling that Petrie feeds a lot of misinformation to the media about what he’s doing and who he’s talking to. And I agree with you that we probably know less than 5% of the discussions that are actually occurring.

And hell, it’s July. Petrie has plenty of time to deal Artest before the season starts. I want to see Artest out of here as much as anyone, but we’ve waited this long, so what’s the big deal with a few more weeks/months?

Kevin Pritchard has Chuck Norris tied up in the trunk of his car.

by otis29 on Jul 23, 2008 1:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Part of it...

...I think is how Petrie introduced himself to us. Not long at all after he arrived we had massive deals that resulted in us getting Webber, Divac, and J-Will. Then nearly each year after that we had a deal that involved a player who at the very worst became an important part of the team for a year and in some cases (Christie / Bibby) became cornerstones of our championship run.

Geoff is, in many ways, a victim of his own success.

Geoff Petrie was with the Kings since 1994

From 1994-98 did you think he was an idiot then? Or slow paced? Or whatever you thought? I mean the guy inheritated crap, and it turned awhile to turn into a roster he could move and get asset’s in return. Now that the championship run is over he has to be patient once again. (I’m not against the patient part of any of this. I’m just tired of Artest being here. I don’t see how going on vacation for a week in late July makes a difference on whether an Artest trade gets done or not though.)

I should add this.

Just for the sake of clarification, I don’t think 6-7 years is an unreasonable amount of time to transition a team from perennial doormat to contender. Especially in a small market like Sactown. That’s what I meant by saying he turned it around relatively quickly in his tenure with us.

Just wanted to make sure my post wasn’t coming across as hating on Petrie since you seemed to imply that’s how you interpreted it.

PS: In 1994 I was 11 years old.

It’s no biggie JC. I wasn’t hating or anything like that, but your statement did seem to suggest you thought Petrie had been with the Kings a short term when he hadn’t.

I agree, Otis

Methinks you’re right, and young Amick is probably only so happy to run with latest spiel Petrie is feeding him. Meanwhile, while Amick is publishing these great “scoops,” Petrie’s out scouting Bobby Brown (who?) and planning his vacation. Great stuff.

by coolcatreportdotcom on Jul 23, 2008 10:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Yep

Although I’d keep Artest all year or ‘till the deadline unless there was Really something in it for us, a prospect, a pick, losing K-9.

I think thats what Petrie thinks as well.(?)

Why get your panties into a wad?

Let Petrie enjoy his vacation. This deal won’t get done real soon any way. It’s not like people are filling up Jeff’s voicemail asking for Ron. It’s all part of Petrie’s poker face. You can’t tip your hand in negotiations like this. Besides, even if Artest stays so what. He’s still one of the best SF in the league. The guy can drive and score on anybody one on one. His D is in the tops of the league too.
