Houston Chronicle reporting Artest traded to Rockets.

From section214 - OK, I'm moving this post to the front page because it was the first fanpost on the topic and I like jjham the best. The deal is Artest to Houston for Donte Greene, Bobby Jackson, and a future 1st round draft pick, likely 2009. Quick break down - B-Jax is in the last year of his contract and will make almost $7 million to back up Udrih and provide a veteran presence. Greene, at 19 is a project, but he did drop 40 in a summer league game. In essence, Petrie eschewed Denver's offer of a 1st round draft pick and expiring for Artest at the last trade deadline, and the reward was an additional 1st round pick and a back up point guard for this year. Houston reunites Artest with the Adelman, who can ponder closing games with T-Mac at the point, Battier at the 2, Artest at the 3, Scola at the 4 and Yao at center. Yikes, a healthy Houston team could be pretty good. Oh, and the deal can't become official until 8/14, the first day that Greene can be traded. Commence with JJham's original post...

The deal looks a bit shaky but its currently being reported on local news station here in Sacramento and on the Chronicles website. The deal is allegedly Bobby Jackson, a first round pick and an unknown player. There is speculation that the other player is the Rockets first round pick Donte Green from this years draft who cannot be traded until August 14. I don't buy, this deal doesn't make sense on a variety of points but who knows, maybe Petrie just wanted it all to be over with.

All this is is a regurgitation of what the Houston Chron said

Until more details emerge I’m not inclined to say this deal has gone down. Worth monitoring though.

Probably will be nothing but

speculation until the 14th. Assuming GP couldn’t get anyone to bite on taking K9. I like this deal. BJax is expiring and gives us a veteran backup at the point, and we get a young talent and a number one pick. I think that’s pretty good.

But as Pookey mentioned elsewhere we’d probably go over the tax unless we send along a Douby or something. Which makes the Bulls rumor seem more plausible(saves us a mil or so).

No Kfan

What I said is that it’s probably a given that the Kings won’t keep Singeltary or Ewing Jr as it will save them nearly 900 K in salary.

So this gets possibly gets a deal done...

But Stackhouse and Brandon Bass wasn’t in the realm of possibility? I can’t imagine Cuban would have let a draft pick get in the way of wrapping this deal up…

With Stackhouse and Jackson both expiring, I guess it’s a matter of opinion whether you like Greene or Bass better, but given Sacramento’s situation with all their perimeter players, why would you rather have Donte Greene?

Can’t say this makes much sense, at all.

Don't think Dallas

Maybe

Guess Geoff Petrie didn’t think so, or Dallas didn’t want to take on K9.

Donte Green Included

Sam Amick is saying the Kings will get Bobby Jackson, Donte Green, a 1st, and Cash considerations. I guess we’re just stuck with K-9 until next year’s trading deadline.

Hoopsworld Just Posted The Information
According to published reports the Rockets will send Bobby Jackson, Donte Greene, a first round pick in the 2009 NBA draft, and cash amounting to around $1 million to the Kings for the storied forward. If Greene is, indeed, involved in the deal then it won’t be able to officially take place until August 14th.

Salmons, Cisco, Greene, or maybe Thompson?

by #12Pick...who? on Jul 29, 2008 6:31 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Probably not Thompson

Since there is so much competition at SF now. But I would say Salmons and Cisco have the inside edge to starting unless one or both is dealt (more likely Salmons).

I'll cover the weekends if you take weekdays

Amazing deal by Petrie! I knew I voted to fire him too early. We get a first round player in Greene (I won’t mention that I have only heard bad things out of him from the Syracuse contingent, as one 40 point summer league game makes up for a season worth of bad press), EVERYBODY’S favorite underpaid player in Bobby J (amazingly making more this year than he ever did when he was on the Kings the first time), AND a first round pick.
Bobby J can be our back up 1, if that doesn’t work out and he is too old, he can at least be a locker room guy that should get a shit ton of respect from guys like El Flaco and K-Mart. Donte Greene could be an exiciting young player, add in last weeks signing of Bobby Brown and the Kings could be battling the Blazers for Western Conference supremecy in the 20Teens (can I copyright this phrase?). Go Go Kings.
Above it all, we FINALLY get rid of Crazy Bill Bill, we get addition by subtraction minutes, shots, and confidence from Kevin Martin/ Cisco/ Johnny Salmons, and were ready to go.
Downside: No more possibility of Dan Dan in summer league. For that I will shed a single tear.

NBA.com: Donte Green Article

via NBA.com

Greene’s 40-point game wasn’t just two points off of Marcus Banks’ Las Vegas summer league record, it was a statement that the 27 teams who passed on him before the Grizzlies took him at No. 28 made a big mistake.

"You have to come out here with the confidence to prove everybody wrong," Greene said. "I did that. I definitely had a lot of fun [doing it]."

Through three games, Greene is averaging 25.3 points on .442 shooting from the field and .385 from deep to go with 4.3 rebounds per game.

by LiquidPolio on Jul 29, 2008 7:25 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Donte has a cap figure of 975k, and with Bobby coming off the books next year, this stil gives us cap versatility later on, especially once Brad is off the books. I am glad GP is picking a direction and stockpiling young talent, and getting to the point where we can add 1-2 great players through free agency.

Koz just mentioned that on his radio show

either that or the Kings became less concerned with getting rid of Kenny’s contract because it might be possible that ‘Reef’s contract could end via medical retirement.

Sad news for ‘Reef personally if there is any basis in fact for Koz’s conjecture.

Also, I felt the need to distinguish the difference between getting rid of Kenny Thomas and getting rid of Kenny Thomas’s contract. I can’t hate a guy for signing an offered contract, and for playing hard whenever he was given the opportunity.

I wish Kenny and ‘Reef the best in the future, wherever that leads them.

This trade makes me feel like...

This trade makes me feel like I was about to eat some delicious popcorn, but there was a drop of hot oil on it, and it burned my tongue. Actually, that’s what literally happened a few minutes ago, but I think it is also a fitting analogy.

If this deal is in fact finalized (I’m going to operate under the assumption that it will be), I’ll be happy that the will-he-won’t-he drama is over. It will allow me delve full-on into my fantasy football obsession. But at the same time, my tongue is burned over what we got back and what we traded (or didn’t trade). Welcome back Bobby Jax, for sure. Was always a good guy to have on the roster, except for his abdomen being the basketball equivalent of Fred Taylor’s groin. Donte Green? Don’t know enough about him to make a solid judgment, so I’ll refrain from doing so. And a future pick. None of this particularly blows my hair back. Someone pointed out that Jackson is an expiring deal. But so was Artest. I’m also very disappointed that we still have Kenny Thomas on the roster.

I often preach that we must take the longer term approach to building the team, and that we must exercise patience. I stand by that sentiment, but I am intrigued to see how this plays into the long term betterment of the Kings. I’m not totally against it, I’m not totally for it. I’m in wait-and-see mode. And that frustrates me. I’d rather have an opinion so I can piss off a bunch of folks arguing it.

However, we all know that I’m an idiot. So if I’ve lukewarm, it was probably the greatest trade Petrie ever pulled off. See the signature if you need any more information.

Never forget: I am a complete idiot

Market Conditions

Ron Artest’s trade value at the deadline was what tunred out to be the #20 pick (wound up being Alexis Ajinca) and expiring contract. His trade value today is the #28 pick (who D.Thorpe has ranked 13), a future 1st round pick and a badly needed backup PG with an expiring contract.

I like it, but I am admittedly pretty far up GP’s arse.

Good deal

The Kings got a young guy with potential, an expiring contract and a first round pick for Artest. That’s a good deal. The fact that the expiring contract is one of my favorite former players (who is admittedly at the end of his career) is gravy.

No cowtowner,

I’m a transplant from the east coast who likes it here and hates the hub transfer in Houston to get back to the east coast. It’s a dirty filthy airport, badly planned, and the humidity level from April through November makes it impossible to step outside to gather a breath of fresh air. .

Plus, my stepfather moved my mother to Houston where she died at 44, so you tell me my hatred of Houston comes from being a west coast elitist. Or even from being a bitchy cowntowner.

Nope,

my dislike (not hatred, I shouldn’t have used that word) of Houston stems from my dislike of Houstonian weather, horrible airport, and their 50+ miles of sprawl. Houston has a lot to offer but it also has a lot of drawbacks.

Given waht has transpired

I don’t know who we could have drafted at 42-43 that would have stuck. The trade, along with the signing of Bobby Brwon added a net of two players to the roster, including two point guards. Bill Walker, Richard Hendrix, DeVon Hardin – I don’t think any of those guys would crack the top 15 on this current roster (considering that ‘Reef and K9(woof!) are in the top 15 by virtue of their guaranteed contracts).

Is kanji the right word?

For Korean written language?

If you weren’t born and raised in this language, I am suitably impressed with your facilty. If you were raised in the language, I’m even more impressed with your english facility.

I have tried to learn to speak Cantonese and it’s hopeless..or I am. Asian languages and their written languages must be the most difficult in the world to master.

So, do you know the right characters for “noodle” so that section and I can continue to annoy pookey?

If you could include “pudding” that would be awesome.

The word

for Korean it is Hangul. Kanji sounds Japanese and there’s no way they’d use the Japanese word here.

Many Korean words are of Chinese origin, but the written language is not. It was “scientifically” created by King Sejong in the 1400s to help poor Koreans learn to read. It’s actually really easy to learn to read Korean. I don’t really speak Korean(too little vocabulary), but I can read it no problem.

I don’t know noodle or pudding. I’ll ask at work today.

Who says sports sites aren't educational?

Thanks, appreciate the noodle and pudding question.

By kanji, I was referring to the written language/characters, I just didn’t know what the right word was to describe the written language. I could be wrong, but I thought Chinese written languages were called (at least in the West) kanji.

I get the lack of love for the Japanese in Korea and China but I don’t want to continue the discussion here.

Good to know that the spoken language is Hangul. I love learning new things

I'll take this one Kfan...

In chinese the written language (characters) is called “hanzi”, while the spoken language of mandarin is called “putong hua”, of course, I just wrote that using our alphabet, which when writing chinese with our alphabet its called “pingying”. Ok, enough of that.

The written language

is Hangul. Probably not called Kanji because it was created separately and has individual letters.

Unlike Chinese where each picture is a word and Japanese where each picture is a syllable(as I understand them). In Hangul each character is a letter and these letters are combined to make syllables. Each “block” is a syllable.

So 국수 is two syllables made up of 5 characters. ㄱis between a ‘G’ and a ‘K’. ㅜ is a long ‘U’ and ㅅ is an ‘S’.

So it sounds like “Gook-Soo”. I asked at work and 국수 means hand made noodles. You could also use 라면 for noodles. Sounds like “La-Myon”. We know it as Ramen. Pudding is 푸딩 sounds like “Poo-Ding”.

There you go, more information about Hangul than you’d ever want to know.

First (and probably last) thoughts

1. It’s a long way to the 14th.
2. I’d say a big factor is whether Houston is ready to commit to a deal beyond this season for Ron, or else he may kill the deal. I have to assume that’s part of the deal.
3. Greene is in the same situation vs. Salmons-Garcia that JT is in with Mikki-Sheldon.
4. Adding two guards (for now) in Jackson, probably means Garcia is going to play more at the 3 and possibly back up the 2.
5. Who else from the Kings is going to Houston? Is anyone? I read one quick report that said the numbers don’t add up and we have to send some filler.
6. As I said before, I think some more deals will be put together before the end of the summer.
7. I like getting two No. 1 draft picks. Waiting was worth the wait.
8. Houston just became one of the favorites int he West or certainly took a paper step forward, although …
9. Artest should fit right in with Yao and McGrady as they all have a habit of missing some games.

Out until tomorrow night. You guys have fun with this. :)

by coolcatreportdotcom on Jul 29, 2008 9:57 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

The numbers add up CC

The only problem is that if the KIngs keep everybody signed they would be paying luxury tax. So I imagiine there is some manuevering done to get under that threshold. Other than that I would agree there is a player going to Houston if for nothing else was because it was part of the trade.

Responding

1. Agreed, but I think DoubleRon will like the trade and try really hard to behave between now and then.
2. There won’t be any contract extension at this point. He’s going to have to prove himself. I think he knows that.
3. Agreed, but Greene’s development may lead to one of them being moved at some point.
4. Yep.
5. Douby would seem to be the best candidate.
6. I don’t think so, but would be happy to be wrong. The Kings don’t have the roster spots to take on too many more players.
7. Yep.
8. I think Houston jumps into the top four or five teams, but I wouldn’t put them above the Lakers at this point.
9. Agreed. I’m glad it’s someone else’s soap opera now.

I think it could go the other way – move some spare pieces like Salmons, etc. and maybe the pick we just got for (gulp) another slightly more established player who won’t be 29 before Christmas.

Your assist numbers look right

But your shots per 48 are off because you used their shots per game instead.

Artest: 21.3 shots per 48.
Salmons: 15.3 shots per game.

Of course, you have to remember there are two John Salmons.

John Salmons the Starter

and John Salmons the shrinking violet who moans and complains when he comes off the bench.

It would probably be useful to compare both John Salmons and lean more on the starter numbers if that’s what you project him to be.

Salmons the Starter

Chucked it up 17.1 times per 48 minutes when starting, almost two shots more per 48 than his average. Since he started 41 games and came off the bench for 41, his non-starting numbers are probably about 13-plus shots per 48.

In any case, less than Ron, but who will take Ron’s shots now? It should be Kevin, but dribble, dribble, dribble. ... we’ll see.

In Any Case

It could be a moot point.

Petrie might not be done, and it doesn’t look like Salmons has a spot in this future lineup.

Bottom Line: If Petrie, in making the Artest trade, has moved into total rebuilding mode, do you really want Salmons taking minutes away from Cisco and Greene just to get a few extra wins?

I’d like to see this at the 1-2-3:
  • 1: Beno 30-35, Brown eventually taking over for BJax and getting most of the rest. Cisco in reserve if needed.
  • 2: Martin 35-40, Douby the rest. Again, Cisco could also back up this spot.
  • 3: Cisco 28-32, Greene most of the rest.

I think Cisco and Salmons are pretty equal as basketball players. They’re not the same type of players, but they’re equally effective as starters. (Check their numbers as starters last season). That being the case, if Salmons is better starting and Cisco has proven he’s effective off the bench, you start Salmons.

I think he needs to prove himself this coming season

He should be the starter at the 3. He has proven in the past that as a starter he is a good player. Even on D, I remember him locking some people up in some games last year. Cisco will back him up and play the perfect 6th man role. As for Donte Green, I know he went nuts in Summer League, but he left Syracuse after only one year. He probably needs some seasoning so he may not be ready to contribute right away. He could turn into a K-Mart type of player where he has to take the growing pains of being a rookie and then take advantage of the opportunity when it presents itself.

I'm not sure

I agree with you. The Rockets might want to try him out for a season, before deciding if he fits in well enough to sign long term. If they sign a deal now and he doesn’t work out, they’d be screwed.

Nope

It just seems like a little thing now that could become a big thing before the 14th. Just sayin’.

CC I think you had a valid point except for this

Artest has no real posturing power like Garnett did before he went to Boston. Artest has to play himself into the type of money he wants, and Garnett already earned it. Or at least most people felt he did.

Now, I doubt that’s the type of thing that will kill this deal between now & the 14th. It is your right, of course, to disagree.

I see your point

But I don’t really believe Petrie would allow this to be announced if the deal wasn’t finalized with the sole exeption of Donte Green to be included in the deal.

To be blunt CC, Petrie thinks there is a deal. Morey thinks there is a deal. Artest said he would want to be traded when the Kings didn’t resign him. So, now that has been accomplished. Why would Artest demand the Rockets to pay him when they don’t have to?
