And the 2011 NBA Champions are...

The Cavaliers.

There are so many things I find grossly entertaining about the NBA outside of watching the games, and shouting in my half-drunken stupor everytime a bad call is made, or a great alley-oop, an amazing block, or other things we all similarly shout about.

Beyond these things though, my passion in life happens to be money, I am a double major in Finance and Accounting, which of course leads me to often speculate, critique, and out-rate despise certain contracts that are made or lack there of in other cases.  However, the looming question over nearly every GM in the league is how do I make space for the summer of 2010, and how do I put myself above the rest the negotiation for services from the likes of Wade, James, Bosh, among other amazing talents who will become available.

I was looking through hoops-hype earlier, I know they aren't the most up to date on salaries but I found this incredibly interesting.  There was only one contract on the books for the Cavaliers in 2010/2011.  Any guesses? That's right, it's Lebron James' player option. Think he knows this already? He's always been a smart guy, and he understands business as well as most people, and better than any NBA player I can think of. Wouldn't you know every summer he's on the Team USA roster with other top players, many of whom will be free-agents the same time as him! Everyone talks about James going to the Nets to work for his buddy Jay-Z, or New York to be on grand stage of MSG, but lets really think about this.

The King is playing along-side the top players in the country, for the greatest glory of all, world championships, olympic medals, an honor that any athlete or fan of appreciates with the utmost respect. How could James not capitalize on this opportunity to plant a couple seeds, fully knowing that unless Ferry wants to join the rising unemployment in this country, he'll be talking to the agents of the same people James is playing with and becoming ever closer freinds of. I couldn't tell you who will be on the Cavaliers at the start of the 2010/2011 season, but I can tell you Lebron James will be one of those, along with at least one fellow Olympian. Wade? Bosh? Both? Someone else? I haven't spent too much time researching this yet, but I know there is a market of unprecedented talent that will be available.

Just a footnote though, as I do want to tie this into the kings.  Any player, especially artest that truly wants to play for a ring. You're nothing short of incompetant for seeking out 5-6 year extentions. If I had any dominant sought-after talent, such as maybe... defense? I sure as hell would want to be a free agent for the summer of 2010, and I would be begging at the door-step of whoever pulls off what Boston has done this past year.

So what do you guys think, who will be the next Big 3, centered by King James.

P.S.

I really do wish and pray Geoff could pull off a similar stunt, but the man who will make the biggest impact on who ends up where in a couple of years, will be Lebron James.

Interesting premise

I’m not really sure what to say, other than Larry and Curley are jealous Dkons. But I suppose that’s their right.

James, Bosh and/or Wade and...

Having 2 or even 3 of those guys is fine, but who else would be around them? The problem with having nobody under contract is that Ferry is going to have to fill an entire roster. Sure, there are some top-tier players out there that year, but you also need the supporting cast. Chemistry is more important than talent alone. The thing in Boston worked because the guys on the team were able to get along. I honestly believe this year’s Celtics are a once in a lifetime event. Take the Lakers of a few years back: Shaq, Kobe, Malone, Payton, and a complete and utter lack of chemistry. Close, but no cigar.

I agree that it is an interesting possibility, I just don’t see it actually happening.

I believe

His point is that the chemistry is being formed in the National Team.

And just because there is NOBODY else on the roster in 2010 doesn’t mean that they can’t start picking up cheap role-players before then. It’s more realistic than the GP’s “perceived” 2010 FA plan.

I understand

I know that Bosh, Wade, and James are all going to know each other from Team USA, I was referring more to the role players. I agree they could pick up role players before then, but Ferry hasn’t exactly had the best success rate at bringing in good role players. There’s a reason the team is currently though of as LeBron and nobody else.

I also think it is short-sighted to call GP’s plan unrealistic. We do not know what his plan is. Perhaps it is a terrible plan. Perhaps it is a genius. At this point I don’t think we should be saying that Imaginary-Plan-A is more realistic than Imaginary-Plan-B.

OK

Cleveland has been looking for the Robin to LBJ’s Batman. They’ve got plenty of role-players, but no quality 2nd Banana to keep teams honest. That’s why the Cavs go as LeBron goes. In this scenario they wouldn’t even need to find a 3rd Banana, just specialized players (who want rings) to fill in the blanks.

I have no idea what GP’s plan is, and I have faith/trust in him. What I was referring to was the “perceived” plan that everyone constantly references based on a few (one?) quotes from GP himself about the 2010 off-season.

And let’s be honest, all we ever do here is debate the merits of whether:

Imaginary-Plan-A is more realistic than Imaginary-Plan-B

Isn’t that why we’re here in July?

Yes and No

I agree that Lebron is probably using his Team USA experience to make relationships that might enable him to recruit guys for Team LBJ in 2010, but I don’t think the Cavaliers’ cap space that year will necessarily be enough to keep him there. The vacant payroll is emblematic of Cleveland’s organizational inability to get Lebron quality help. I know they made the Finals and E.C. Finals in successive years, but I think we’d all agree that every Cav not named Lebron on each of those teams was/is expendable. I don’t think that the Cavs and Nets will be the only teams in the league that leaving cap room open for 2010. If I were Lebron, I would look for a big market team with young talent on rookie contracts and cap space. Then I would sign with that team and ask my buddies from the 2008 Gold Medal team, “who wants to take a pay cut and win a bunch of Championships?” (probably not Wade) If the Cavs continue to be unable to put talent around Lebron, they will only be able to offer cap space and I don’t think that will be attractive enough in the 2010 free agent market.

Home

It’s also his home state. That doesn’t mean he’s a lock to stay, but it’s a factor.

It’s not like he’s been hurting for endorsements during his time there, either.
