WHY RESIGN BENO?
Can anyone provide me with any evidence that supports Sacramento's decision to resign Beno Udrih as our primary point guard?
When, at any point this season or at any point in his career, has he exemplified leadership, a quality it takes to LEAD a team? I'm not talking about slashing to the basket and doing it yourself, having a few standout games. That might work some nights, but I'm talking about communicating, assisting, encouraging, involving...TEAMWORK...He's NOT a team player.
How many assists per game (as a true point guard/"leader" should involve his teammates)?
Did we see one lob this year from Beno?
How many times have you seen him kick it out on a drive?
(Got EVERY game this season on DVD, will take references:)~
How many turnovers, dribbles off the foot, out of control drives to the basket did we see this season?
He had a few standout games, true indeed. But, this is the NBA. Most players do or very well should once they're given an opportunity (especially after sitting at home for a while).
And lastly, he "sat down" on the team at the end of the season. He went to Club Med with Ron (on the bench) and waited for his agent to call. Now that's exactly the kind of guy we need. A real team player. A leader.....
Am I missing something?

Playing the devil's advocate here
1 – Beno is essentially playing out his rookie year here, since he had absolutely no shot at playing time under the Spurs’ roster. Throw in the fact that Beno missed out training camp and had to run the team under the gun, without any real feel for the players, I’d say he did a pretty good job.
2 – Beno is still young, so there is a real possibility that Beno will improve his numbers, especially after being able to play with the team at full strength at the start of the season. There might even be a possibility that Beno might be the next Steve Nash, since their games are almost identical. Nash also did much much worse, his first 4 seasons in the NBA, than Beno is doing now.
3 – The PG market is completely drained right now. Who’d you want to start at PG? Singletary? Douby? Or sign a free agent PG (best PG available here is probably Earl Boykins) to a larger contract, since they know their stock has risen, due to the demand over PGs?

Well stated.
Seriously, TPWG, (can I call you TPWG?) who were you going to get who was cheaper and/or better?
I think you need to go back and watch a few games. Beno drove and dished more than you give him credit for. And I think I recall a couple of ally-oop passes to KMart, though I might be mistaken.

the contract is too long
there may not be any point guards this year but what about next or the year after, there was no reason to panic and sign beno to the full midlevel exception. We should have waited to see what we can get for artest and possibly miller if he draws any interest. And there was Anthony Johnson who wouldve been cheaper and on a shorter contract and theres always Garcia, Douby, and Singletary to platoon the position for a season.
Beno is not the next Steve Nash

Maybe not the next Nash
But what if he’s 2/3 as good at 1/2 the price for 3x as long (starting today)?
For the record: I was in the 3-year-max camp, but here he is, so let’s hope for the best.

Ooh
Too much math makes my head hurt. :-)
Even having him for five years isn’t a bad thing. There will always be a market for a reasonably priced, reasonably talented point guard.

deal length
If he’s good then having him at the MLE in the later years of this contract will be a steal. If he stays average then he’s probably slightly overpaid, but could also be a nice trade chip with a 7.5 million expiring contract in the 5th year.
It’s too soon to tell if he’s worth this deal, but I don’t think there’s really much risk involved and there’s a whole lot of potential upside.

lob?
Who the hell would Udrih through a lob too? I don’t see too many King’s players playing above the rim even on a fast break.

Honestly, even though I’m not a fan of the five-year deal, I feel much, much happier than if we had Duhon on a three-year deal (which is what he almost signed with Orlando; he took a two-year from NY presumably because it’s NY).
We can reasonably assume Martin and Udrih will each miss less than 17 games. Thus, our backcourt will be improved! No other readily available scenario with ended with that result existed. If our frontcourt improves (more Thompson, less Mikki, better Hawes) and the small forward position doesn’t regress too heavily, we have a team getting better with limited financial obligations past 2010 (Udrih, Martin, Salmons and all the kids and there $2 million salaries). I’m happy with that.

Agreed
I’m much happier with Beno than Duhon, especially after reading this piece from Blog a Bull.

To be fair
Blog a Bull hates Duhon. That’s about the only thing they seem to agree on.

Well it's not the only thing
They don’t like Pax or Reinsdorf much either. Blog A Bull is an angst ridden blog. If you want to laugh spend a day reading it. I guarantee it’s funnier than most situation comedy’s out there anyway.

I tried
I tried reading a thread about who they should trade Hinrich for when they knew they were getting Rose . . . it was dizzying to say the least.

Im not huge on Duhon but
What makes you think Udrih will miss less than 17 games? San Antonio thought he was soft and little has changed.

Personally
I’m hoping that he can bring a Victoria’s Secret supermodel to the table like Marko Jaric.

You ever see pictures of Peja's (now) wife?
Do a Google image search for Aleka Kamila.
I bet she’s a lousy cook.
