If the Bobcats do explore Felton's trade value, they'll find it considerable. Sacramento (before coming to terms with Beno Udrih), Cleveland and New York all were interested.

My support of a five-year deal for Beno was contingent on the exhaustion of other options. The problem, of course, was that to seek Felton meant opening up the very real possibility Beno is no longer there if Felton falls through. Were Beno an RFA, Petrie would have been in a position to delay the Beno process (promising to match) while seeking a cheaper replacement who wouldn’t make fans and/or Kevin Martin rip his fingernails off.

Plus,
The cost of Beno was the five year MLE. Felton would have bought us a year (he will basically be an RFA in 2009) but he would have cost us someone viable (Salmons and a future draft pick?). Is a five year Beno, Salmons and our draft pick > than Felton? Remember, Charlotte does not have to trade Felton, so they won’t fire sale him.

There's a real possibility that everyone will recognize Beno's MLE
ending up being amongst the best deal’s for any player in the entire L. Sure, we all thought 5 years was too much, and we could all end up being wrong. That’s the beautiful part of armchair analysis.

Agreed
I’m skeptical about the length of Beno’s deal, but am open to the possibility that it could end up being a great deal. Beno’s shooting is certainly not in question, and that’s more than we were getting out of Mike Bibby. What the heck happened to Bibby’s shooting stroke anyway?

Yeah, I think you could be right
If you compare Beno and his 5/32mi to Kevin’s 5/55mil. It seems about right.

Five year Beno
Only time will tell if the five year Beno MLE is a benefit rather than a cost. Of the other three MLE deals Petrie has done, how many would you back and do the same way? I might redo the Salmons deal, if he nets us something in trade or ends up starting after Artest is gone.

In defense of Mikki
I don’t think he was brought here to be a starter, because he never had been in his career.
He ended up being a starter by default, when Reef got hurt and K9 landed in the dog house.
Mikki his spent his career being an energy guy off the bench, and a pretty good one. He’s had some pretty good games against the Kings.
If we could get a real starting PF, then Mikki could go back to what he does best. Imagine Mikki, Garcia, Hawes, maybe Singletary all coming off the bench and playing together for stretches. The Bench Mob Reborn.

Douby...
Pretty sad when we have hopes for a 2nd round pick coming off our bench but not Douby. Hopefully he surprises us this year.
by cabz on Jul 8, 2008 11:23 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
I thought about adding Douby to the Bench Mob list, but I just couldn’t do it.
Mostly because I can’t think of one thing he does well and/or consistently. He’s a streaky shooter, poor defender, doesn’t move without the ball, too small to set screens, not a good ball handler or passer.
That said, though, I’d love it if he surprised us and turned into BJax 2.0, or even KMart Lite.

Depends on your view?
I think that all of GP’s MLE deals have paid off, just maybe not in the way that you would have liked them to.
SAR played well before the final(?) injury of his career, and that was a calculated risk (since NJ passed on him). At the time the Kings needed a PF and got a pretty good one.
Salmons has proven that he’s worth $5M per, and possibly more if given the opportunity (e.g. his time starting last season)
Mikki has played well for the Kings, and filled a gaping hole otherwise known as “the 4”. He was also signed specifically as a stop gap, with a 2-year (option for a 3rd) deal. This is the exact same deal that many wanted for Beno, for whatever that’s worth.
Beno has shown that he can play PG in the NBA, and while he may not be the “ideal” guy running the point, he would have been a good pick up had he had his breakout year with someone else and we pried him away (especially considering our current PG situation).
All have been pretty good MLE pickups, although if the hope was a “blow-it-up-and-rebuild” then they hurt those chances by putting a better team on the floor. For me personally, I would rather go back and blow it up earlier, but to say that they’ve been bad signings is missing the purpose of the signings in the first place.

This doesn't really belong here
The longer Artest stays here the longer the Salmons questions remains unanswered and remains pure speculation and opinion on those willing to stroll both sides of the issue. The longer Artest sticks around is the longer this team remains in limbo.
That being said, I agree with you to an extent. At the time I didn’t mind the Reef signing because I thought K9 would provide more production over the rest of the life of the deal than he has. He’s totally dropped off a cliff.
I don’t know how many of them were “pretty good” MLE pickups, but they aren’t the worst example of them out there I believe. I’m sure I can find worse than Mikki Moore though. Mike James anybody?

I'm on the opposite end
I agree that Shareef played well when he was healthy, but as it stands he missed all of last season, and the Nets saw it coming. Bad deal.
You’re right that Mikki is and always will be a bench player, and his deal wasn’t that long. The Kings paid significantly more than the Nets (again!) would have. The team needed to rebuild when Mikki was signed, not add more $5 million players to an under .500 roster. I like Mikki, but this was a bad deal.
The Salmons deal is closer to being good. I think he’s worth the money he’s paid, but I don’t think the Kings have actually gotten $5 million a year in value from him. If Salmons stays a bench player for the rest of his deal, it’s a bad deal. If he turns into a starter, I think he’ll play very well and it will be a decent deal. If he’s traded and the Kings get a decent asset or draft pick(s) for him, it’s a decent deal. I just don’t see giving bench players MLE deals unless you’re a few vets from a championship.

I rather
See Artest get dealt to Charlotte for Morrison and Felton even with Beno. I don’t like Beno as a starting point guard. Morrison is a nice scorer and isn’t afraid to take big shots. Morrison once led the Bobcats to a OT win at San Antonio.
Jerome James, Jared Jeffries and Etan Thomas were by far the best MLE pick ups.

oh shit
once he led his team to a victory? How about he’s an unathletic swingman who would take shots away from our more efficient scorer while playing terrible defense?
by coachtheus on Jul 8, 2008 10:46 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed
Artest may cause us many headaches and a few ulcers, but he’s one hell of a player. I can’t see the logic in trading a guy like that for someone like Morrison who is completely unproven at the NBA level.

Morrison hasn’t been able to get on the court enough since he was drafted for anyone to draw real conclusions about what he’s capable of doing in this league. He put up considerably decent numbers as a rookie, coming off the bench the majority of the time and still averaging 12 pts a game. he’s not athletic enough to dominate, but he definitely has talent. He’s a skilled scorer, it’s not like he’s lost those skills because he’s hurt his knee or ankle or whatever his major injury was last year. He never got by on his athleticism. Anyway, the point is that he’s a pretty nice “throw-in” for this deal. I love the Mustache and the striped socks too. but ya, he’ll still be a poor defender, but there’s still a valuable role he could play on any team IMO

Haha
I was absolutely disgusted by his antics during the Seattle series in the 1st round. The garbage bag stuff is utterly disgusting especially when he wore the garbage bag after defeating the Kings. I’m not mad that he played out of his mind but that garbage bag stuff is just disgusting. It shows what kind of a person he is, nothing but garbage.

Charlotte
Is in an odd place right now at the 1. Unless they believe Felton can shift to the 2, he is a scoring PG (with a horrible FG%), it looks like either he or DJ will get bench duty.
I’m still surprised that they took DJ. Especially with Brown’s (And MJ’s) UNC roots. thay connection is realy strong and I’m sure Brown asked around quite a bit about him upon taking the job.
