Tick, Tick, Tick
Is this like the start of free agency when teams call free agents at midnight the day it begins to make offers? Will GP be trying to make the Artest trade official at 12:01am or do you think he'll set his alarm for the normal time? On a semi-related note, David Thorpe in his chat today said we traded Ron essentially for 2 top-5 picks, Greene would be a top 5 in the upcoming draft and we'll be one of the worst 5 teams in the league this year....

Yes, I noticed we’ve been awfully quiet about “he who shall not be named”. Let’s not jinx it.
I will say, in no way, shape or form do I see the Kings being a bottom 5 team this year.

Well
Last year’s Kings team dealt with a metric f-ton of injuries and still ended up with only the 13th worst record. Will we really drop 8+ spots? Possible I guess, but I just don’t see it.
TZ’s point about a potential Miller trade would definitely change things. Even when he seems to be playing poorly, the team is much better with him on the court.

It could happen, depending on the depth of Petrie’s immediate rebuilding plans. I’m a mark for Shock and Hawes, but trading Miller at this point would basically ensure 45-50 losses. It’s not far - an injury to Martin or Salmons, regression from Beno - from there to bottom 5.
With the current roster and a standard level of injuries and expectations, 35 or so wins seems right. The team could very well hit 38 again. Remember: Reggie will be playing for his NBA coaching life.

Yes, but...
and I think this has been discussed previously, Reggie won’t be coaching for his NBA life from a wins and losses standpoint. It’s absolutely unrealistic to assume this team, with this roster, even with Miller, is going to sniff a playoff berth. I love Martin, but Iverson and Anthony can barely carry a team to an 8th seed. I won’t say the West’s gotten that much tougher, but the parity has unquestionably increased between the haves and have nots. We’re presently a have not, but by design mind you, not by accident or panic. This roster, this season needs to show cohesiveness, competitiveness, composure and chemistry. Those are reasonable requests for a rebuilding team and said team’s coach. If Theus can get this group to display flashes of the above he’ll stay employed, even if we’re front and center for the Ricky Rubio/Blake Griffin sweepstakes.
And what does it matter, we all know no matter where we pick, as long as he’s available, Petrie’s going to draft Stephen Curry anyway.

I really don't want to see Miller traded this year either,
I think he has a lot to prove and a lot left to show on the floor. I guess I feel like I did when Vlade got dumped, there’s too much knowledge left in these guys to just trade/dump them. I still wish the Kings had kept Vlade one more year to coach Miller, I think he’d have been much better as a player if that had happened.

The "two top five picks" makes no sense
While Greene certainly could be a top five pick next year, we are getting the rocket’s pick not our own(probably in the 25-30range). Also like Otis said I really don’t see us being significatly worse without Billy.
I might also add that Jessica Alba is a championship piece, if he thinks Ron is too, more power to him. ;p -Kfan in Korea

Botttom five could definitely happen. I’m sticking by my 30 win prediction, but if our star player were to get hurt, I could easily see it being less than 20. I also don’t expect Miller to come back in the same shape this year. That said, I’m fine with it. Young guys will get minutes, the Kings will get a nice draft pick and they’ll be back in a few years.

without Ron, but with Martin and Beno? A lot of the without Ron games were when Kevin was hurt and the 1st 7 games when we had no PG.

Did a little math myself
Without Beno: 6-10
With Beno: 32-34
Without Brad: 3-7
With Brad: 35-37
Without Kevin: 8-13
With Kevin: 30-31
Clearly, Ron is an important part of the roster, but if this team can sustain a bit better health this season, I’d guess they can again get in the neighborhood of 38 to 40 wins, especially if Spencer improves and JT can absorb some minutes.

About the only thing you can say
Is that this team is better when it’s healthy. :)
With all the injuries the team suffered last season, I think it’s kind of hard to quantify the impact of Ron’s loss by our record with/without him. You’d have to look at the opponent’s involved, the other players who were sidelined, etc.
I think plus/minus numbers are probably the closest you can come to getting a general idea of the impact, but even those are probably flawed with the somewhat small sample size involved.
Theoretically, Salmons should be able to pick up a good portion of Ron’s slack on the offensive end and is a decent defender. What he probably can’t replace is Ron’s ability to single-handedly take over a game for minutes at a time when needed.
There are a lot of ifs for this team – if the squad stays healthy, if Kevin takes over the leadership mantle and makes the leap to superstar (or near-superstar) status, if Spencer improves a bit, if JT is the real deal, if Brad comes back in shape, if Beno can handle a full season as a starting PG in the league, etc.
But it’s hard for me to see the team dropping anywhere from 10 to 15 games due to the loss of Artest. It’s not like there isn’t some potential production replacement on the roster.

Agree
When you consider that most of the games Artest missed he wasn’t the only starter missing from the line-up, the numbers cited by KingsFan are misleading.
It seems like we have a lot more games missed because of injury by our starters than most teams. Maybe it’s just because I follow the Kings more closely so my perspective is off. but I would really love to see some other team get bit by the injury bug this year and have us stay largely healthy.

Health is going to be crucial
No way this current Kings can just outlast so many teams. The Kings won a bunch of close ones last year.
I expect Miller to regress a bit from last year when he was fantastic. Beno’s improvement will be an X-Factor from 30 to a possible .500 record. Our young frontline will also be a really important for the Kings this season especially Spencer. I expect Mikki and Brad to drop off so Spencer’s improvement next season will really be important.
Anything from 30 to .500 is possible for this team. Missing Ron will hurt no doubt. I certainly would be surprised if they get to the 38 wins they got last year.
Let’s hope they overachieve again!

C'mon now
There’s at least some small chance JT will end up better for the Kings than Bayless would have been.
John Wooden said “Don’t mistake activity for achievement.” Mr. Pritchard seems to have done a lot of smart things, and very well could turn out to be a great GM, but he gets an awful lot of credit for someone who’s team hasn’t even made the playoff yet. He also has an unlimited credit line from Paul Allen and walked into a pretty stacked situation.
I can’t take it as a given Pritchard gets my GM vote over Petrie at this point. In fact, the case for Petrie is a lot easier to make to date.

Of course we’ll never know, given the opportunity, if GP would have taken Hawes over Noah (seems improbable) or JT over Bayless (at least plausible given position needs) unless someone finds him drunk and rambling in a bar somewhere and got him to talk.

We could get a top 5 pick another way
its possible we’ll have our own lotto pick plus the Rocket’s pick in the 25-30 range. we could package them both for a top 5 pick in next year’s draft as well
here’s to hoping that its an unprotected first round pick and Yao and T-Mac have season-ending injuries at the beginning of the year.
is it bad for me to wish that? if so, i don’t give a damn

Consider trading picks for next year's picks?
In all honesty, the 2009 draft doesn’t seem that appealing to me. Sure, there are a few names that jump out at me, like Stephen Curry (the guy who averaged about 40 ppg in the NCAA tournament last year) or that Brendon Jennings guy making national headlines or a few guys here and there who opted not to be in the 2008 draft in the 09 draft. I see 09’s draft as just a moderately deep draft.
The position the Kings need to focus on drafting is the PG position for next year. The only player I could see the Kings drafting at PG is Jennings, but I can’t see any real PGs after that, who would improve the Kings’ PG position.
However, there’s a kid named Ricky Rubio from Spain, projected to be the 1st or 2nd pick in the 2010 draft. I wasn’t too big on him, or even knew much about him. After watching Spain vs China, I finally got a chance to see that kid play. My impression was that Rubio is going to become the European Magic Johnson in the NBA, I guarantee it. He managed to get like 7 or 8 steals that game and basically shut down whoever he was guarding against. On the fast break, it was almost common to see him connect on flashy ally-oops, like a behind the back ally-oop he connected Pau Gasol with.
I think the Kings should look into trading one or even both of their first rounders for 09 (on or just before the 09 draft) to a team with great odds of winning the 2010 lottery.

2009?
Draft Express has him as the projected #1 pick in the 2009 draft, so it’s definitely a possibility.
His bio there lists him at 17 (10/21/1990), but if age was a concern then I’m pretty sure Draft Express wouldn’t have him in their 2009 mock (since they focus on the draft and all).
I don’t know if we can be sure about it until he actually declares, but 2009 is what I’ve heard around (this is the first I’ve seen mentioned that he’d be in the 2010 draft, for what that’s worth).

I was in the middle of posting almost the exact same thing. It’s seems that he’s too young, but maybe he can be drafted and he just couldn’t play here for another year. Where as with Americans if a HS senior was drafted they’d lose their college eligibility, so they wouldn’t declare.

So, I guess we could use that second pick from Houston as trade bait as well. We could also probably dangle expiring contracts out there for teams wanting to get rid of cap before the 2010 FA pool, since we’d have Reef, K9, Miller, and a few others, which would all be huge expiring contracts.

Yeah, sorry about that. I didn’t see the birth date in your post. Just saw 17, or I would have just reference you.
Here’s the rule from NBA.com
Beginning in 2006, the age limit for entering the Draft will increase from 18 to 19 years of age. U.S. players must be at least one year removed from high school and 19 years of age (by the end of that calendar year) before entering the draft. An international player must turn 19 during the calendar year of the draft.
Makes him eligible for the 09 draft.

Well...
If the Kings bomb next season and end up getting a high pick (3 to 8ish), it would be really valuable as trade bait along with Houston’s pick and our mass of expiring contracts. If Rubio declares for the draft, we’d have a great chance at picking him up if a team with the first or second pick didn’t need a PG. Say Chicago ends up with the 2nd pick. They’d be more willing to trade that pick off, since they picked Rose last draft.
I think Rubio could be that key guy. I mean, he was on the Spanish national team at the age of 12! If that’s not potential, I don’t know what is. As for scoring, he doesn’t need to. I’ve seen him play and he has crazy court vision and high enough Basketball IQ that he creates easy plays for his teammates almost every time he touches the ball. Plus, he’s also a great defender. I don’t see how a team could go wrong with him on it.

Here's where the confusion arises
between 09-10:
He turns 18 in October and could enter the NBA Draft in 2009, but two sources familiar with the plans of his agent, Dan Fegan, and Rubio’s family, say they will hold him back until 2010. With Portland Trail Blazers’ draft pick Rudy Fernandez leaving for the NBA this season, Joventut gets turned over to Rubio.

That was a good read, and I’d love to see him on the Kings . . . but I have to think that their best shot to get him would be 2009 (not 2010).
This is the year that the Kings will be integrating the youth, while next year they should all be improving on what they did this year.
I just hope that if the Kings get one of those 3 lottery balls (regardless of overall record) that he decides to make the leap to the NBA.

I think GP was
low on Singletary and Ewing. I know I was. Bobby Brown looks good.

And we know this how?
My bet is there were no takers. Besides, this deal puts us at 15 players, unless ’Reef retires.

miami traded 2 2nd rounders + cash for Chalmers
The Miami Heat have acquired the draft rights to Mario Chalmers from the Minnesota Timberwolves for cash and two second-round picks
from ESPN
Now, I admit, their picks were better than the Kings picks, but it is noteworthy to see that the ability to move up was there, and there was definitely talent available at the start of the second round. To passively wait for the rest’s pickings is foolish.
Point taken on the player situation, but really… not much of an argument to say “There’s not enough roster spots to add Chalmers.” If Ewing/Singletary weren’t longterm intentions, why bother taking them on this ride? The roster issue isn’t a real argument – we’re trading three players for three, but if we had two that player could still go and the roster situation wouldn’t change much. Plus, on draft night I don’t think Petrie was aware that he’d sign Brown.
The only thing I can accept is that Petrie does like them, but conceded them only for the goal of ridding Artest, legitimizing their loss with the acquisiton of Artest. Otherwise, I still consider this a mar on the Petrie resume to not make the best of his situation.

Excellent Points
But if Bobby Brown winds up = to Chalmers, then we made out better because we got him for cheaper. If Brown > Chalmers, then we win out. And as you noted, Miami’s offer was better than what we had. Another point is that we may have had to include Chalmers to make the dollars work and avoid luxury tax.
I think a point that gets overlooked here is that had Artest been trade eligible on draft night, and had Petrie dealt Artest and two 2nd round picks to Houston for the rights to Greene, a future 1st round pick and Bobby Jackson, we would have been hailing GP’s activeness, and the Kings would have received one of those silly “A” grades for draft night, netting a pair of 1st rounders this year and setting themselves up for a pair f 1st rounders next year, while giving up basically a talented but disgruntled player that was likely to walk at the end of the season anyway. Had Portland made this deal, it would have been “Pritch Slap” mania.

Rec'd
I guess it all comes down to context.
Had it happened that way, the counter point might be that Petrie didn’t do his due diligence by trading Artest before everyone’s roster was sorted out (i.e. after the draft). There will always be “what if’s” in situations like this.
All that really matters is how this trade looks 2 years (or more) from now.

Well said
Okay, okay. I guess I can agree with the matter of perspective and how the practicalities make what I was thinking impractical, but I don’t know. Why Brown or Chalmers if we could have had Brown and Chalmers? But, that’s a road of “what ifs” that doesn’t really matter.
I just remember being super angry on draft night, and while I’m willing to concede most of that anger as being unknowledgable, I’m not giving Petrie a free pass on all of it just yet. If Chalmers > Brown, then you can’t help but wonder.

I think GP took a chance
on Singletary and Ewing. They did not work out so he corrected it with the Bobby Brown signing and the Donte Green trade. All’s well that ends well. I’m very happy with the way it turned out.

Probably been said
So I’ll try to avoid being loquacious for the moment. Simply put playing out this season is more important than worryin about the draft pick in 2009.
