26: Sacramento Kings - At least they have Beno Udrih.

NBA power rankings: Celtics no surprise as preseason No. 1 - USATODAY.com. Either Chris Colston is being cheeky (possible), or he's never heard of Kevin Martin. Oy. Incidentally, he rates the Kings 26th overall and 14th in the West, ahead of only Oklahoma City. HATERADE.

HAHA

I am going to keep these rankings and at the end of the year when the Kings are around 20th, I will send it back to USA Today titled, “His name is K-E-V-I-N M-A-R-T-I-N”.

Awful

I don’t even mind the Kings being that low when I then see the blazers at 5(!) and the rockets down at 8. The kings should be about 22, but you know what, being this low means we can only move up that much more.

And I'm like one of the most ghetto-ist guys in the NBA. - Ron Artest

No wonder...

check his profile – he’s been an NFL writer until now (not that USA Today is known for their great coverage anyhow). He’s clearly out of his element and behind the times – those rankings are simply AWFUL (and no, I’m not being a homer – I’m more confused by Portland at 5 and Houston at 8).

Got to love Power Rankings in August!

Any comment that begins with “It least…” is probably not that great. Overall it was a awful countdown but I did enjoy the Mayo-Gay (Gayo?) and the fact that the Knicks are Still in last place!!!

Looking at the numbers as a whole

I have to guess this is one of those pieces that was written purely to generate controversy. Portland at number 5 and ahead of Houston clearly shows there is no thought put into this. If all you need to be great is a bunch of new, highly touted players, the Raiders are going to the Superbowl. And even this diehard Raider Nation member doesn’t believe that.

And it's not just the Kings

His NBA knowledge seems to be lacking a lot.

The Raps could go higher than 15. They have the best tall duo in the league (Bosh/JO).
The Warriors CANT be that good without Baron. He was the heart of the team, 16 is too high.
The Heat suddenly went from last to 17? No way. Wade is Good, Marion is Good, Beasly is potentially good and then there’s chaos, real chaos!
Memphis has some huge holes. Their front court is comprised by Darko and Marc Gasol. We’re talking about two bad players.
And yes the Kings are better than that. Not a lot better, but 4-5 positions higher.

Sixers higher than Rockets, Jazz, Magic, Suns? I don't see it.

Brand is good, but I they’ve still got to be able to play together. This guy probably gets his rankings by making the trades on NBA 2K8 and taking the game’s rankings.

BooHoo

The world is falling upon us. The Kings will finally have a realistic shot at the no. 1 pick again.

Oh my goodness. These powerrankings including Stein’s are so asinine that I get a kick out of reading them like when trolls post here or anywhere else.

“At least they have Beno Udrih.”

“At least he has the time for garbage”

I think there’s no way the Kings hit the 38 win mark this year not when you trade a talented player like Artest for an unproven rookie who was selected late first round and an aging point guard like Bobby Jackson. Sorry to spoil the party but I think Minnesota could be A LOT better this year like maybe +10 more wins from last year. I think Jefferson is so underrated, Kevin Love is going to be a good contributor cuz he’ll get the minutes and then you throw in Craig Smith and Ryan Gomes who are good subs and they have a nice frontline. I think Minnesota missed Randy Foye last year and picking up Mike Miller is huge to fill the gaping hole at the 2 guard spot. I think Kevin McHale has quietly done a nice job up in Minnesota despite all the bad publicity.

I think the Kings’ success this season depends on Beno Udrih’ continue development as a better point guard and also the young big’s development. Spencer Hawes’ continued improvement is going to be vital because I honestly see Miller and Mikki regressing.

Memphis, Oklahoma City are definitely the cellar dwellers in the West but Oklahoma City has a nice future and a couple of more smart moves and they could be a good team.

a few points

i presently live in minnesota (though am a displaced warriors fan) and thought i’d give my two cents about the team whose games i am routinely subjected to on local television. here we go:

-jefferson is underrated, to those who don’t really follow basketball, if you watch him play, the guy is a fantastic offensive force, but he is an atrocious defender. this cannot be overstated, jefferson has a long way to go on that end. adding kevin love, an undersized power forward lacking in the physical skills to really defend athletic 4s, does not help them that much, in fact it probably hurts them. low post scoring was not a need for that team, there are about 100 different holes on that team, it seems like they shouldn’t have bothered to shore up a position that didn’t need shoring up.

-randy foye is not a starting nba point guard. he’s an undersized 2 who isn’t that athletic. he’s a decent offensive player, who on a playoff team comes off the bench. he starts on the wolves for two reasons. kevin mchale loves him, and they are not a playoff team.

-if you walked down any street in minnesota and said that kevin mchale has ‘quietly done a nice job’ the closest wolves fan to you would burst into tears. the guy has been atrocious. the love trade was done to dump salary and because mchale has a man-crush on kevin love. i said it earlier, love was not a good addition.

-that team will improve marginally this year by adding miller, but they are still bad, really bad.

by cap'n hack on Aug 22, 2008 12:27 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Underrated:

1. Minnesota: See above.

2. Golden State Warriors: Losing Baron hurts but Corey Maggette is a solid addition and they’re still going to give people a lot of problems at home and is going to be solid. I see them grabbing 45-50 wins this year.

3. Dallas Mavericks: They still got a talented team and I think they’re still a lock for the playoffs.

Overrated:

1. Portland Trailblazers: Last year they overachieved, Oden still a rookie, Blake is their starting point guard and Bayless is a rookie. They’re still way too young and haven’t won a damn thing yet.

2. New Orleans Hornets: Had a nice year but it seemed like everything just fell right into place for them last year. Peja played out of his mind and is it just me or do they still have absolutely no bench whatsoever and that only CP3 and David West are their only consistent offensive threat.

3. Los Angeles Clippers: Elton Brand and Corey Maggette for Marcus Camby and Baron Davis, that’s a downgrade, I’m sorry Clipper fans. Ricky Davis, ugh, and so many additions that make no sense at all like Knight for Hart? Jason Williams and Brian Skinner??? LOL. That looks like a list of misfit Kings right there. Good luck, LA.

Clippers

I totally agree about the Clips. They will be a bad team this year again. Maggette and Brand were studs and would have been better this year for them than Baron and Camby. Camby is not an offensive threat. Kaman is now the “man” down low.

He can shoot, and he looks great in a suit. Hey, everybody - It's REGGIE TIME!

Clippers

Agree with an *. Brand didn’t really play last year, so in effect the Clips added Davis and Camby, losing Maggette, whom they will replace in the rotation with Thornton. I still don’t think that they are a playoff team, but if you match them up impartially with us, they have us beat at PG, PF, and C, while we’re better at SG, SF (barely?) and depth/youth. We were 15 games better than them last year. It will be much closer this year.

Good analysis there.

by Carl on Aug 21, 2008 10:25 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Thornton vs. Salmons is pretty close. I think Thornton is pretty damn good but Salmons can get better too.

Comparing youth is stupid, imo because youth doesn’t help you rack up more wins unless they can contribute. They have us badly beaten in the front-line.

I don’t like the Kings depth either. Bobby Jackson is old, Bobby Brown is unproven, Donte Greene is just a summer league stud thus far as well as Jason Thompson. Spencer was disappointing in summer league. Francisco is our most dependable player off the bench.

Taking inventory

No Artest.

No proven top 15-20 player. although Martin could be on the verge.

No proven power forward (still).

A career 7-point-a-game scorer as your starting small forward.

A starting point guard with 51 NBA starts.

A center who is not much of a defender or inside presence on either end.

Some young prospects.

Some young question marks.

An inexperienced coach who is suddenly getting dissed by his own fans.

A GM who may have lost the magic.

A couple of owners who can’t keep their mouths shut.

Don’t be surprised when you get no respect this year. That’s fine, because we’re clearly not playing for this year anyway.

by coolcatreportdotcom on Aug 20, 2008 10:02 PM PDT   0 recs

Rebuilding

That’s what rebuilding is all about. Having guys that are unproven prove themselves, earning respect. The Kings didn’t get any respect the last two seasons either. At least the team is headed in the right direction now.

by Carl on Aug 21, 2008 10:27 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes

But winning is still the priority.

Developing young players should NEVER be a major priority during an NBA season. I don’t like nothing to lose mentality because WE HAVE SOMETHING TO LOSE… I think any team who gets less than 30 wins is just flat out embarrasing and the coach needs to get fired for under 30 wins.

Development should take place in the offseason and preseason while doing whatever it takes to win should be priority in the regular season. Unproven players should never be forced time. You should always earn what you get just like Kevin. He earned every minute he got and now he’s the star of the team and will be a major star in the NBA.

I mean, the Kings haven’t done a damn worthy thing since they started the rebuild. If they make the playoffs, I agree we’re heading in the right direction. Anything else is either spinning your wheels quicksand or heading in the wrong direction.

33 to 38 wins is not much of an improvement. 33 to wins to .500, thats an improvement.

BOOK IT!

by kingme18 on Aug 21, 2008 12:04 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

You've got to get worse before you can get better

It’s like rebuilding a house. Sometimes you just have to tear it down to its foundations to rebuild it properly. The Kings could have kept signing middling veterans to MLE contracts, kept Bibby and Artest and maybe hit .500 or squeaked into the playoffs. A team like that has absolutely ZERO chance to win a championship.

You can add vets forever and always be mediocre, or you tear down the house, start a base of good young players, get rid of your vets and try to build a championship contender. The Kings have spent 2 1/2 years trying to do the former with absolutely ZERO success. It’s time to try something new.

I mean, the Kings haven’t done a damn worthy thing since they started the rebuild.

Seriously? Drafting Jason Thompson, trading for Donte Greene, a first round pick and signing a young, impressive backup point guard (Bobby Brown) for essentially nothing isn’t worth a damn thing? What should they have done with a 33-38 win team full of aging veterans? How do you take that team to a championship with no cap room?

by Carl on Aug 21, 2008 1:52 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

agreed

doing “whatever it takes to win” a few more games is not the goal; doing whatever it takes to win a title is the goal. And that might mean trading vets and accumulating draft picks and enduring the “embarrassment” of a 30 win or 20 win season in the short-term for a title in the long-term.

Life is every mammal's journey from very very wet to very very dry.

by Holmdel on Aug 21, 2008 2:09 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Agreed...

as long as we don’t end up in permanent rebuild mode like the Hawks/Pre-Brand Clippers/etc. I trust Petrie enough to believe that won’t be the case.

This might be the wrong time to point out there were more than 2 seasons

where Brand played on a sub-500 Clippers team.

You play to WIN GAMES. I’m not for throwing young players into a game just to see if they can contribute unless its the last games in April and you’re completely out of it.

If playing Beno, Kevin, John, Mikki and Brad 200+ minutes a game, helps you win then go for it.

Now, if Donte Greene, Jason, Spencer, Shelden, Quincy, Bobby Brown show that they can contribute meaningfully and help us win games, then that’s gravy.

You don’t play the young guys 20+ minutes if they don’t deserve it and they can’t help you win games. When was developing a young guys the ultimate goal in the NBA? The goal is to win the title and you do whatever it takes.

BOOK IT!

by kingme18 on Aug 21, 2008 2:50 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

The goal down the road

Is to win the title. The goal this year is to see what the team has. I think it’s ridiculous to play the vets because it’s going to give you 5 more wins.

Now, if we had a bunch of stud veterans, you’re most likely in contention as it is, and no- you don’t just play the kids.

But this team should be playing Hawes, Thompson, Brown, etc. solid minutes. Maybe not initially for the rookies, but by mid-season certainly.

Kevin Pritchard has Chuck Norris tied up in the trunk of his car.

by otis29 on Aug 21, 2008 2:54 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

this seems like a circular argument to me

how can the young guys prove they can contribute meaningfully and help us win games if they’re not on the floor contributing meaningfully and helping us win games?

by beevenator on Aug 21, 2008 4:21 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Eh...

they can certainly show some of that in practice. It should be clear in practice whether or not a) they understand the offense and their defensive rotations b) they’re putting forth the effort to improve themselves (which should be rewarded) and c) whether or not they can hold their own against our starters.

If they’re showing all of that, then they need to get minutes on the floor. If they’re deficient in any of those areas, they need to bust their butts harder in practice to earn it. I’m all for developing our young players, but that isn’t the same as being for them playing as many minutes as possible – most of the development will come behind the scenes.

by cabz on Aug 21, 2008 5:58 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

The way to win games

Is to play Donte Greene and Jason Thompson NOW to find out whether they’re good enough to win games down the road.

Bonzi Wells might have won the Kings more games in the short term than Kevin Martin did. Do you think we should have buried Martin behind Wells because Bonzi was better during Martin’s first couple of years?

by Carl on Aug 22, 2008 11:12 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

How many games have the Kings won the past couple of years?

by kingme18 on Aug 21, 2008 2:52 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Some would argue

that we didn’t really start to rebuild until we traded Bibby. Before that we were putting on bandaids and trying to “compete”. Trading Bibby and now Artest are the first moves we’ve made that look like rebuilding to me. Signing Reef, Moore and Salmons were bandaids, not rebuilding moves.

Ball movement ... is like jogging for most people: They do it occasionally, and it makes them happy. Then they go back to not doing it. - Henry Abbott

by Kfan in Korea on Aug 21, 2008 4:38 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I would agree that this team didn't think of rebuilding until they traded Bibby myself

After all in the end, Kfan, the franchise never committed to anything until they had to, and even then, they simply traded Bibby for breathing room on the luxury tax they knew they would need. They also wouldn’t trade Bibby until they got a PG they felt comfortable starting on the roster. That’s the more important point that seems forgotten in this whole area of debate.
