Bad Times at The Bee
"The Bee offered voluntary buyouts to the majority of its full-time employees today and hinted that another round of layoffs is possible as well." Oof. What happens when the monopoly pub in a one-paper town dies off? Highly depressing.

Wow.
That’s crazy. They’re really, really hurting over there. As a Kings fan, I hope Amick stays on board. He’s done a great job with Kings coverage.
In terms of stuff that matters, who the hell is going to cover the real news in this town? The TV stations only cover murder, fire and car accidents. Bad, bad news.

oh and don’t forget the people who got “trapped” on top of the monorail at the state fair.

Hopefully Marty Mac takes the money and runs.
It shouldn’t be much for a writer of his ilk.

Potentially tragic news for Kings fans
Amick is a huge source of information, especially as a direct pipeline to the players. Let’s hope that he survives.

He may not even be included in the offer...
The buyouts were offered to 55 percent of the paper’s full-time employees and a smaller number of part-timers,
Let’s hope Marty Mac is in that 55% and that they actually want to keep Amick around.

Sadly...
I fear that Amick has begun to make quite a name for himself. I’d be surprised if the Bee offered him one of the buyouts, but I also think he’d have the least amount of trouble getting picked up in a larger market.

Marty Mac over Ailene Voisin
I don’t wish for anybody to lose their job, but in a perfect world Marty Mac would cover the Kings in more publications that Ailene Voisin.

Agreed
I could do without Ailine’s feigned outrage over non-issues, or her sweeping generalities trying to pass themselves off as insights.

I think...
you may have just described every sports columnist ever.

This is sad
for the individuals who will lose their jobs, and I will miss some of the local sports beat writing that you guys have mentioned. But let’s not kid ourselves, the Bee is a shamefully bad product in a contracting market. Hopefully (though it seems unlikely) this is an indication that the city is demanding better news – be it print or otherwise – and the revenue will materialize to support it.

Any fans of "the Wire"
would remember this exact issue brought to light in the final season. Unfortunately it did not bring them better news, it only made the writers more desperate to sensationalize stories. Not saying that is what will happen here but “the Wire” has been one of the most authentic and realistic shows ever made and it brought to light many major issues in America.
I might also add that Jessica Alba is a championship piece, if he thinks Ron is too, more power to him. ;p -Kfan in Korea

I remember reading a Molly Ivins article (in one of her books)
And she pointed out that once upon a time that if newspapers made 4% profit they were doing very well. Like everything this smacks of self important “we need to make more profit because dammit we need to”. So, yes, it sucks for Bee employee’s that are getting involuntarily laid off, but working for a nearly non-existent media company can’t be that swell.

I'm not sure I understand the point
Profit is really only partially relevant. In fact, that is the problem with the mainstream media when they report on business: “Profit” is always highlighted without any look at total revenues. If it is 4% profit based on a huge revenue base then, yes, perhaps, that is a "doable margine. (Probably not though.) In this case, I have no idea of the Bee’s revenues or their profits. Obviously, they are not doing well in either category.

Its not just the Sac Bee, its the corporation that owns it
I know this because a relative of mine works at the Fresno Bee, and he told me the news at the Fresno Grizzlies game last thursday.

Or, if you would have taken a look at the article..
you would see that it mentions Fresno along with a slew of other cities. It isn’t just the Bee, or even this company, it’s simply that newspaper is a troubled medium.
