Sucks for them

And if the Warriors drop to fourth, who exactly is in fifth? ;-)

I meant fourth place for us. I’m a dreamer, what can I say?

TZ

I kind of pictured us higher than the Warriors even with Ellis this year. Face it, they lost Baron which, in my opinion, means they lost their heart and soul. I think there’s only so much SJax brings to the table and this is Monta’s first year as “the man.” With Monta it would be pretty close I think. Without Monta, they are screwed.

im sorry

but i see us being better than the warriors AND the clippers.

I’m not buying that team just yet.

by GOKINGS on Aug 27, 2008 6:57 PM PDT reply actions

The Clips

don’t have anything that special, other than Baron. Camby is good, Kaman’s pretty damn decent, and Thornton’s a young up and comer. But I think that they’re a ways away from really competing with that crew. And, that group is getting a little up there in age so I don’t buy it

Meanwhile, we’ve got a solid core of youngsters and a few halfway decent vets. I’m really excited this year because of how young we got

I'm confused

I had made up my mind about neither the Warriors nor the Clippers, but this is a statement that I’ve seen in many places (so I’m not trying to call you out specifically).

Why is it that the W’s take such a hit because they lost Baron Davis (“their heart and soul” in your opinion) and yet the Clippers don’t get an even remotely proportional bonus because they only added Baron Davis. Looking at last year to this year, the Clippers swapped Maggette for Davis and Camby (since Brand missed pretty much the entire year). Isn’t that a significant improvement? As I said, I’m not sure what I think of GSW/LAC, but I find the lack of consistency when evaluating Baron’s value very confusing.

It seems like people double Baron’s value to GSW, and then cut it in half when assessing LAC.

I agree

Though a lot of it rides on Dunleavey and Davis co-existing. Remember, Davis “blue-flu’d” his way out of New Orleans when he wasn’t happy, and the Clips don’t play as up tempo as the Warriors. I think a lot of people also wonder whether or not Davis can stay healthy for a 2nd straight year.

But if we are a 38-40 win team, then a team with Davis/Camby/Kaman/Thornton/Mobley has to be considered at least a 38-40 win team.

Here goes...

The Clips lose Brand and Maggette but gain Davis and Camby. In my eyes, this makes them about even. Talent-wise I think Brand and Davis are similar and so are Maggette and Camby. The Clips just got a new look, but didn’t exactly get a whole ton better. This is why he doesn’t do much to help the Clips but does a lot to hurt the Warriors. The Warriors lost him and didn’t find someone to fill his shoes. Monta would do great and Maggette’s edition, but Monta as “the man” and Corey as number 2 or 3 do not make up for Baron being gone. Also, Baron Davis benfitted a lot from being on Nelly’s team. Nelly gave him free reign and basically said “here’s the ball, now go jack up as many shots as possible” to which Baron gladly said “okay.” I don’t know how well this flies with Dunleavy.

Also, keep in mind that until last season Davis hasn’t played a full season since ‘02. He’s averaged 60 games a season since 02-03. He’s just not that reliable. And even though he was this past season the Dubs still didn’t make the playoffs.

Regardless of if we do better than the Clips or Warriors in our division I think our future is brighter than the Clips and possibly brighter than the Warriors

What I meant was

Monta would do great and Maggette’s a good addition

They didn't really have Brand last year

true...

but does adding Davis really put them into playoff contention or even make them better than us? not exactly. even if they do better than us this year in the long term they won’t be. the Clips just cant seem to put together a decent team. throwing Baron Davis, Marcus Camby, and Ricky Davis together doesn’t make a great team. if they’d managed to keep Brand while signing Davis then they’d be a tough team. but all they’ve done it replaced one great player who has taken his team to the playoffs once with another great player who has taken his team to the playoffs.

The addition of

Davis and Camby does not make them a playoff team, nor does it make them better than us. It makes them…us. A non-playoff team scratching for 35-40 wins.

I do agree with you in the long term. Our future looks brighter. For this discussion I was just looking at this year, and this year looks like this -

Kaman > Miller
Camby > Moore/Thompson/Williams/K9(woof!)/’Reef
Salmons > Thornton?
Martin > Mobley
B.Davis > Udrih
Hawes/Thompson(orWilliams)/Garcia/Douby/Jackson > Skinner/T.Thomas/R.Davis/E.Gordon/J.Williams?
Dunleavey = Theus

Looks pretty close to me.

Ricky Davis

You guys are forgetting the Ricky Davis addition. Their other moves are great, but Ricky Davis is -5 wins in a year just by his presence on the roster. If he gets more than 20 minutes a night, that should be a net of about -10 wins.

Watch out

Somebody’s going to lecture you about the bad karma of wishing injuries on other teams.

Not me, though. Glad it’s somebody else’s team this year.

Ouch...

perhaps they would like to send us Randolph in exchange for B-Jax?

They are definitely screwed until Ellis returns.
