The Artest trade would have worked in the past
As much as i hated Ron-Ron and his chest thumping screams into the stands, or his " I'm a black hole and you aint getting nuthing back from me, just ask my starving dogs, except for this ugly off balanced shot because I'm Ron "the Man" Artest mentality. i had the feeling i would have loved to had seen it all back in the Vlade/Webb days.
Can you remember the time when you would we'd see Webb jogging down the court with that scowl that said said "I'm a bad MotherF'er" and there aint nothing you could do bout it right after a sick throw down? Or a jumping Jon Barry or Scot Pollard on the sidelines howling at the top of their lungs after a sweet no looker from Vlade to "insert any former king's name here" for an incredibly wide open lay up? I can help but think that Ron would have fit right in with that group if he had been traded for Peja way back.
With all the personalities we had back then and with the system/coach we had, i can't help but fantasize what could have been if we had him during any of the Laker-King series. Vlade and Webb would have kept him and his oversized ego in check. It would have given us that one tough player that every team needs to win a championship. You remember how every Vet with a shady past that got into Adelman's system suddenly would turn into the model basketball player on and off the court, as evidenced in artest' first year here. He would have been the missing piece to the championship puzzle to our equation. (And of course Legit Officiating!) who knows how many championship we would have by now.
Maybe I'm still sore about that stupid Horry three and am still trying to pick up the pieces of my shattered heart, but then again.. what do you guys think?

I appreciate the fanpost, but the screenname. It is really disturbing. Please tell me it’s some kind of joke that I’m missing out on.

that poll needs another option
C)It doesn’t matter whether we had Ron Artest then, because David Stern would have rear-ended us anyway.

as long as it’s a joke. I was on another blog where somebody referenced themselves as “Super Saiyan” which had me caused for concern. As you can see from my sigline, I’m not opposed to a good joke, so no more complaints.
Yes Kfan, read the sigline. Read it good.

Sweet
Now I can respond intelligiently to your post:
Had Ron Artest been a King instead of Peja for the infamous 02 playoff run, would the Kings be contenders? Well, you have to remember Peja had back issues – so do we give Ron the same health problems, or we assume he’d be healthier, or do we assume his wrist acts up again?
Reggie Miller couldn’t control Ron Artest, so I don’t think CWebb could (I feel he has less fire than Miller) – in this case, you can’t control fire with fire. The question is what kind of influence Divac could have had on Ron. Vlade is a cool dude, he could please Artest while keeping his personality in check. So, let’s say we can assume Ron wouldn’t blow up like the Palace with those Kings.
Then, how does Ron as a player help the Kings? Well, I wasn’t nearly knowledgeable enough back then to remember the game action and know how Ron could have helped the Kings. Offensively, Ron would have been asked to do less than he likes now (though this was less of an issue in his early years). I thought Christie did a good job defensively on the perimeter, so I don’t think Ron would be as needed as we think he is now. So, truthfully, he might have made the team worse – bogged down the offense, without as much a making up contribution on the defense. IDK though, really too much conjecture to map it all out in my head.

Probably not
Peja was an excellent shooter, especially from 3 (two-time 3-point champ). He was also a 3-time All-Star (to Ron’s 1).
The year that Ron was in the playoffs he also won Defensive Player of the Year, while Peja was only second in the MVP voting.
It’s easy to remember the horrendous shooting at the end of a very winnable game, but to be fair NOBODY on the Kings could seem to make a shot, and overall Peja did exactly what the Kings needed him to.
As iashwash stated above, Ron may have bogged the offense, and if nothing else he would probably have clogged up the middle with Vlade & Webber. With 3 guys in the middle, who are Vlade & Webber kicking out to for open looks?

Career Numbers
Ron: .329 3P% – 564 of 1713
Peja: .405 3P% – 1426 of 3520
About 20% better accuracy with almost three times the number of buckets; you can’t really compare the two in this category.

Context is everything.
(edited out a bunch of superfluous stuff). Neither player’s game matters anymore since they are both former Kings. Well, until the Kings have to face them again.
Good luck and best wishes to both of them.

Not even 2nd
Doug: .354 3P% – 805 of 2272
The defensive stopper for those Kings teams had a 3P% of .367 while in Sacramento (4 seasons), while Artest’s tenure (2.5 years) netted him a .346 3P% . . . so Artest offers no improvement in that area, at the 2 or the 3 (and he definitely wouldn’t be playing the 1, 4 or 5 on those teams).
Ron’s strength allows him to play the post game, and his outside shooting isn’t setting anything on fire. If you’re relying on Ron to be the kickout threat then you’re better off with Peja/Doug (higher % with a higher number of buckets). If you want Artest to post up, then he clogs the lane and you’re down a shooter.
You can “hit the three” or you can hit the three . . . Artest may do the former, but Peja does the latter.
Artest shouldn’t be mentioned with Peja in this regard, and since the topic is whether or not Artest would have put the team over during Peja’s time, 3P% is not in Artest’s favor at all.
If you want to argue that Artest’s D would make up for his changes to the team’s offense, then that’s an interesting argument . . . but there would be a change to the offense, so it must be taken into consideration.

You went too far
On the analysis. I wasn’t saying Artest would have been better on that team, just that he probably would’ve been more a peremeter guy.
SFs in this league often tend to be either all outside 3 guys (ala Peja, MMiller) or can’t shoot it worth a lick but play more inside. (iguadala, Haslem)
Whatever you say about Ron-Ron, he plays great D and can do both. He’s probably well suited for a team that has that inside guy – such as Houston (we’ll see)
But I wasn’t trying to start a fight about an issue I don’t feel that passionate about. Just getting in a comment.

The thing i loved about artest when comparing him to Peja was the fact that he didn’t shrink away when it was the fourth quarter. Winning time. All i remember from Peja were all the airballs he threw up when the game was on the line. But i still love him. I hate to say this but Kevin Martin is sort of the same way. He gets all his points in the first three quarters, especially the first quarter and doesn’t really do much in the fourth. i wish he were more assertive during winning time, but then again, we had bibby and artest to take over games. Now that he is “the Man” maybe we’ll see another suprising growth spurt with KMart as a b-ball player. That of course would not suprise me at all.
by BearKing on Aug 4, 2008 10:34 AM PDT 0 recs
One quick point
I think part of KMart’s perceived 4th quarter fades might have had more to do with the fact that Artest tended to dominate the ball in the 4th than any flaws in Martin’s game.

1. Lots of assisted baskets by Beno and Salmons.
2. KMart and Cisco showing a lot of leadership.
3. No Ron Artest on the floor.

It also doesn't help
If you give the ball up when you do get some touches.
That said, there were some times last year where Kmart tried to be more assertive at the end of games, and a couple of times when he even sealed the deal. He’s also generally solid at the line when the Kings are trying to hold onto leads.
I expect him to be a lot more aggressive this year. That might hurt his efficiency a little, but it may be the price tag that comes with stardom.

I am definitely not of the opinion that Ron Artest would have been horrible on that team.
I don’t at all think Ron would have sucked all the joy and cohesiveness out of those teams.
I would love to play basketball on a team with Ron Artest, he’s not at all about his ego, he’s entirely about operating within the fabric of the team.
