Perhaps I can shed some light on the subject. My guess is that the “apostrophe” is not a true apostrophe, but rather a French ‘accent aigu’ (similar to the spanish tilde found on some n’s). The accent aigu (é) is found on some e’s, and is meant to signify that the vowel in question is pronounced -ay, as in Donté. Us Ignorant Americans don’t have that letter on our keyboard, so we do the easiest thing, which is to slap an apostrophe after the e. If you’re a grammar freak like I am, you can type the é by holding Alt, and keying 0233.

The correct way to denote that something belongs to Mr. Greene would be: “Donté’s”.
