Sounds to me like he's ready to retire.
The Kings obviously have a plan for SAR to become a big man coach or they would have already brought someone in.

interesting theory
I’ll certainly pay a keen interest to that storyline. I don’t know though, do you have anything else to base that idea on?

not trying to call you out or anything, I’m just curious.

Doesn't it seem interesting that Theus asked for a big man's coach but...
hasn’t received one. I am just speculating but, I think the coaching position is the carrot that Petrie is waving in front SAR to entice him to call it quits. He really fits the bill, he’s intelligent, articulate, has great post moves and provides mature leadership for our young bigs.

I like the idea
I think he’d be a good big-man’s coach. He always had moves and the intelligence, it was just the health issues that kept him down.
Never forget: I am a complete idiot
I like the idea too
I just hope SAR agree’s. His life experience as a player couldn’t hurt here either. He’s experienced losing like few others.
No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. It's simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get tangled, you tango on
Back door accounting?
Make him a coach and pay him as such taking his salary away from the cap?
If he medically retires....
He’ll still get all of the money from his contract, it will just come from an insurance company instead of from the Maloofs (from the Kings perspective, it will also not count against the salary cap).
If he retires and then becomes a coach, I believe that he would draw a salary as a coach while still collecting insurance checks for his salary as a player.
If he thinks he’s done, it could be a nice opportunity for him to “double-dip” from the Kings Organization, while also doing them a favor. If he thinks he can still play, however, he’ll wait it out and give it a shot.
Mutually benificial relationship.
Kings get the cap relief and SAR gets his foot in the coaching door. I could also see Reggie calling his old buddy Mike Woodson and landing SAR a job closer to home.

It's alway hard to leave
No matter which pro sport it is, when a player reachs the end of his career it’s always hard to leave. Just look at Brett Farve. They offered him $20M not to come back, and he turned it done.
Right around the Summer League, SAR was quoted as saying he was only able to workout 3 days a week. And now, a month before training camp, he’s spending 3 weeks on a good will trip to Africa when he could be getting in shape.
I think he’s like any athlete who has spent his life playing a game, and now faces the end because of injury. And he doesn’t want to risk futher injury by continueing to play a bad knees, Joe Maloof just had both of his replaced from a college injury. He doesn’t want to be a quitter and he doesn’t want it to end.
Making SAR the Big Man Coach is a win win for both the Kings and SAR. The King save some money and keep a team leader to work with the rookies. Sar gets his money, eliminate any further damage to his knees, and stays with the team. And, could even get his Championship Ring as a coach.
