The View From Section 214, 1/13
Orlando 139, Sacramento 107.
Orlando shoots 23-37 from the arc.
Slamson is an anagram for Salmons.
I paid to watch Kenny Thomas, Shelden Williams, J.J. Redick and Brian Cook play in the same game. And we made Redick look good.
That's it - I got nuthin'.

Fresh thoughts (The view from...mmm... different sections - 207, 210, 212)
I got a lot of things in my mind so I’m just gonna let them out. This is probably not gonna have an order so it’s just gonna be crazy thoughts all over teh place.
First things first. I get to the game with the wifey a little late (for me), so almost at 7. Walking through the parking lot I notice this really tall girl in like 4inch heels, walking with some guy with headphones on right in front of me. Ohh yeah…. I got to see Kayte up close. My wife recognized her too and even told me to go say hi, but being the wuss that I am I just looked and looked…. and looked. She is pretty hot in person indeed. I’m glad the wifey knows I have a mini crush on her and was cool with all the staring. That was definitely the highlight of the night.
Now onto the game: Ohh boy… do I pick the wrong ones. Earlier in the season I also went to the Blazers one (for my birthday) and took a bunch of friends with me and it was pretty ugly too. Don’t blame me yet though because I also went to the one we beat the Dubs.
Going into it we all knew Orlando had two big weapons: Superman and shooting 3s. Well… they have those for sure and it is indeed pick your poison. Orlando is a better team, no doubt, but to me the key to the game was the coaching matchup and we got killed there. I say this because we were unable to make adjustments and find better matchups for our players. I’m not a big fun of small lineups, but if there was a game where we could have used one for a lot of minutes, it was this. When we went to it in the 3rd and we looked a little better (very little). We needed players who could run out to the shooters and be able to help out on Howard too. We failed to go small and we payed in 3s.
That’s where my next point comes. Why not let Superman prove he can beat you? Isn’t a dunk only worth 2 points? It was clear that the 3s were killing us, then let’s change strategy. Let Howard get his points but don’t leave shooters open!! When we tried that in the 3rd fr a bit, it actually worked. I clearly remember Superman making 2 shots in a row, but then missing 2. Imagine that pattern for the whole game, isn’t that better than 3s raining from all angles?? Both teams had almost same amount of shoots and percentages were not that far off, it was that exra point (from 2 to 3) that killed us. When I checked the boxscore I was surprised because the stats were similar and the only difference were the 3 pointers. Orlando is a better team, yes… but we would’ve had a better chance of making it competitive if we would’ve stayed witht the shooters. That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it.
Other random thoughts:
Spencer tried hard to stay with Superman and I have to give it to him. It is so hard to defend that guy and Spencer did his best.
Kevin, as much as I love the guy, needs to be committed to playing defense. He seems to just go through the motions and doesn’t show a lot of energy. He had really weak double teams on Howard (so did the rest of the team). If you are going to double team someone do it hard and ty to mke the player make bad decisions. It worked a couple times too…
JT had a hard time. Wasn’t his game really. Magic have crazy matchups and it was bad, You can tell he was trying but no really working.
Beno was horrible on defense. Especially on the 3rd quarter when Nelson torched him for like 4 straight possesion. So frustrating seeing him do the same thing for the pick and roll. Going under the screen and letting Nelson take those 3s. I’m no basketball genius andI don’t know how to defend that but it look horrible.
Cisco worked hard. He really tries hard to play defense and help the team. I have a lor of respectfor that guy
Defense, was of course, nonexistant. When we go for that trade or free agent, or even in the draft, we need to get a player who is committed to defense and who will held his teammates accountable. Everyone just seems like they don’t care in that end of the court and there needs to be a chage of culture. At least feel bad whenyour man goes by you, or get pissed when they hit a 3 on you.
All in all, the Magic were clearly the best team (one of the est in the league right now) and we just got handled. I’m sure I’ll think of other stuff to add later but right now I gotta go to bed to get up for work in the morning.
Bythe way, I’m not checking for spelling or anything so I apologize in advance for any mistakes on the whole post…

Good Job em7
My thoughts, and I did watch this wretched thing. I actually don’t disagree with anything you said, just thought I’d focus on a few things.
1. Coaching: No plan, no plan at all. Why have salmons (our best defender) guard Hedo when JT and/or Hawes could probably have controlled him reasonably well? Salmons needed to be guarding the perimeter guys in this game..Its about match-ups against some, but not all teams. This was one of them. I’d have gone 3 big actually, since our bigs are fairly athletic, Brad on Howard (with Williams – yes him to back up), JT on Hedo/Hawes on Hedo, Salmons on Lewis, Martin on Nelson and/or Bogans and you can’t tell me beno can’t guard JJ, Lee or Johnson reasonably well.
I think one of the reasons the team looked so screwed up on D was that they had the wrong assignments – and knew it.
2. Heart, Fire: Most of you know I was concerned even before the season that this roster has too many low key personalities. That type of person just doesn’t have the natural leadership skills needed on a team of athletes. Its not thier fault, thats just who they are. There is no Alpha male on this team, or at least not one old enough to shave regularly, who fires this roster up night after night.
I know there is some skepticism on this point, especially from those of you who never played in team sports, so you’ll have to trust me (or not), its a vital ingredient to a winning team, the ‘lets step on thier necks’ attitude. There actually needs to be more than one – but usually there are plenty of 2nd guys like Cisco and Hawes who feed off the main energy guy and help pass it on. This emotional leader does NOT have to be you’re primary scorer, but he has to be a central figure.
Actually, thats it! Look at the box score, plenty of offense – and plenty that was offensive on the D side, the emotion side.

Clarification on point #1
I’d quickly have gone small when they did, using Cisco and the Bobbys. Or I would have started Cisco in this particular game – for match-ups.

omg..
All Magic players attempted at least a 3 pointer except Howard and Gortat. And all of them made one except those 2 and Cook.

Also
I don’t think it matters, but it shows how sad this game was for the Kings, is that every player, but 3, had a 10 or worse for the game in the +/ category. The only players who didn’t? Mikki Moore at a -7,Shelden at a -5, and Kenny Thomas is your leader at 0. Welcome to suckitude!

What I meant
Before the evil strike line thing popped up, is that every rotation player had a neg 10 or worse this game.
