Game #33: Kings at Pistons
Sacramento Kings at Detroit Pistons, Jan 2, 2009 5:00 PM PST
The Kings have gone East in search of some more wins. Detroit will be the venue this evening, tipping at 5 p.m. Pacific.
What I'll be concentrating on:
1. Kevin Martin, natch. He came in a-blazin' Tuesday and cooled off as the minutes wore on. I suspect a similar narrative, though in the past Martin has gotten back up to speed quickly. And the rest -- practice in Sacramento Wednesday, either light practice or no practice Thursday -- should help.
2. Beno Udrih's urgency. There has been some fantastic commentary from both side of the Beno debate in the most recent BENO?!? thread. Read it if you haven't in a few days.
3. Jason Thompson's offense.
4. Give us a sign, Francisco Garcia.
Again, the tip is at 5 p.m. Go Kings.

Rip and Sheed are out
Big opportunity to get a road win. Hope AI went partying for the New Year and is still a little hungover.
Is it just me or does it seem that the other team always has someone injured when they play the Kings? We still haven’t been able to capitalize so doesn’t matter much but it always seems to be the case.
Go Kings!!

My buddy and I split the price while it was still on sale, so it came to about 40 buck each. He lives in SF and we just share the pw. I’d recommend doing that, cause you get a whole season of games.

See the defensive rotations?
Four guys under the basket to rebound because they don’t respect our perimeter game.
Clogged in there for our bigs.
(of course the screwing up easy points around the basket equal 2x the points, -2 for us, +2 for them, three times i think.)

Mikki the post-less, high-post Whiny, and a rookie….they hardly have to fill the paint against us, lol. It just looks like that because our big guys other than JT also are among the worst offensive rebounders in the NBA.

42-40 despite shooting only 34%. We’re up 16-8 on the offensive glass. Only thing keeping us in the game.

Cool
Just poking the sleepy bear with a stick. You know I love to give you crap about your anti-Brad rantings.
Brad had a very nice game tonight, no doubt. A bit of consistency would be nice. Maybe he made a New Year’s resolution to start bringing his balls to the game.
Adversely, Beno is clearly in dangerous territory. There wasn’t a point guard on the roster that could contain Stuckey tonight, but if you can’t play defense, you’d better do something else well. Beno looked like he should be third on the PG depthchart tonight.
Are we gonna live together? Together are we gonna live?
by otis29 on Jan 2, 2009 8:01 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I've been saying for quite awhile it's clear Beno is the wrong fit here
That being said, going into the season without a PG, and if B Jax/Brown were the PG’s, that decision would be 2nd guessed as well.
Quite simply, there is no easy answer to this solution, and I’ve been thinking about it for quite some time, and still am, but I’m not sure what the solution is. I’m very sure the franchise has the same issue with regards to Beno as well.

Means you’re going to have play collectively well across the board, and if that was the case, this team could contend for a playoff spot.

If we can achieve some consistency we may not be as bad as our record shows. Not only that, but this is far from a finished product. I personally have a lot of hope
by eduardo_m7 on Jan 2, 2009 7:45 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I do too
But I don’t really care about the record. I knew this team wouldn’t win more than 30 games. If it wins 20, I"ll be happy. This isn’t the Sonics where the ownership stinkage is ruining the fanbase’s love for the team. It’s a bad team, and the bandwagon Kings fans don’t know how to handle it. Real Kings fans have been through it, and are probably shrugging about this team, because there isn’t that much you can do about it until you can do something about it.
It’s one reason I haven’t thrown Petrie under the bus quite yet.

Awesome!
As long some team doesn’t give him more than 5 mil a year, I hope we sign him. A 4 year 16 million sounds about right.

A lot high actually
An Amir Johnson deal is at most what I’d pay.

And Amir Johnson is a far better player than BB at this point

if the Kings draft a pg in the to three next year
they don’t need Beno and Bobby Brown
by Beagle12 on Jan 2, 2009 7:51 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Agree
That’s where trouble comes. Beno and his contract are not attractive right now. Maybe he’ll play better but there’s nothing that seems to indicate that. I believe Kevin helps him. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens
by eduardo_m7 on Jan 2, 2009 7:54 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Kevin & Brad really help him
And teams don’t necessarly pay attention to how a guy plays for a team, as much as they try to assess how he may fit into a system they run. It’s why I don’t think the trade front is as bleak as some hope, and with Martin back, it will be easier to find a team willing to give the KIngs what they want in return for Miller.

I don't think Beno's the right fit here

They will need a good backup pg.

Let's not forget
that drafting Rubio or Jenning automatically makes us good at the pg position. Bobby Brown has proven he’s a good NBA player and might be very good in a few years. Neither Rubio or Jennings have proving anything yet.

Neither has Stephon Marbury's sperm yet either
Promise is usually just that. I don’t think anyone who belives the Kings need something else at the PG believes there is a guarantee through the draft, skippah, but maybe I’m projecting.

Yeah I know,
I was responding to Beagle’s point that the Kings won’t need BB if we draft Rubio or Jennings. BB is a good backup plan if they don’t pan out and a great backup if they do. He could average 14-18ppg and 6A starting if he keeps improving.

Why I pointed the response about replying
There was no way for me to know that, unless you’re responding to Beagle directly.

Sure am glad
Petrie passed on Stuckey. :)

One of 14 GM's to do so
He passed on Acie Law IV, too. I guess that makes Dumars a genius, Darko Milicic notwithstanding

I am still trying to figure out why
Dumars picked Darko. But, to quote the most used phrase of the week, “Hindsight is 20-20.”

So bashing Petrie is going to be your new Artest?

Do you feel
Petrie is above criticism?
I think it is a theme to be explored, sure, when you are 8-25 and trying to figure out both how you got here and where you going.

So let me get this straight CC
You’d rather have Rodney Stuckey than Spencer Hawes?

Based on the returns so far
Yep, I would take Stuckey over Hawes. It’s still early, though, and things could shift your way.

Particularly with the team we have
I think Stuckey and Martin would be a dynamic duo.

Hat tip to pookey
He was all over Stuckey prior to that draft. Stuckey and Jason Smith, as I recall.

Didn't see the game, but some stats
DirecTV screwed up their scheduling data, so I didn’t get to see the game. Anyway, I came up with some stats that I find interesting.
Over the last 10 games, the Kings quarter by quarter scoring looks like this, versus their opponents:
Kings | 24.1 | 23.6 | 21.1 | 22.7 | 91.5
Opp | 28.7 | 25.2 | 26.2 | 24.9 | 105.0
Point differentials, in order
-4.6 (1Q)
-4.9 (3Q)
-2.2 (4Q)
-1.6 (2Q)
Opponent scoring, worst to best
28.7 (1Q)
26.2 (3Q)
25.2 (2Q)
24.9 (4Q)
I just wanted to quantify what I thought I was seeing all year. Our benchers are playing a lot closer to the benchers on the other team than our starters are to their starters. In other words, and this is news to no one, our starters really, really suck on defense.
