Blake Griffin

There has been a lot of Rickey Rubio love around here lately and almost universal disdain for Blake Griffin's game.  Griffin, the consensus # 1 draft pick across the board had a great game at Oklahoma State leading his team with 26 points and 19 boards, one massive blocked shot and 38 minutes of great hops, good speed and handle, huge heart and team leadership.

He shot 11 field goals making 9 of them and all the shots from the field were made while he was doubled and sometimes triple teamed.

He's a good passer with good court vision.  I don't know what his wingspan is be he made some unreal rebounds and had very good anticipation for where to position himself to get all those boards.  He got his 16th double - double for the season and his 10th 20/15 to lead both Paul Milsap and Tim Duncan who each had 9 in their college careers. Through this point of the season he's averaging 22 points and 14 boards.

So, who watched the game tonight?  If you did, can you see a way that Geoff Petrie could fit Blake Griffin onto the King's roster?  Oklahoma beat the Nets tonight meaning that based on the way they are playing it's going to between us and the Wizards  Bullets fighting it out for last place and a wealth of ping pong balls.

If Griffin is 6'10" I would take him with the top pick

I think Griffin is more like 6’ 8" and I also don’t think the kings will get the #1 pick. If they did there are plenty of minutes in the front court for a three man rotation of Griffin, JT and Spencer.

Hey be positive

Who out there woulda picked JT with the 12th overall pick? :P

C'mon,

you think one or two inches really makes that much of a difference to an elite player like Griffin?
Ewing and Olajuwon both admit that they are closer to 6’9" than 7’. Millsap is what? 6’8". And insert comment about Charles Barkley here.

Universal Disdain?

Some individuals have probably been more consistent (or is that constant) in their disdain of Griffin, but I don’t see the Griffin/Rubio talk being that much different than the Beasley/Rose talk of a year ago.

I’m with Beagle. If the kid keeps playing this way and he is a legitimate big, Griffin/Hawes/JT can get 30+ minutes each at the front two positions. Heck, with Hawes’ mid-range shooting and JT’s inside/outside game, I could see all three guys on the floor in certain circumstances. That said, there is an awful lot of ball left to be played before we figure out (a) who’s available when we pick, and (b) who’s the best pick.

but go back and look at the posts. But the big point is yes, there is a lot of basketball yet to be played in both the NBA and the NCAA.

IMHO...

…Blake Griffin is a legitimite #1 pick. I don’t think he is a once in a generation superstar (i.e., LeBron or Kobe), but I think he will be a top flight player at his position. I expect him to do well in the pros and make a few all-star games (with a career similar to, say, former #1 pick Elton Brand).

I realize that most people hope for more with the #1 pick, but more often than not, the number 1 pick doesn’t completely change the fortunes of the team picking them (See Bogut, Bargnani, Kwame Brown, Olokwandi, etc.).

Lastly, I feel like Griffin is getting penalized because the rest of the draft is so weak. Most people have come to the conclusion that this is a terrible draft, which is true; however, that doesn’t mean that Blake can’t play or that he won’t be successful at the next level.

The more I watch BG, the more I hope we luck out and get the top spot. And, even if Rubio declares, I will be disappointed if we don’t draft Griffin. I think he will be an answer at the 4 for the 10-15 years and he will fit in just fine with Hawes and JT.

by R-Man on Jan 27, 2009 8:25 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

If you think he's Elton Brand

I definitely in every way possible do not want Griffin. (Not an Elton Brand fan.)

Not exactly...

He doesn’t really play like Elton, but I think his career in terms of being a number 1 pick, and the success he will have should be similar to Elton’s career (i.e, top flight player at his position, a few all-star appearances, but not a super star).

If I had to compare Griffin’s game to anyone, it would be Boozer. They’re both big, bruising types, but there is more to their game than just muscle. They both have nice touch and body control around the basket. They have the ability to score after contact, etc.

by R-Man on Jan 27, 2009 8:40 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Boozer is closer, a DLee with a nice shot

He doesn’t miss anything close to the basket, smooth and in control, none of that ‘30% of rebounds are off his own misses’. He also is a better physical specimen than Lee and moves well with or without the ball.

Good passer from the post too.

I watched carefully last night, trying to judge his height… whatever else, he as several inches taller than anyone else that played, more than that was hard to tell. The announcers kept referring to him as 6’10" though – without qualifying it(?).

Is it possible to use the reply button?

But that being said, I understand the point. But, If the Kings are going to get a big, he better be on the same stratosphere Duncan was at that age. In otherwords, he better be a truly once in a lifetime player, and I don’t see it with Griffin. He’s going to make a team happy (OKC probably), and it would work out well for OKC and Sac if the Thunder got the 1st overall pick, and the Kings the 2nd overall pick.

He has already passed Duncan in 20/15s for a single season – halfway through.

Its unfair to use Hall of Famers though….

Now project further, we get the second pick and Rubio is not in the draft.

I am not against taking Griffin

he’s a stud big guy, plain and simple. A front court trio of Hawes, Thompson, and Griffin would be great, although I do wonder who would backup Spence at center. If it were one of Thompson or Griffin we’d be playing pretty small.

I get tired of all this height talk about him though. Especially when people start saying “Well, he’s 6’10” with shoes on but only 6’8" without shoes." When was the last time a guy played without shoes?

by vfettke on Jan 27, 2009 7:25 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

The height talk will persist until he is measured at the

pre-draft camps. That’s when we find out how tall he really is.

Just because his school lists him as 6-10 doesn’t make it so. He may be 6-8 in shoes, bringing up fears of Shelden/Marcus Pfizer etc.

Even Corliss who was able to carve out a nice NBA career was nowhere near as dominant as he was as a center in college. His problem? He wasn’t 6-10.

Not to beat a dead horse, but it’s the height and wingspan that concerns me. If he really is 6’8" than I just don’t see him being special in the NBA with his length. I think if we go big, I’d much rather have Greg Monroe. I’m not really concerned with the rebounding numbers as some seeing as how Georgetown hasn’t had a double digit rebounder since John Thompson III took over.

I think it's easier to sell that point Beagle

After Brandon Roy has emerged in a similar situation. He was a low to out of lottery pick after his sophomore & junior years, but staying for his senior year, shot him that much further up. Or that’s the myth. I think the 2006 draft shot him up.

I trust your judgment much more than mine. However, I just felt Monroe’s realistic upside looks a lot better than Griffin or Thabeet, along I think the former will still be a solid pro. It’s also just my opinion that Griffin is benefiting from a weak draft. Thankfully we have Greene who’d probably go very high had he stayed an extra year.

Find me one reference in the press about it and we can go discussing it, does it make sense otherwise??

The guy is dominating like no one has very often. More 15/20 games than Duncan and what, 12 games left in the season anyone? He didn’t even slightly fumble any ball sent his way and he only blocked two shots because they didn’t go near the basket when he was there. All jumpshots.

It is and always will be a concern with

College PF/Cs, because if they are closer to 6-8 they need to have the athleticism to play SF in the pros, or they may have trouble translating their game.

That’s all it is, concern. Don’t worry about it. It’s just one more reason not to fret over this stuff until much later in the season.

I am the stone that builder refused..I am the visual...The inspiration..That made lady sing the blues....I'm the spark that makes your idea bright.....The same spark that lights the dark....So that you can know your left from your right...I am the ballot in your box....The bullet in your gun...The inner glow that lets you know...To call your brother son....The story that just begun...The promise of what's to come...And I'm 'a remain a soldier till the war is won....
