Griffin/Rubio Poll

Because they seem to be a bit of a lightning rod around here, a quick poll.

Pretend ground rules - No one wants to give us anything worthwhile for the #1, so we're making and keeping the pick. You can only go by what you know right now, which means Griffin is somewhere between 5'3" and 6'10", and Rubio might be coming out or he might be starting his own alpaca ranch in the Himalayas. Any mention of Pervis Ellison in the thread earns you a week in the box. And "Meh" can double as "K9(woof!)" for you loyalists.

Good luck

Poll
With the 1st pick of the 2009 NBA draft, the Sacramento Kings select:
Blake Griffin

Ricky Rubio

Well I’m European, I have watched him play and I did NOT vote for him.

This draft is very shallow and risky, and I really hope we find an all-star to trade our high pick.

but it seems like the perceived “weakness” of the draft would be more incentive for rubio to come out now, yes?

by sactoreg on Jan 27, 2009 6:05 AM PST up reply actions

Makes sense to me

He wants to be a top 3 pick in the draft (probably more so for money reasons than anything), but also because who wouldn’t want to be? He would be if he came out. The only reason nobody will list him anymore because of all the questions surrounding on whether he would come out.

If there are multiple teams out there with chances to get him in the top 3 pick, I have a feeling that will be the case Unfortunately, of all the teams that are out there, only Sacramento probably desperately needs Rubio.

Besides

Even if he declares, that doesn’t mean he needs to come over. He can still play one more year in Europe and be a Top 3 pick.

I would almost prefer it that way if the Kings get him (barring another big acquisition).

That way, when he does come over, there will be another high pick coming in with him (a la Peja & J-Will) plus whomever is brought in with the mythical 2010 cap space (a borderline All-Star – a la Vlade – is my guess).

Looks pretty much exactly like the formula Petrie used last time . . . with K-Mart playing the role of (or being traded for) a C-Webb type guy.

Rubio definately

The kid’s shown he can play against upper level competition, even NBA all-stars. Any other kid at his age would have been burned BADLY at his age. The sky’s the limit for him…the potential’s so huge. He’s one of those guys that can potentially make a team and be a superstar in the NBA. I think of Rubio as one of those gambles a team makes, where he can be a mega superstar or just a good basketball player. I think the Kings really need to take a gamble out on him cause he has the potential to be something really special to the NBA…not to mention all the fans we’d get in Spain.

I see Griffin, though, as a “safe” choice. I think he’ll probably be a star…but then again, every draft you’ll see a guy like him or Beasley or Oden.

The ideal draft in my mind:

Would involve trading down and making additional trades to somehow acquire Hasheem Thabeet and Brandon Jennings. Getting both of those guys would help all across the board

Bring Chris Bosh to California!!!

I think that only works if Rubio is that good

Well...

Depending on where Thabeet & Jennings are projected, I could see the Kings trading down (with their own pick) to get one of them, and trading up (with Houston’s pick & Salmons?) to get the other.

There are ways.

I have seen Rubio play...

not just highlights so I have no qualms in voting for him

by kingme on Jan 27, 2009 12:30 AM PST reply actions

Rubio is and will be a difference-maker. He is confident and still very hard-working. I’m not worried about his jump-shot as the mechanism is not really bad and it usually improves for young point-guards (see Tony Parker, well, even Chris Paul or Dwyane Wade. I’m not worried about his quickness (as he is quick), neither his speed (as I really agree that what matters is the speed with the ball, rather than without, see TJ Ford vs. Deron Williams), and actually, he really is not that slow (compare him to several NBA point-guards such as Billups, A. Miller, Kidd, Nelson, well, ok, Bibby). I’m not worried about his frame, hwe just turned 18 (see photos of Wade in his age) and he has a good body-control and coordination. And I’m not worried about his individual defense as this is risky, yes, but not ineffective (and again a 17-year old kid against Chris Paul… if you say that ‘He hasn’t shown he can play very well against NBA all stars’, do you think Griffin/Thabeet/anyone in his age would???) and as someone said here, at times of touchy-foul games there is not a lot of great individual pg-defenders in the league (Rondo, Harris, Paul… who else?). Rubio is on the other hand quickly-learning and disciplined so he can play a very good team-defense and also improve as an individual defender.

What I’m worried then? Only that it might not be enough. He can be hardly compared to any player in NBA (no, definitely notJason Williams, he is not so flashy and much more efficient, he is a team-player, much better defender etc etc) and to ‘make a difference’ might not necessarily mean to win a championship. On the other hand, there is no instant solution to win a title, I think, and to make a difference is what Kings do need right now.

I do not know college players too much, really, so it is difficult for me to comment on them but it does not seem there is indeed a difference-maker among them.

Yes, I would go for Rubio, perhaps let him in Europe for a year and then have a fun, hopefully a lot of fun, and hopefully also a lot of satisfaction.

by KingsFanfromCentralEurope on Jan 27, 2009 2:55 AM PST reply actions

BTW

I do not know how many of you have seen the Spain-China game at olympics, apart from the finals, this was the most impressive performance of Rubio, who really won the game for Spain on his own – by his individual defense (yes, again Sun Yue, nevermind)

by KingsFanfromCentralEurope on Jan 27, 2009 2:57 AM PST up reply actions

Usually you hear whispers about who NBA guys like

None of them have commented “on the off record” yet about anybody I can find minus Rubio. It might be nice to see what type of buzz exists for Griffin/Teague and that kinda stuff. I imagine after the tourney, it might be a different story.

I watched Rubio three times

… in the Olympics, only twice with major minutes (vs China, vs U.S. in the gold medal game). Using that info along with all the clips, readings, stats from ACB and Euroleague … I’m taking Rubio right now.

I’ve seen Griffin three times this year (not Monday, actually) and probably twice or three times last season (with an obviously duller eye on him specifically).

I will note that not one of us saw Jason Thompson play last season.

Isn’t that one of the paths to becoming a sleeper?

by smgmatt on Jan 27, 2009 10:11 AM PST up reply actions

to me a sleeper is a player who comes in and does things that they didn't in college

JT was not part of the espn hype machine, but when Joe Dumars, Vinny Del Negro and scouts from 26 teams come to watch you play IMO you are not a sleeper

by Beagle12 on Jan 27, 2009 10:23 AM PST up reply actions

He may not be doing much different

…but that fact that he’s doing it in the NBA is what I feel makes him a sleeper.

Scouts look at a LOT of players, so I don’t think that immediately eliminates one from “sleeper” status.

At this point, however, I feel like we’re picking nits.

Question to you TZ

Do you really think it matters that much anyway? After all, these guys aren’t playing in the NBA, even if the talent level in their competition is high (as I’m pretty sure that’s the case with Rubio, and to a large extent with Griffin cuz of the Big 12).

How can we honestly rate these guys versus NBA talent when they don’t get a chance to go up against them? Also, what happened with Rubio was rare. And he was 17. I’m pretty sure the 17 year old Chris Paul would not do well against the 23 year old Chris Paul.

I knew I wasn't the only one who liked him

This kid is 2 years removed from a quadruple double in a 16 & under game. It’s not like High School stars routinely do that, but a few of the special ones do, and those special one’s end up doing insane things like getting a lot of triple doubles (Jason Kidd alert—whom I don’t like but have to respect).

Griffen is a sure thing

who will be a legit starting PF at the NBA level. Rubio is having a lot of dreams projected on him which may or may not have merit against nightly NBA competition.

Now, we have JT who looks very promising, though he gets pushed around too much (at 22),

What to do if we get the #1 and Rubio isn’t in the draft? I’ve asked before but it does seem like a very good possibility that this will be the situation.

A sure thing does not mean success for this Kings team

The Rubio “question” will largely I think depend on how much hype he gets out of EuroLeague. I don’t think Griffen will get much more hype than he’s currently getting, but at the same time, who cares?

Letting the chips fall where they may will be interesting, but who knows? My bet, if anything, is that Rubio declares for the 09 draft, and he may just wait until 2010 to come over. Or he may come over this year because his buyout is the same. I don’t think it makes a difference. Rubio entering the draft is something he can do this season, and as such, it’s realistic to assume he will probably enter all things being equal.

Here’s a possibility: Griffin likes Oklahoma so much, and badly wants to win a ring, he figures that staying an extra year won’t kill him. Why is it assumed automatically that Griffin will declare for the draft?

Griffins brother graduates this year and he is predicted to be a top pick

I would be shocked if he doesn’t declare. This year is actually his extra year.

Uhm what?

Are you saying that Blake’s brother graduates from OU, and that’s the reason he’s staying? (I am aware Griffin could have declared for the 08 draft.)

I've brought the point up several times

That Griffen puts us in an interesting position if we get the #1.

1. We think Jt has a lot of upside,
2. Its a thin draft so Griffen will be in Very high demand
3. Can we pass on either taking/keeping him or using that bargaining chip for extra value? Multiple picks next yr, a young vet – whatever?

I think not

Not that it matters -

But there is a big difference between an innocent typo and misspelling someone’s name over and over again, as you have done with Griffin. If you’re going to rave about someone/slam someone, I think it helps your cause if you at least get the name right. It gives the appearance that you may know what you’re talikng about. Or not.

Take the best player available

And I do not know who that is yet. I think that Rubio is getting more votes because the perception (perhaps reality) at this point is that we need more help at PG than up front.

Bottom line, we need assets. If James Harden is the best player available when we choose, then you choose him. Either he or Martin then becomes the assett that you need to help you attain the help that you need in other areas.

I agree

it just seems hard to judge after Griffin (if Rubio doesn’t come out). I know there’s a lot of college ball yet to watch. (but)

If 3 (or 2) – 7 are all pretty much the same value, do you then pick from them a position based on need?

If you determined

that two guys were identical, I think that the tie breaker would have to be need. If you thought that Harden was an “8” and that (say) Teague was an “8,” you take Teague. Heck, maybe you even take Teague if he is a “7+.”

I think he missed the whole point of

Why you only included Rubio, Griffin, and the “Meh” option. I voted Rubio, of course, but that’s because that’s who I want the kings to take. It’s not hype that generates my wanting Rubio; it’s a bunch of things driving it. It’s not that Griffin is a scrub; I wouldn’t even be shocked if he’s an all-star. But I’ll be shocked if Rubio IS NOT an All-Star, and I will be shocked if Griffin is a franchise player, or considered anything towards that level.

I don’t think Teague will get there, unless he takes a purely magical leap somewhere in the next 5 years. How many times you seen that in your life 214?

John Stockton?

Tim Hardaway? I don’t know. There have been a few, but it is the exception and not the rule.

I can’t see a guy like Teague leaping over Griffin or Rubio in the draft (at least, not at this point). My inclusion of them was in answer of LTTG’s 3-7 question. That said, I will default to my “nobody knows nuthin’” stance about the draft prospects until the NCAA’s have concluded, at which time I will amend my statement to “nonbody knows hardly nuthin.’”

Man even then

It’s all a guessing game. You ain’t stupid. You don’t do purport bullshit either. We both know that Griffin & Rubio are the 2 hottest commodities. Buzz about both will be generating very shortly. At that point, I imagine both will make decisions about their futures. But that being said, this is about something else.

Worrying about whether Rubio would come over in 2009 is a minor worry. Getting him to declare is the harder part. When he comes over after, provided it is within a year, is really sort of “makes no nevermind” at that point.

Griffin has talent. He’s going to be a top 3 pick if he comes out, and he probably will. But there are no guarantee’s in life.

I agree that the tournament concluding will kick off the draft portion of the program. I don’t agree that it says anything about any prospects, or to NBA teams, whether a guy’s club gets bounced early. Did the Hornets think less of Chris Paul cuz he & Wake got bounced by West Virginia in 05?

Agreed 100% on the early bounce

These guys help or hurt themselves based on how they play, not how their teams play. And on the few occasions that it does happen, it corrects by the draft. Case in point – Mayo dipped a little after the NCAA’s last year, but his stock rose right back up once he started having individual workouts with NBA teams.

Rubio will not enter the draft...

The closet thing to a franchis player is Griffin, if we do not get the first pick, take a look at the kid from Wake Forest, Al-Farouq Aminu and possibly Brandon Jennings. I just hope we do not draft Thabeet, yeah the guy is 7"3, but not nearly as talented as everyone is giving him credit for. I really wish the Kings would have had a top 5 pick last year, sure as hell wouldn’t mind watching Rose, Beasley or Mayo in a Kings Jersey!
