Shareef's 08-09 Salary Can Still Be Taken Off

Shareef is in New York today to see a league-appointed doctor according to Sam Amick. The Kings will have only $61,612,823 on the books after his $6.2 million is taken off for this season, if the doctor diagnoses him with arthritis and "sees the damage that led (him) to have two arthroscopic surgeries."

Of course, every team will be asking Reef to return to the league so they can screw the Kings. Right? I doubt that.

This is good news for the Maloof’s checkbook, but, nothing really changes with Reef. Just saves the Maloof’s money. Which is what they ultimately care about. (Also, it creates a ton of extra cap space along with dumping Miller and potentially Salmons off the cap.)

When it goes through...

that means the Kings will only be $2.9 mil over the cap. I’m glad he’s done a good job with JT. Bynum has Kareem, Howard has Ewing, JT has Reef.

Here’s the real benefit. It means they can take more money in an expiring contract than the money they give out making it easier to make deals for the franchise.

The obvious point is that it saves money for the Family. The not so obvious point is that it distances them enough from the luxury tax that they can make a move for a player and not worry about going over the line this season. Especially if the deal includes taking on a extra 4 million in a deal this season to get a bunch of expiring deals that come off your cap.
