I think next year may be even more grim than this one

I think our best chance is really to make a trade at one of the deadlines (this year or the next) for a player, not cap space. While that new Pew poll indicates that Sacramento is a more popular place to live than you might expect from the public at large, I don’t know if NBA players feel the same way.

Who knows?

Depends who we get. Its harder and harder to say, but I still believe there’s more talent here than meets the casual eye.

This team is a decent player away

from being a 30-plus win team. It’s true, we have some decent players and we’re just good enough to be competitive but still lose. I guess it depends how bad we want to be for how long in terms of whether we start to build with real players or picks that will take time to develop or some combo.

2010 is the new 1998

More pieces will be in place next season, but we wont cross the threshold of competitiveness until 2010, methinks. With actual contention a year or so later.

2010

Which means that next year could be like the shooutout at the OK corral around here.

We certainly won’t be anywhere near .500 ball, but I don’t think next season will be as grim as some here are stating. If we continue in the direction we’re heading and jettison some unnecessary talent, we’ll be the beneficiaries of a high draft pick, have an youthful and enthusiastic roster laden with talent, and a chunk of cap space.

Even if we’re still bottom dwellers in terms of our record, I think I’ll feel a lot better about the future of this franchise in 2009.

Just wondering...

Who the next GM is gonna be. I mean if the Kings don’t make some real significant moves to improve this roster, Petrie is headed out the door. None of his moves as of late have made any improvement to this roster at all. The team is Abysmal. Now if he was tearing it all apart to rebuild, great. But how many years is this rebuild gonna take? 3? 5? Perpetual? I just can’t see us getting from here to there with this group. And I don’t see any one or 2 free agents coming in here and making this even a .500 team. I hope I am wrong, but it don’t look good, and it don’t look good for a long long time. I hope the first step is jettisoning #52 at the trade deadline. If there is another team out there that will pay Miller, we don’t even want anything in return.

I have cut the Mouth and Nose out of my Paper Bag, but I am contemplating not cutting out any EYE HOLES so I don't have to watch this mess at all...

They're training Levine to be the next GM

cause Petrie isn’t going to be doing this forever.

by Aykis16 on Jan 30, 2009 1:53 PM PST up reply actions

Levien would be the next GM, most likely

but this isn’t all Petrie’s fault. The Maloofs have put off rebuilding for a long time. The Artest and Bibby trades were the first real step towards rebuilding

And necessary steps

The Bibby trade saved this franchise a ton of money.

I pick 2010.

Next year we’ll probably play better than this year (We’ve been shit out of luck in some games) and hopefully the guys come in with a fire. Our young guys will also be getting more time, and if Donte follows the same course as most of our rookies do, his sophomore year will be his breakout year (see: Speed, Cisco, Spencer). It also depends on what we do this summer. Do we pick up Boozer? Do we sit out this summer’s free agent market and wait for 2010? That’s on Petrie.

If I had a choice on the poll it would have looked like this
  • I don’t think 500 is possible, but with the right trades, draft pick, and off-season signings, it’s possible to get very close to 500, or right around there with a break or two
  • 2010 is the real year for this team to put it all together anyway—it gives all these players a whole year to gel and put together a system putting this team back on track in the immediate future

So as a consequence I voted not until 2010

But, considering where this team is at, that’s not a terrible overall thing. It took awhile for Portland to get some redemption to where they are at now. And they got many better overall picks for many years overall than Sacramento has. I’m not really not too worried about the pace of the rebuild, as much as I am worried about the way the pieces Sac currently has, how it limits the potential future of this roster 2 years from now, and how Petrie chooses to deal them.

2009 if we can pick up a legitimate PG & Defensive Big Man

I think we have decent offensive talents from the likes of Martin, Garcia, Thompson,Salmons(if he’s here) & Brown. Hawes maybe he’s still on the fence in my opinion.

We need defense both on the perimeter and in the paint. I think if we pick up Rubio and maybe Marion we are definitely a 500 team.

by nothingbutnet on Jan 30, 2009 2:20 PM PST reply actions

If we draft Rubio we could be up for the #1 pick again in 2010

If Rubio enters the draft and we pick him, it’s more than likely that he doesn’t start playing until 2010/2011. Add to this, that the team will be 1/3 1st & 2nd year players, and your looking at another 20 something win season.

It’s going to take several defensive big men to improve our interior defense. We’re bottom 3 in points in the paint, shooting percentage in the paint, dunks, & and 1’s. As much as I like JT & Spenser, unless we get a defensive minded coach that can teach them how to play defense, I don’t expect a hugh improvement next year.

Finally, until Martin improves his defense, we’re going to need the best defensive PG we can find. I don’t care if he can score or not.

sorry all but the Kings aren't making it to .500 for a season for at least the next two seasons

that brings us to past 2010, in fact past 2011 because I don’t count this year (hey, my opinion, my rules). The Kings aren’t hitting .500 unless the rest of the league plays 50 games to our 82 and they get to erase the other 32 losses.

The Kings need leaders: A Coach to lead, a player to lead. Not just to contend but to pretend to contend – .500 ball makes us fans dream playoffs.

Am I overly pessimistic? Senor Buzz-Kill? Perhaps, but as of today my future view doesn’t show me that missing piece, the glue, the star, the formula. I expect GP/JL to build from youth upwards – draft picks and young trade talent and that mixture takes time to develop into a winning team. Time measured not in months but in years.
