Game #36: Kings at Bulls

Sacramento Kings at Chicago Bulls, Jan 6, 2009 5:30 PM PST

Hey, if it's an equally neurotic team you need ...

Chicago might have the only roster less happy than our own. Can't be a bad thing when all the good things create inexplicable fissure.

Game's at 5:30PM PST. Let's go Kings.

How do the Bulls underperform so much?

didn’t the make the Conference Finals two years ago? Then the following year they’re a lottery team and managed to get a really talented PG in the draft and are still well below 500? The only major roster change was the one that sent out Ben Wallace (who underperformed big time as a Bull) for Larry Hughes. And they were playing poorly before that trade anyway. Really, what is up with this team?

They made the Semi's against Detroit

And lost in 5 games, and this was in 2007.

That's right

and i did say two years ago. Then 2007-08 they completely underperformed because Skiles supposedly started to rub people the wrong way. And now, they aren’t as good as they were in 2006-07.

I don’t want to be last. Say what you want about the lottery but I don’t want the Kings to be the worst team in the league. Plus, remember that the team with the best chance of getting the number 1 pick usually doesn’t get it.

IMO

the Kings are not making the playoffs they should develop the young talent this year, trade off what age they can get value for. They will get a good draft pick next year weither it is 1,2,3 or 4. Draft the best player they can get (hopefully a PG) and then they will be in position to make a serious run at a title in a few years when all of their talented youth matures. Weither the kings are above or below the Thunder matters little to me

by Beagle12 on Jan 6, 2009 8:37 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree

It wasn’t about the Thunder or any team in particular. It’s just hard to be last… that’s it. I agree that we need to play the young guys as much as possible and give them a chance to learn and be ready to contribute. The draft pick will be good, there’s no doubt about that

Blake Griffin could really help this team.

That we don't agree with

It’s the same reason I don’t want Carlos Boozer. I don’t think this team is lacking a physical player down low. Personal opinion.

I don't disagree

But if Griffin is the best player available, you take him. Yes, a Chris Paul or Deron Williams would help this team more than a Blake Griffin, but Griffin is there and the second coming of those guys isn’t, at least so far.

It’s an opinion, just like what the Kings really need is a PG through the upcoming draft.

Totally missed the game

But saw Kayte and Koz arguing about Kevin taking the shot

It’s been talked about over and over: we need a clutch player. And I don’t think there’s a better guy for the job than Kevin. He missed it, big deal. Had he passed it to Brad or Cisco for that open 3 I’m pretty certain they would’ve missed it too.

by vfettke on Jan 6, 2009 8:25 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

And then everyone would've complained

that he’s not taking responsibility. It was a high percentage shot that he missed. He needs to get better at that. We wouldn’t have been in the game if it wasn’t for his play in the fourth quarter anyways…

by eduardo_m7 on Jan 6, 2009 8:30 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree

More often then not he’ll make those shots or get the foul call. When it’s a close game with little time left I don’t think anyone should have the ball other than Kevin unless they are particularly hot.

www.mancancook.net

by vfettke on Jan 6, 2009 8:36 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yep

If Kevin has his game legs back we win this game hands down and quite possibly the last two. The shots Kevin is struggling with are late in the game when he is just plain gassed. On the other hand, how many teams have had their best player injured, earning a high draft pick, and then been amazing the next year when the main guy is healthy? I think the 2009 Kings are going to be pretty darn tough of things go right.

How ugly is it?

Prior to this squad, the worst half-season record for the Sacramento Kings was 12-29, which they “accomplished” in 88-89, 89-90, 90-91, 91-92, and 93-94 (yes, exactly 12-29 in every one of those years!). So all this group has to do is win 4 out of the next five and they will only tie for the worst half season record.

By the way, the 99-00, 00-01, 01-02, 02-03 and 03-04 Kings all won at least 10 games by the time November was over.

Wow

It’s not often you get a chance to choke twice in the last nine seconds of a game.

I’m not sure why he faded away after the pass from Brad, but he obviously shortarmed it a bit because of that. Probably just thinking a little too much about it.

I have no clue why he passed up the three and drove to the bucket. That’s just not smart basketball and clearly he should have kicked it out at that point, because we needed a three.

Of course, without this play in the fourth, the Kings don’t have a shot at the end anyway, so it’s hard to complain.

Kevin’s little end-of-game monkey on his back is starting to grow into a gorilla. The good thing is he has a whole wasted season to get it off.

by Beagle12 on Jan 7, 2009 4:32 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

You're wasting your time

When Kevin plays well down the stretch of a game, as he’s done many times in the past, CCR will abruptly disappear. Kind of like last season – it’s amazing how he would pop in when Artest put up some numbers, but vanished when he acted up.

I think it's fair to criticize

Kevin’s decision making at the end of the game last night. The missed layup and the missed jumper from the baseline? Those looked like elevation issues – that layup was an easy make normally and the jumper came up short.

I don’t know if he was gassed – I do know he played through what looked to me like a pretty nasty ankle injury when he was fouled on the three pointer.

Fact is – you still have been unable to dispute the clutch stats from 82games.com which contradicts your take that Kevin’s performance diminishes when the game is on the line. Fact also, you are the king of taking small sample size and attempting to use it to back up your opinion – it’s always one game, one shot, one moment in time rather than a longterm look.

Every player who is the focal point of their team is going to miss shots down the stretch. Mike Bibby’s a legend around here for being “clutch”, although there is no statistical evidence to back up that fact, and he missed plenty of game winners and free throws late in the fourth quarter. I’ve seen Kobe Bryant miss plenty of shots in games where his team is down 6 points or less in the last two minutes. Hell, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson had their share of missed game-winners.

But when you focus on these single moments, you look foolish. And your history shows that when Kevin makes his next game winner, or hits two free throws at the end of the game to put a game out of reach, you’ll probably be out of town without internet access.

Are we gonna live together? Together are we gonna live?

I've actually enjoyed...

…watching this road trip. Kenny Natt has this team at least playing hard again, which is not something we could say towards the end of the Theus era. There seems to be some accountability, albeit I don’t really understand Natt’s rotations.

The losses are frustrating, but at least there’s a semblance of cohesion there that was missing previously.

by coolcatreportdotcom on Jan 7, 2009 12:41 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Naturally

You can document that imaginary “history.” Or maybe it’s just you focusing on some “single moments.”

Bibby and the Kings under Adelman knew how to close out games, so more often than not they emerged victorious in close games. They expected to win, and that belief alone helped them prevail many times. Then came Musselman, and we are frankly still trying to recover from that. Now the Kings expect to lose, and unfortunately that’s the culture Martin has developed under. I think he can be the one to turn it around, but it’s a work in progress.

The Kings with Martin are at least competitive and fun to watch again, and that alone is a step in the right direction.

That comment has been repeated

But it seems like he only gets “gassed” when the game is on the line.

Again, though, he is going to break through all this crap eventually, and pretty soon we will be celebrating his winning shots more often than not.

1) was special

2) lost more games on missed shots in the final second than Kevin has taken by a very wide margin. Relax, this team is far from a finished product. Let’s see how we do when we are putting some legitimate talent around K-Mart, until then, its his turn to learn and struggle.
