Is it to late???
I've been thinking about Kevin Martin and what he does well and not so well. And I've kinda been going back and forth about this for awhile and want you guy's opinion.
The question is, is it to late for Kevin Martin? What I mean by this is can he change? If the Kings improve with him at the helm can he change his game? The biggest criticism I have of K-Mart is the aspects of his game that doesn't have a direct relation with him scoring the ball. Thats right Assists, Rebounds, and Steals. Now before you start compiling arguments to this claim read on. My gripe is at this point in his career (5 yrs) he has learned to do one thing well (score the ball), one thing decent (he has learned to rebound for his position at 4.4 in the last 2 yrs., but 2.7 this year) one thing average (steals at 1.0) and the rest subpar (assists, overall defense) Now this year he went on record saying that the all-star game isn't important because he has outplayed previous selections!!!??? Really? You think that Kevin? I am worried that as this team improves (if it improves) and he becomes the cornerstone that we build on; he'll become the reason we don't win. Because he doesn't share the rock, he has (or is) becoming an "I need to score to get the win" kind of player and once a person hits that zone its hard to leave it. I mean yes this team is full of pieces of players but not trusting your team mates to score some is not a great place to be. What do you think? Has he drifted into the "Marbury" zone, the post-shack pre-gasol Bryant, the pre-jackson Jordan? or is there hope? Do you think K-Mart can change? can he share the rock, defend, and be the utility player he can be? The kind of player Lebron, Wade, and to a lesser extent Roy is? Meaning can he turn into the type of player that can and WILL do what it takes to win?

no its not
i think kevin martins all around game will never really be that great but hes a hell of a scorer. He also seems to want to get his defensive game going, he said so himself. I think he can still do w/e he wants if hes willing to do so. Never to late to improve your game. Good observation though.
Hit the clutch, hit the gear, hit the gas and im GONE!!!

yeah but...
building around a scorer won’t get you anything in this NBA, last year he was 6th in the NBA, had Ron-Ron giving you 20 and the team still has a losing record. Now you’ve dumped some people and given the leadership over to Kmart. Has he shown to you (this means everyone) that he can lead a team to victory?

He hasn't been around this team long enough to know that answer Sam
Give me another month, and I’ll be able to answer confidently how I feel about this group. But, aside from the rookies/Shawes/Martin/Cisco, there isn’t that much to like.

all he is proven
is he can’t lead this team to victory, not that he can’t lead a team.
This team consists of:
A former All-Star center that is only interested in this team about 1/2 the time in this team.
A role-player starting at PF that has no business starting. Between them, they are really bad rebounding and defensively.
A very efficient small forward that isn’t good involving other people.
Martin
A PG that may or may not be a starter in the NBA. The best thing you can say about his performance is its been inconsistent.
The Bench is young guys that barely have a feel for playing in the NBA, Bobby Jackson in his twilight and Cisco.
Oh, and Martin has missed most of the team injured.
So, yes, Martin can’t lead this team to victory. I think most of us would agree he’d be better as the 2nd or even 3rd best player on a good team. Personally, I think that would be a hell of a team if Martin was the 3rd best guy, because Martin is really, really good, but there’s no question he needs help, probably not only in maturity of our young guys, but also in additional talent.

Right and wrong I think
He can easily be the number one option for scoring – probably will be. But is that the same thing as being the leader on the floor? Kevin Garnett and others aren’t ncesarily their teams top scorer.

So as I read your post, the question is will K-Mart become LeBron, Wade,or Roy?
When you clear out all the other filler, that’s what you are asking. The answer is clearly no. So what, we should get rid of him because of that? He is a “shooting” guard. And he is one of the best shooters in the game. Maybe if we surround him with a PG that gets assists, and a front line that can rebound and play D, we can win. This whole conversation seems utterly silly to me. Let’s take our best player—by far—and ask if he is good enough. Let me say in no uncertain terms, K-Mart is not your problem. Let him do what he does well, get off his back, and worry about the supporting cast, Newsflash, even if you package every player on the team and add Gavin’s hairstylist, you aren’t going to trade for a LeBron, so you might as well stop worrying about whther or not we have him. Oh and let’s hope for some good ping pong ball rolls while we are at it.

Ya know...
I think my question is more along the lines of is it wise to focus on Martin when his skill set is slowly becoming conducive to a one man show? Won’t that hurt this teams development down the line? Will Martin stay a King if he becomes the 2nd or third best player, after being the feature player?

Ricky Rubio, Ricky Rubio
anyone here seen him play more than that one game in the Olympics?
I’m not criticising, just worried about a lot of hype clouding judgement.

I think thats my point
I remember a lot of athletes that were hyped forever but didn’t turn into much, in many sports. I could do a list if I had the energy right now.

Okay you're right
LeBron James also got hype from the time he was 15 on. He sucked too.

Fine
The ‘Boz’, Kwame Brown, Reggie Bush (yes, a bust as a #1), T Madarich, Todd Marinavich (proclaimed since he was 13), Sam Bowie, Tractor Trailer, Shawn Bradley, Joe Klein, Jon Koncack (a two for one year), Billy Owens, Sergio in Golf, Danny Ferry, Bo Kimble, numerous baseball players……

So you're OBVIOUSLY right
None of those hyped players were busts once they got to the next level.
In any case, i wasn’t knocking the kid, just worried about over-hype vs true analysis of his potential against NBA competition.

Free throws!
The man led the league in free throws per game last year, and he’s racing back up the charts right now. This makes him an amazingly efficient scorer, in a league with Dwyane Wade and Amare Stoudemire when it comes to points per shot.
Martin would also be amongst the cheapest “2nd bananas” in the league. He’s got 4 years left on his contract after this one, and he tops out at about $12.4 million. Compare that with Rashard Lewis, Pao Gasol (and Lamar Odom!), and others.
So whether he becomes “the man” or not is almost beside the point. Martin will not be more successful until the Kings surround him with better talent (the ghost of Mitch Richmond appears on the horizon). Until the Kings get another stud in here, it will be nearly impossible to determine whether Martin is destined to be Batman or Robin.

Ideally...
Ideally Martin is neither Batman nor Robin. Best-case-scenario, Hawes, JT, Greene & Co. all elevate their game (along with whatever we pick up via draft & trade/free agency) to form a basketball “Justice League” of bad ass mo-fo’s. I’m thinking something like the championship-winning Pistons, only with younger, more athletic talent. For example, Martin would be the better version of Rip, Hawes & JT being a more versatile frontcourt than Wallace & Wallace (although Sheed’s versatility is hard to beat), Garcia or Greene being a better version of Prince, and hopefully Rubio or whoever capable of leading the squad almost as well as Billups (can’t really ask for more than that).
Plus, we’ll have whatever the trade/free agent winds blow our way.

Kings vs. Pistons
The Kings would indeed be similar to what the Pistons had talent wise except for the 2 things that made the Pistons better then the rest. That being Mr. Big Shot running the point and their im going to beat you up attitude.
