Pete Carril Back on Sacramento's Bench
The Sacramento Kings today announced that former Kings' assistant coach Pete Carril will return to the organization as a Basketball Development Consultant according to Kings' President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie.
"We're really excited to have Pete come back and join us as a consultant to assist Kenny (Natt) in all areas of individual player and team development," said Petrie. "He's really excited about rejoining the club and adding some of his experience and understanding of the game. I look forward to seeing him back here." [...]
"Coach Carril brings a lot of winning experience and knowledge about basketball in general," explained Kings' Head Coach Kenny Natt. "As a young head coach, I will be able to utilize his experience and knowledge about getting the best out of our players. I'm looking forward to his input. It's exactly what I need at this point."

Awesome!
This is so much better than the proposed Whiz in the sideline, that was specualted on a while back.
Coach Carril can really bring a lot to the table.
Not to mention that this signals two things, a REAL return to the Princeton.
AND
That Petrie is in control of the basketball operations.

Petrie's been in control of the good ship Kings for awhile
It’s just some of the decisions with the meddling of the Maloof’s are still evident on a day to day basis. It always takes awhile to purge that by any realistic measure.

Well, look at that...
This is nothing but good news. The offense is going to get more efficient, methinks.
Rocks are free, and slingshots easily stolen.
Defense will get better too
Also, Donté Grééné will be assessed by Coachie, and that will help the Kings a long way to seeing how Donté fits into the overall future of this team.

Dude'
Donte’ and Coachie won’t cross paths until Donte’ comes back from the D-league. That sucks.
True but
first of all, Greene to Reno is not confirmed yet, as far as I know, and even if it was he won’t be there for long. The team just probably wants him to get more burn and play some ‘meaningful’ games over there. Bringing coachie back has a lot to do with the young players so he’ll be with the team one way or another.

Brad's generated little interest around the NBA
Maybe Coachie can generate some? It can only mean good things if Brad Miller starts to play better.
Brad Miller has played better (or gotten better stats)
since Martin’s return. That is something.

Wow
Is all this unanimous coachie love resulting from despair over a horrible basketball team, or will he really have that big of an impact?
I mean, I get that we like the guy, but geez. This is what I’d imagine if Spencer Hawes ever met Sarah Palin in person. :)

He was basically Tex Winter to Adelman's Phil Jackson
He brings expertise, especially when it comes to offense. He also does it without ego. He wants to help and make guys better. He’ll bring a lot. Kevin Martin probably wouldn’t be Kevin Martin without Coachie

Coachie may be going with Donte
f Donte’ Greene and Pete Carril have anything in common, it’s that they’re restless.
Greene, the 20-year-old rookie small forward out of Syracuse acquired by the Kings in the summer trade with Houston for Ron Artest, hasn’t seen the floor in seven of the last eight games and is itching to feel like a basketball player again. Carril, the 78-year-old Princeton coaching legend whose offensive mind was such an asset to the Kings when he was assistant in Sacramento for 10 years, yearns to make an impact on the floor again as well.
It appears both men will be getting their wishes soon, as the Kings announced today that Carril will be pulled out of retirement to serve as a consultant and Greene – according to sources close to the team – will depart for the Kings’ NBA Developmental League team in Reno on Saturday.
I can live with Buckets being in Reno for a few games

This is about Kenny Natt, Rex Kaladian
Donte Greene, Spencer Hawes, Jason Thompson, Kevin Martin, Francisco Garcia, and this is definitely about Geoff Petrie. What is it not about? Control, and more accurately, who no longer has the type of influence to expect un-realistic things out of a team, and a GM they won’t fire, and whose style won’t change, and why, despite the utterly awful season that is currently continuing, that this season has become about a franchise being built from the top down.
If you want any silver lining, other than Pete Carril is just a fucking ridicoulously incredibly brilliant basketball mind, and a guy who is reverred in some ways as Pete Newell was (although not quite on the same level), and even better, a guy who brings his best when working with young players. If you have a coach who can find a way to bring out talent out of a low 1st round draft pick, all the high draft picks in the world won’t matter if you don’t have an organization and coaching staff that does everything it can to provide a nourishing, developmental environment for young talent that can ultimately bring great things to a team at some point. Guys like Pete Carril don’t grow on trees, and as long as the Kings have him, he is literally (however tall he is) pure genius. And to that end, I offer this:
I found Carril’s journey fascinating. He’s always had a place in my heart, ever since the short-lived Otis Spunkmeyer Classic basketball tournament at Cal, in the mid-‘90s. Carril brought his Tigers out for the Christmas tourney, and in a postgame press conference before a sparse room, was asked about playing the Otis Spunkmeyer Classic. Carril answered: "We’re very proud to be here, we think this is a fine tournament with a lot of quality teams, and really, when it’s all said and done, the man makes a hell of a cookie."

What, if anything do you guys think this says about GP's confidence in Kenny Natt?
"We are in the business of kicking butt and business is very, very good." - Charles Barkley
It may be a vote of confidence for Kenny Natt
Follow the logic.
- Would GP hire Carril to help Natt if they’re going to dump Natt at the end of the season for a new coach? Doesn’t seem likely to me. This is exactly what they wanted Theus to do, that is, hire an experienced coach as a mentor.
- Would GP be willing to gamble that a new coach (e.g. Flip Saunders) would be open to having Carril forced on him. Doesn’t seem likely even if the coach was a Carril acolyte like Eddie Jordan.
- Would Carril be interested in only coming back for just the remainder of this season? Maybe, but that doesn’t seem likely either. More likely Carril (and GP) would want to stay as long as his interest and health permitted.
That's he's inexperienced
especially when it comes to developing younger players. Natt is a Sloan disciple and wants to use a tough love sort of approach, which doesn’t always work (see Udrih, Beno). Carril does great with young guys. No matter what it says about Petrie’s confidence in our coach, it will only be good for Natt.

That they're showing mercy
hozr is painting it as positively as is possible.
Reggie wasn’t the problem
Natt isn’t the answer
we need an offensive game plan that is actually, well, you know, A PLAN

Player development
I think this is more about long-term player development than the day-to-day coaching of the team. The Kings have a bunch of young guys Coachie can help get better. It has little to do with Natt.
Shut up and Coach
Yes
but you develop players in large part by teaching them to play within a system that works and makes sense from game to game, quarter to quarter
God I hope so……
"You keep on using that word

by lietothegirls on Jan 8, 2009 8:59 PM PST up reply actions
Not necessarily
GP builds teams based on the Princeton offense. Carril could be here to teach Natt how to run the Princeton offense in addition to developing the talent. Natt has more than hinted at that in recent Bee articles.
This is awesome news
Great call by Petrie. This is going to help everyone, from Natt, to Beno, to Kevin, to Greene. This is probably one fo the best moves the team could’ve made this year and it doesn’t even include a player. Welcome back Coachie!
Not on the bench?
Enter Carril. The man so widely known as “Coachie” has remained close with Geoff Petrie, the Kings basketball president and Carril’s former player at Princeton. He will be on hand as a source of wisdom and teacher but he will not be on the bench of interim coach Kenny Natt.
Just face saving for Natt
and GP I hope. I want him to design a system for these guys in practice that makes sense.

Honestly...
I think that may have less to do with saving face and more to do with the reality that Carrill is pushing 80. The often on the road 80 game grind of the NBA is going to wear anybody down, let alone an octogenarian whose spent the past 3 years retired. Make no mistake, Carrill will have an intimate impact on this offense, it just may be asking a bit much to have him make that impact on a February Tuesday in Toronto…

I wonder if and when there will be a noticeable difference on the floor.

Great news
Welcome back
Ball movement ... is like jogging for most people: They do it occasionally, and it makes them happy. Then they go back to not doing it. - Henry Abbott
To me, the interesting apect of this is..
the direction it establishes for the team. I don’t think you bring back Coachie to run the Utah pick and roll offense. This seems like an indication Petrie expects this team to be a Princeton team.
It means we should be looking at players we are considering through Princeton lenses. I like it, I have always liked that aspect of Kings basketball, and I really like that we seem to have some identifiable direction. Now starts the quest to find guys that can play in the Princeton offense, that also play some defense.
The more you guys work the trade machine, the happier I am GP is our GM.
Exactly the point I've been making
and it applies not only to the players but to the coach as well. That limits the list of candidates for the Kings next coach too. Pretty much the only currently available coach with those qualifications is Eddie Jordan, right? It’s kind of an odd play for the Kings. On the one hand it makes sense since GP builds teams based on the Princeton offense, but on the other hand it seems extreme to limit your coaching candidates to guys who run the Princeton offense (i.e. it’s not that common).
Master of all types of basketball, Yoda is
Coachie may be the father grandfather of the Princeton offense, but his knowledge goes beyond just the Princeton, and therefore, his presence is no guarantee that the Princeton is in our future. In fact, based on his assessment of our core players, he may very well determine that we’re not built to run the Princeton and suggest an alternate offensive scheme.
I think everyone is reading too much into his hiring. He’s 80 yrs old, and even if he were an exercise freak like Jack Lalanne which he isn’t, his time working with the rookies will be extremely limited and his access to Natt will be limited to home streches. I see him as a watcher, who occationally makes suggestions, and not as Natt’s teacher and primary offensive coordinator.
"If you don't have anything good to say, LIE" - Mom
Same thing I was saying above
I think this is more about teaching players how to play than anything else. Kevin Martin LOVES the guy, and not because he taught K-Mart how to play the Princeton. It’s because he helped K-Mart with how to play, period.
Shut up and Coach
And helped him stay motivated his first 2 seasons here too
