Donté Greene Headed to Reno

More news!

Greene, the 20-year-old rookie small forward out of Syracuse acquired by the Kings in the summer trade with Houston for Ron Artest, hasn't seen the floor in seven of the last eight games and is itching to feel like a basketball player again. [...]

Greene - according to sources close to the team - will depart for the Kings' NBA Developmental League team in Reno on Saturday. Greene's departure may only be for a few games or perhaps longer, but his mere presence on the Bighorns' roster is historical because he is the first Kings player sent to its D-League team.

Minutes listening to Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Pete Carril will be the most important of Greene's year, but getting a little burn -- and confidence -- at the D-League level never hurt a soul. Quincy Douby should have gotten the opportunity two years ago, but there's no sense in fighting old battles. Good luck in Réno, D.G.

I consider this to be half-good news. It’s great he’ll get to play, stretch his legs, get in a scandal involving strippers…you know, the usual. But at the same time, I’d prefer Greene to be getting his burn in the big show (no disrespect to the Bighorns).

Sure, he'll get good experience in Reno

But waiting until he’s 30 would make more sense. I mean, if there was no benefit to him playing there the past two months, I’m sure there’s no point to it now.

We might as well send Douby....

….or is he considered too old to be in the D League. I dont know the rules about the D League.

by SolidWarSnake on Jan 8, 2009 7:18 PM PST reply actions

Too experienced

You can only send 1st and 2nd-year players while retaining rights.

by Tom Ziller on Jan 8, 2009 7:31 PM PST up reply actions

Well than waive the rights.....

Haha, I know, they won’t do that.

Wondering

Is this going to damper his confidence? I really hope he’s excited about playing there, but it does seem like a bit of a demotion

I guess it is better than sitting on the bench

by melee on Jan 8, 2009 7:53 PM PST reply actions

He needs to play - a lot

Competing nightly against almost NBA talent and hopefully dominating them should be good for him

There goes 80% of the team's personality

The Kings are 8-28. Just freaking play the guy here. What’s the worst that could happen?

'truth' about the personality part

I think he needs some real minutes to practice what he’s hopefully learned at the NBA level. Reno will let him do that.

Another observation

Could be that there’s a trade coming that will bring back more players than it sends out. Greene may be getting stashed to make room for the new players.

I think they still count on the roster (?)

Don't know

That was purely a guess – I’m not sure what the rules are. I would assume that a D-League player doesn’t use a roster spot, but I don’t know that for a fact.

I don't think they count.

However this move could also mean that there is no plans on moving Salmons any time soon. Unless we net another SF in return.

Donté Grééné

is still taking up a roster spot whether he plays for Reno or the Big Daddy Kings.

But, naturally

Donté will be on the inactive list rather than the active list sitting on the bench.

Pretty sure they continue to take a roster spot
If an active player is assigned, he is automatically placed on the team’s Inactive List.

The inactive list is part of the roster.

What I hope is..

Donte embraces this and works his tail off in Reno. Especially on defense, because that is the only thing keeping him on the bench at the NBA level. His offense is far ahead of his defense, and until he improves on that end, he cant help the club here. Lets hope he accepts this assignment with a professional attitude, and takes the opportunity to improve his game and gets good experience. This team isn’t going anywhere, and he should taste some winning at the pro level some where….

I hope he works on his ball handling as well there

And finding a way to exploit matchup’s down low.

He said early in the year

He’d be glad to go to Reno to work on his game, his defense

Maybe

But if defense gets you sent to the D-League, Brad Miller would be getting posterized at McClatchy High School right now.

And Kenny Thomas would be in the starting lineup every night

At least, since Coach feels he’s the best defensive post player on the roster.

The “rules” seem to be applied a bit haphazardly on this roster.
